Can anyone give me any reasonable explanation for him wanting to join United in January? Not including money.

The same reason Falcao wanted to go to the French league and play no European football in a World Cup year... Playing for a team at the time which was making positive progression (Atletico Madrid). But other than that reason no i don't know why he would want to leave, but if the club accepts a bid them we pretty much have him.

Aside from money? The fact that we are a far bigger club, I suppose.

Right now however, does he really need to move? Not like he will be short of options in the summer, after giving it a shot of creating history with his boyhood club.

There's a whole lot of funny in what he said. And to deliver it with such arrogance...

If you're a top player, you're being chased by every top team who can afford your services, if you're not, you need the big club more than they need you. That is, and always will be, how it goes.

And, I don't care what team it is, pride in playing for them is going to be highly subjective and personal when you've got the pick of any that you fancy and many have turned us down in the past because they obviously didn't see us as this all-encompassing behemoth some of you seem to think we are just because we're Manchester United.

My views haven't got anything to do with our current standing or supposed fall from grace, either; I've always thought of it as arrogance when any supporter of a big club adopts such an attitude.
It has nothing to do with arrogance. It's a fact. We are one of the biggest clubs in the world.

All clubs can be snubbed by a few players, in special cases, even Real Madrid and Barcelona.. That's doesn't mean they're not two of the biggest clubs in the world, and that it wouldn't be an honor for any player to play for them.

Nobody said we are the biggest club in the world period. You're now trying to stretch it because your original point is stupid. Regardless what you say, it's still an honor for all players to play for us. It will also be an honor for them to play for Real Madrid, Barcelona, ...etc. Those clubs will always attract good players, because they're the biggest in the world, and we're one of them, and still are.

Notice also that we're talking here about a player playing for Atletico Madrid.. How many players in Atletico Madrid you think would prefer to stay in Atletico Madrid rather than joining United??

There's certainly no reason for him to push for a move. Still, how often do players refuse to leave once their club has accepted a bid for them?

I think getting Athletico to accept a bid would be the bigger obstacle. It would take a massive offer to make them accept, particularly as they'd be guaranteed a big fee in the summer anyway. We'd basically have to make a bid that's far better than any others they're likely to receive, one they really couldn't turn down. I can't see that happening.

There doesn't need to be any other explanation than money. All it takes in money, all else is far less significant.

We could sign Koke and play him as a wide midfielder who comes inside. Like what he does anyway for Atletico. His crossing ability is second to none.

Fully expect this. Moyes is the kind of manager who wants robust central midfielders, not like a football fan who wants a creative central midfielder next to a more defensive minded one. I think he'll go for another ball winner to go next to Fellaini and have a creative midfielder on the left coming inside ala Pienar and using the overlaps from Baines or whoever we sign for left back. I think our setup will actually be a lot like Atletico's and Koke's role in the team almost exactly the same if we sign him.

Love how people still think he is going to leave Atletico, his boyhood club, still in the Champions League, still in the race for La Liga, during a world cup year, to go to a club who looks like missing out on Champions League football.

The Man Utd name can be very significant in getting you noticed by your national team coach. I know if I were a national team coach, I would be further convinced if one of my players were to move to a club like Man Utd rather than be playing for athletico Madrid, especially as the only significant clubs in Spain are Barcelona and Madrid. The name itself can give a bit more glamour to a player if it somehow makes sense.

I understand what you are saying but in reality, Spain rate their top clubs over those in England. I just see no way he is going to give up European football in a World Cup year. Leave a title race, go to a club who isn't in a title race, could more than likely miss out on Champions League next season, it just makes no sense.

I know we are a big name and will continue to attract top plaers because of it but in this case, it just doesn't make sense.

It has everything to do with arrogance. It's laughable. We have great standing and are one of the best clubs in the world, but for the best players, who have their pick of any club they chose, we're no more 'honourable' than any other unless they have personal leanings towards us.

Oops didn't see that last bit, should have known it was to good to be true.

Del Bosque prefers players who are playing in Spain. The players playing abroad who he chooses are generally ones who got in the NT while they were still in Spain. In any case, Koke plays for Atletico and playing for Atletico isn't like playing for Granada or Celta where they might get lost in the scrap or still be considered an unknown quantity.

Atletico are a better side than United, with a more prosperous future judging by current affairs at both clubs.

With, imo, absolutely no chance of winning La Liga nor do I see them winning Champions League.

If their players will settle for EL and occasional Copa del Rey wins, then fair enough.

If they keep their top players and keep them fit they have a chance of La Liga.

How are we pronouncing Koke? If it's how I think then I've got a hell of a pun about him going well with that lemon we acquired in the summer...

Pretty sure it's Ko-Kay

Ta. Can't imagine he'd leave in Jan but even if we get it tied up for the summer it would be excellent news. At least he'd get a full pre-season unlike Fellaini.

No way. You guys are one of the best known clubs in the world, with one of the largest fanbase and with one of the largest revenue in the football world. Your foundation is much better. Atletico Madrid have some temporary success, but sooner or later clubs will most likely buy away their stars and their coach and sooner or later they will fail replace them adequately. This happens all the time. Clubs like Atletico have a purple patch every now and then, but usually they cannot keep it up. And clubs like ManUtd or Bayern have a bad patch every now and then, but usually the get back to the top quickly.

Level on points with Barcelona at the top. Only 2 goals less in goal difference.

Yep. No chance whatsoever.

Who do you support? You seem to have a higher opinion of this club than a a lot of our supporters

I suddenly feel we can win the CL this season

I support Juventus. And yeah, when we have a bad patch our forums look exactly the same. It's quite amusing. Everything is bad, everyone has to be sold or fired, and we need to spend four gazzilion euros not to get relegated ;)

Can someone please spam this post all over the United forum?

Even though it's just common sense, this post pleases me. Nice pep talk!

This feels so flattering, given the current state of our club.

You are a wonderful human being.

It's been on twitter all day. Started at Goal.com I think. Other 'ITK' sources are saying it's a done deal for £32 mill.

Just out of curiosity, who are some of these 'ITK' sources on twitter?

The only one I follow is Freddieboswell7, and he has been reliable in the past.

Your cup is filled with many assumptions. Some of their star players may possibly be prized away but it would take huge money for the likes of Diego Costa, Turan and Koke (highly unlikely) to depart. They also have a good core of players loyal to the club, plus emerging talents such as Oliver Torres. If you think Simeone will be prized away simply for money then you don't have a clue about him or the club. He is a legend at the Calderon and a man who has sacrificed his home life in the pursuit of success with the club. This is more than a purple patch with Atletico, he is building something really sustainable there. With Real and Barcelona agreeing to lower their share of the Spanish domestic TV rights it is right to expect clubs like Atletico will begin to see a big surge in their domestic income, which is not exactly paltry as things stand.

I expect to see them established as credible players in the Spanish and European scene during the next 2 seasons.
