What I want to see from him is more focus. He lapped up the hype after scoring a couple of goals and the goal in the Cup Final. But hey, remember Jesse Lingaard?

Mainoo should be aiming to be an energetic, young, fast, aggressive, midfield powerhouse.

But instead, what is he? A baller? Tackler? Passer? Goal-Scorer? A leader?

I have no idea. And that is exactly what he should be doing at his age, defining his game. He is young, but he needs to focus, because he is hardly a "generational" talent. Just get your head down, and work, work, work hard at your game.
Collyer has been better.

Man Utd 2:1 Leicester New
Utterly dreadful. Not sure what position he can play in, but he looks way off the pace and nowhere near good enough to start games.

For me he is better at winning the ball than passing with the ball.

I'd rotate him/cover Ugarte as the replacement to Casemiro in the squad, not the replacement to Bruno or Eriksen.

I don’t see how he’ll cope playing in the PL, he just doesn’t have the pace, athleticism or stamina for it. Italy might be better suited for him.

He’s definitely not a #10.
He’s midfield cover at this point, which at his age shouldn’t be an issue.

He doesn't even look like a footballer anymore, looks like a competition winner out there.

More silly flicks
More daft back passing

Rinse and repeat.

Too slow and weak to play as anything other than the 3rd midfielder in a midfield 3.

Crowd were really getting frustrated with him. His tendency is to recycle the ball rather than look forward and he just wasn't in the game.

Have said it before but just don't think he's a good fit for premier league football. Italy or Spain or the slower pace of international football seem a better fit. Just invisible a lot of the time. Sure, he's good technically, but starting to look like something of a luxury.

He’s lost that confidence he had now barely resembles a footballer at times.

I'm sensing this with him as well. One of the players who isn't at all suited to this system, doesn't have the physicality to play in that midfield two or the speed and creativity to play as a #10.

The whole 10 idea came about because of his slick touch and it did look against 3rd FSCB, but this isn't the 80's, a 10 needs a level of physical intensity he just doesn't have. When Zirkzee has more energy and intensity to his game that shows a lot.

He is a midfielder, ideally for his skillset in a 3, but he needs to have a strong Summer working on his conditioning.

He’s fecking 19. People writing him off are mental. Just mental. He’ll be a top player. He’s already played at a really high level. He’s having a tough patch, get behind him, don’t berate him. It’s all good for his learning though. Has to learn to shrug off the abuse from idiots if he’s going to make it here, it’s all part and parcel of being a United player. Build them up, strip them down.

He’s a CM and needs time to develop. He should be third choice behind Ugarte and Bruno for now. I’d like to see Dorgu, Ugarte, Bruno and Amad as the midfield 4, with Garnacho, Zirkzee and Hojlund in front. Mainoo will get loads of minutes as a sub and in rotation. Trying to shoehorn him in as a 10 or a false 9 is just daft and it’s killing his confidence.

The key is in the wingbacks. Amad out right has him much more involved in the game and able to carry the ball at pace forwards, which creates so much more space for others. The long diagonal from Bruno to Garnacho is a real weapon.

He was really bad, I’m not sure what his best position is really. Young players do have ups and downs so have to put that into perspective as well.

El Khannous looked levels above him though, bit it is early days for Mainoo in this role.

He needs to improve his mobility otherwise we should cash in.

He’s never going to be able to play 10 in this system, he can’t run inbehind and we aren’t able to stretch teams with him.

He has to play as part of the midfield two, but he just gets run over the top of.

Agree

Still looks very slow.

Zirkzee has come on a few times now and looks to be really pushing himself, would probably favour him for a 10 spot.

I’d be moving him out before considering a wage he doesn’t deserve .

Looked like he was trying to do his best Rashford impression tonight...awful stuck in the mud running.

A night to forget.

Needs to be played deeper in midfield and improve his passing. Obviously young but is being moved around way too much

He's got no confidence at the moment, he was very negative in his use of the ball tonight and that doesn't really work when he is playing in a more advanced position.

He’s 19. He needs time. He was a revelation last season. Started the Euro final. He’s a top player, but he needs time. He’s having a tough season, which is so common with breakthrough players in their second year. A talent like his has to be nurtured and developed, not flogged and torn apart. We sell him, and he’ll go somewhere else and be brilliant, we’ll regret it enormously.

We need patience. He shouldn’t be starting right now. Ugarte and Bruno is our best midfield 2. Getting minutes as a sub and in rotation is perfect for him at the moment. He’s easily equipped to play the role. He just needs to develop the physical and defensive side of his game, which will take some time. Time we should absolutely afford him, because he’s a top class player in the making. I hate the way we turn on our young players so fast these days.

Someone like Scholes wasn’t even regularly starting games for United until he was 22. This club is huge, pressures are enormous and midfield is the toughest position to play. At Kobbie’s age Modric was on loan at Zrinjski Mostar from Dinamo Zagreb. He moved to Spurs 4 years later, and on to Real at 27. Not saying Kobbie is as good as either - have to point that out for the inevitable reactions otherwise - but it’s so relevant to point out the career trajectory of top midfielders. Might it just be the case that people are expecting far too much of Mainoo, far too early, mainly because he was so revelatory last season at just 18. A victim of his own precocious brilliance.

We badly need to give this lad a break and our support. He’ll potentially be a massive player for us if we let him, but he’ll fade away to nothing if we let the dogs at him, as we currently are. I’ve seen comments about “cashing in”, “getting rid”, someone even said his legs “were gone”. Some biblically stupid comments. We need at least another 2 seasons, after this one, of steady progress, before we even think about judging his level. Last year he was one of the best CMs in the league, people were anointing him as a sure thing, the new messiah, now after a bit of a rough patch, “he’ll never be good enough”, he’s shit and a waste of space. It’s truly depressing to read the sheer volume of fecking stupidity in this forum.

Edit: this isn’t aimed at you personally, just a general rant.

Mainoo is 19 and in his second full season as a pro. You expect inconsistency from most teenagers. He's also already had two injuries that has lost him 5 ish months of playtime.

People are far too quick to judge. Garnacho has been one of our most decisive players over the last half dozen fixtures, but before then many wanted him sold. Patience has worn thin and the players that most deserve time are given none.

I feel like wherever you put him, he will have at least one major deficiency that would be considered crucial for that role. For now I don't actually mind him playing further up the pitch.
