Nonsense - he dribbles into trouble constantly. He lacks the IQ to play there.
Encourage you to watch him closer to the box when he plays next time. He generally does much better. Very clearly being misprofiled.

He'll end up at another club like Chelsea and we'll wonder how we fluffed the lines.

It obviously would make a difference. He's a great dribbler and superb at give an goes. He's also got a good little shot on him.
Compare his running/dribbling to Cunha for an example of what a top level AM needs to look like in those positions. Kobbie is a billion miles off.

Another match where he didnt win the ball. Without that side of the game from his first run this season... He's not bringing enough to the team and he messed up a few passes to set us on counter attacks in the first half. 69% pass accuracy, along with several other senior players, not reliable enough with his distribution

He is very young and had a good debut season. He is really struggling right now, along with the rest of the team. Needs to be taken out of the firing line so that his confidence doesn't get shot for good and we no longer see the Mainoo we loved from last season. Should be Casemiro and Ugarte in midfield for the next few weeks.

You must be watching someone else! He does nothing close to the box except give the ball away. He deserves to be dropped.

He’s far too unathletic for the side we’ve got. If his passing range was better he’d maybe get away with it, but it’s not at all.

It’s not going well for him at the moment with the injuries and new system. He’ll improve though.

The people so scathing and quick to write him off now, are inevitably the same that hyped him to the heavens last season. Kid is 19 and needs time. Needs to be rotated. New coach, new system, no rest in the summer, injuries, it all takes its toll. He’s an absolute baller this kid but he’s not a robot. Young players need to be carefully developed, and fans are generally knee jerk, mouthing foaming fools.

Mainoo, if handled correctly, is a future lynchpin of this team, but he’s still a damn kid, playing in probably the hardest position on the pitch. He’s already shown he can perform at the highest level, against the best. But inconsistency and dips in form are the hallmark of virtually every young player. He’s a diamond that needs to be protected and polished.

Someone needs to spend a long time in the training ground with him working on his passing. Unfortunately it's not really up to the level you need.

It's fixable though, passing should be easy for someone of his dribbling ability because he can open so many more angles than other players. And adding range/length to your passing is one of the easiest areas to improve in.

He's been rubbish for ages and deserves criticism as much as anyone else.

Not surprised like, I mean every promising young player turns to shit at this club

As someone said in the match day thread, good close ball control and poor passing today.

I hope we see him ahead of the likely midfield partnership of Casemiro and Eriksen next week. Just give me something to look forward to before the game. It probably won't end well as I see high octane Newcastle running and pressing through us but yeh.

His passing was terrible and just seems to hang onto the ball a bit too much at times like most of our players.

I am not sure what kind of midfielder is Mainoo, he doesn't break up play, he doesn't create, he doesn't have good passing range, he doesn't have a good shot. What does he bring to the table? I don't think he is the answer. Ugarte is already playing much much better just 3 months with this squad. Mainoo like Hoijund are just bench player for now.

England came way too soon. Due to injury and internationals he hasn't had a full pre season as a senior footballer. Given his current physical limitations it could do wonders for him.

A midfield 3 with runners around him and a compact shape is where he can excel. Doesn't have the passing range of physical capabilities to cover ground to be a highly impactful in this set up.

The AM/10 thing is one of those forum trends that has gained some traction but he lacks the creativity and running power to make it work.

File it alongside the Lukaku needs to play RW because he put a couple of decent crosses in idea.

We didn’t play a 3 under Eth last year and he did alright.

Also it’s weird now everyone is saying he’s a 10 - again, he never played as a 10 last season either.

What’s more likely is he’s still getting back into form after his injury.

I think when the game is compact he looks good. In the Euros he was in a three often with 2 workhorses around him in Rice and Bellingham. For United whilst he looked good when we got the ball to him, he also was routinely getting run past or struggling to get back. Its why I think he will be at his best in a 3. However, what really concerns me is his lack of a good passing range. Which means to progress through midfield with him he either needs to dribble which is tough when there is no space or he needs a well oiled midfield 3. I think (and I'm not saying he is this level of quality) that he is similar to Iniesta in that he could work in the midfield, kind of floating and getting into positions where he can dribble. However that requires a midfield 3 and for there to be no Bruno taking up those spaces. In this formation, he just doesn't really fit the midfield.

Completely agree with all of this.

The more I see him play, the more rough he looks. It seems to be that the more he plays, the more flaws appear in his game. His passing is quite bad at times. Another area that I don't see mentioned too often is his stamina. He seems to drop off wildly around the hour mark, if not sooner. I'm really struggle to come to terms with any midfielder at our club being unable to pass the ball...He really needs to work on learning that crucial element of his game. He needs to learn his position. He needs benching as he doesn't look ready. In a better squad, I'm not sure a bench position would even be a guarantee. Nor should it. He's in very poor form.

To be fair I really don't think the system suits him, he should be an 8 in a 433

Yep. In a functioning 3 man midfield I think he can look good, but the 2 man midfield highlights his weaknesses even more.

Probably controversial but if we could sell Mainoo for big money I would. His lack of athleticism will be an issue his whole career.

You can’t improve athleticism so we might have a problem here.

Plays like a 5 a side player abit like Jadon. However he’s young so many he just had to grow into that position however he cannot be a starter next season.

Same point I’ve been making. He simply has to improve his range and progressiveness at a minimum. That would mitigate his lack of mobility by a huge margin. Right now he’s just a neat dribbler that gets caught out too often and won’t actually hurt you going forward which isn’t good enough.

A couple of times in the first half he had an easy pass while we were attacking and he overhit it badly.
Last season he was just so tidy on the ball and now he borders on sloppy and he is too good to be doing that.

Of course you can improve athleticism, especially in younger players. VO2 Max can be increased with focused training.

The more pressing problem is that he seems to have forgotten how to pass a ball to a teammate 10 meters away. Both him and Bruno have been incredibly wasteful in possession.

Second season syndrome is a thing but his fall has been so steep. I actually can’t recognise the player I saw last season at all. This is a Januzaj level drop so far, we just have to hope he recovers and keeps developing.

A lot of people talk about passing being his weakness but it was never this bad last year. For me his biggest problem was always getting into games as he didn’t always put himself into n the best position to receive the ball but whenever he did his progressive passing was alright. He didn’t have the greatest passing range but it was decent enough.

What we’re seeing this season is an abomination. A poster mentioned Ndombele and that’s exactly what he looks like the Spurs version.

His lack of speed was always my biggest issue and he seems even heavier and slower now which is crazy for someone so young. I still have belief in him but he’s turned from someone that was viewed as a sure thing to a coin toss now.

People blaming this on where he’s playing are missing it. He’s not doing anything well at the moment, his performance would be just as bad out wide with his current loose dribbling.

Seems to have quick feet and I thought a decent short range passer but never really understood his game beyond that.

Does anyone remember the last time he's won a header? I can't remember the last time he's jumped.

He reminds me of Joao Felix, good touch, quick feet, but otherwise seems to have next to no impact on games. Like Felix, he also lacks athleticism and plays with zero intensity. I was hopeful of him last season, but I just do not see him turning into a top player and feel the club should seriously consider cashing in while his value is high.

EPL midfield has to be strong and physical. Onana would do alot more than Mainoo. If there is a big money offer for Mainoo to other league, we should take the money. Reinvest the money to a more EPL proven midfielder.

Agree with all of this. What I don’t understand is why we have allowed him to put on so much more muscle. He’s visibly heavier than last season and it’s making him even slower than before - to the point where he struggles to move around. Put him on a hardcore fitness regime and it will do wonders.

Just a bit of second season syndrome hopefully. No need to run him out of town just yet.

What a stinker he had. I lost countof how many times he lost possession witch bad passes. Out of character.
As well as being a bit slow his confidence looks shot.

Aside from his general drop off with the ball, I can’t get past his inability to move with any purpose or speed. At his age, you’d think enthusiasm and vigour would be a given.

Unless you’re incredibly gifted with ball, you’re going to struggle in modern day football if you can’t run without looking like you’re wearing diving boots.

He only had 3 weeks rest from the Euro final to play again for us I think. Way too little and should be sent on holiday for a few weeks.

Completely agree. And to everyone hoping that this improves with age…

To the eye at least, he has gone backwards in this regard since last season. Nothing to do with rest. He looks physically different, a bit taller and broader. And seemingly with that has come a further negative impact on his mobility.
