Not up to much apart from trying to return fancy flick one twos.

He looked like he couldn't be arsed.

This was the thing that stood out to me, he didn't seem at all interested in pressing, or doing much off the ball.

Notably he didn't bother following Ndidi which left him in acres of space for the Leicester goal.

He is a slow. You have to accommodate his lack of pace with another midfielder but that isn't the system

Me too, he doesn’t have the physical attributes for it.

Well he was so good in the PL last season he went and played in the Euros for England and he was good there too.
Sometimes young players have dips in form and are inconsistent. It happens

Looks like he’s running through treacle this season. He was never the quickest but even Casemiro would give us more legs at the moment. Seems to have lost that little turn of pace that would get him out of tight spots that he showed last season.

They do, but his lack of pace is going to be a big issue for him. We’ve seen plenty of youngsters have a great first season and not be able to replicate it. This was called out last season as well but we were all riding the Mainoo train.

If he's to play as a 10, we need Amad and Dorgu as WBs to widen the pitch and overload the final third.

Mebbe we should be thinking about cashing in on him. He’s been absolute shite. No surprise we were a different side when he was brought off. I know the footballing geniuses crempt in their drawers when they saw him do a decent job against a joke of a Rumanian side, but the PL is reality.

He’s fecking 19. People writing him off are mental. Just mental.
The concern around him isn't technical, it's mostly physical. He came back looking much more solid and had clearly bulked up this season and now, he looks and moves like Hulk Hogan.

Like Hojlund there is nothing Mainoo can do tonight.

The back 5 and the two CM's simply didn't get the ball into the opposition half and penalty area enough.

Anyone at the top end of the pitch was starved of the ball. Anything that was vaguely put their way was of poor quality.

needs to watch Carrick videos and develop positional understanding to compensate that speed because right now he's a bit of a liability out of possession.

Can't press, slow and can't jog around for more than 60 minutes. He needs a good kick in the arse. Needs to get some power and conditioning done this summer. He can't play deep, can't play as a box to box and can't play as a 10 in the PL. I worry for him.

Ugh his lack anything to his game apart from tight space dribbles is starting to depress me.

Offers pretty much nothing as a passer, offers nothing athletically or as a runner, and seems so fecking passive in how he approaches the game right now. Watching him receive passes between the lines just to lazily knock it back did my head in.

And I worry about where this huge improvement might come from. He’s obviously very young but rarely do midfielders suddenly transform their passing game and he’s old enough now to where you can’t reasonably expect some huge growth spurt to up his athleticism

Again, a short term off the cuff reaction. Bodies develop at wildly different rates at that age. There’s no reason to draw any conclusions at this nascent stage of his career.

Plenty of really good players who were not quick

Yes, but they offset that with being proficient in other areas, ie, Juan Mata is highly technical, has vision for a forward pass and can make a variety of through ball passes.

And this will be the challenge for him. In the absence of elite level athleticism his time will be spent further forward as to not have to deal with defensive transitions and expose him, but with that comes creative responsibilities. He doesn't have to show the consistency of it just yet, but he does have to show the capacity for creativity in his passing and progressive play, and right now, it's not in his game.
