He'll be fine long term. Got the weight on his shoulders at 18/19. Seems to play a lot better coming off the bench right now. Probably cause it's less pressure + he's still not fully developed. Not too sure where he fits in in our formation right now.

A big reason why we've managed to somehow put up a fight in the second half after an absolute demolition in the first one. Even if he's physically not ready I'm struggling to understand to decision to start with the pair of Eriksen and Casemiro in midfield — and yeah, that's still true even though Mainoo was pretty poor in previous games.

Credit to the lad. He’s faced heavy criticism this season for not reaching the heights of last year—a natural dip, but one that fans often overlook. It’s easy to forget he’s still young, the team as a whole hasn’t been performing well, and he’s had to deal with a couple of injuries along the way.

Tonight, however, showed his character and mentality. To come on in such a tense and hostile environment, with the team 0-2 down, and play the way he did was impressive. Was he flawless? No. But he was brave—he didn’t shy away from the challenge, and he actively tried to make things happen. That’s the mark of a good player. Fair play to him.

Played well today. As said before, I really like the look of him and Ugarte next to each other. And I don't mind Bruno rotating with Mainoo as a deeper CM. The midfield is a disaster if anybody else plays though

Fantastic - ran the show for us in the second half; a rare beacon of hope.

I like him popping up further forwards, that's where he can make things happen in my mind but this season we need him in the CMs I guess.

Game was already lost so we don't really know what impact he would have had. But good for his confidence. Easy to be better than eriksen and casemiro but also had some nice moments

The dude is 19, we rely on him to carry our midfield that is the level of fecked we are.

It's the same situation with Amad. Had a couple good games and then everyone looks at him to carry the team week in week out, when in reality neither are up to that yet.

Yep. The last window really needed to see us get players to compliment him and also help him grow but of course that didn't happen cos that would be insane

Still think he should play the other 10 next to Diallo to compensate for his lack of legs in the CM position, probably the only bright spot for us last night.

The only reason he shouldn’t play or get picked is to manage his game time being the age he is.

I am really worried about him. He is a very exciting talent. Composed at a very young age. He stabalised the midfield once subbed on. But my worry is that his development will be impacted in such a dysfunctional team.

He looked a lot better against Newcastle. Not to the levels of last season but an improvement on recent weeks.

I notice he's choosing the very safe pass more often than not now, which can be a bit frustrating when going forward. There were a couple of times Mazrouri had made great runs ahead of him in the right channel and was in heaps of space, and Mainoo could have easily chosen to play the through ball to him but instead stopped and passed sideways or backwards. Where as last season he would have played that ball forward.

Hopefully it's just a confidence/age thing and with time he can find last season's form again.

That's the best I have seen him play. Was pulling the strings out there. Further up and on the front foot is his game. Love to see it.

I nearly let my emotions and frustrations get the better of me and forgot the quality of this lad. He's 19 and learning his trade in one of the worst utd teams ever.

Yep, was this the first time Amorim started that pairing? It’s literally suicidal to go into a game with those 2 as your starting CM pairing.

I was worried that ETH burnt out this kid last season but he is continuing to show not just his talent but charachter by coming on as sub and not sulking like a spoiled young player who thought he has made it. I hope to see more from him.

He was the one ray of light in our last game, and it was very heartening to see him play with such purpose.

Even though he seems very level headed I was a bit worried that we'd done our usual trick of over-hyping a young player to the point where they lose their way. Him getting involved with stuff like the GQ thing as well doesn't help, I wish we had more control as a club over stuff like that happening with our younger players. We need to keep them grounded.

Considering his age, his role hasn't been defined yet...but personally long term I would just like him to play in CM. I feel he just needs to learn the position more and gain more experience.

The talk of moving him to no.10 seems like a solution to hide his current flaws rather than a well thought out plan for his career.

IMO of course.

I really have faith in him and hope we basically build around him, but, I can't see him as part of a midfield two unless he improves his physicality. That certainly should come with age, but at present any midfield with him +1 - even Ugarte - lacks bite imo, and that's really crucial in the prem. Gone are the days, imo, of a player like Scholes or Modric being able to succeed in a two. A three sure, but Amorim clearly isn't going to do that.

But the sky's the limit for him. He has all the raw tools and ability to become a genuinely top-level player for us, probably the biggest point of optimism at the moment.

Hes an absolutely fantastic talent. Some of the comments a few pages pack are taking the piss. A young player struggling for few games and all of a sudden we need to get rid. Honestly.

Never mind. Some of the people at the Caf have the patience of a mayfly.

He's one of the best dribbler in the league. He practically does not lose the ball.

Some people in the fan base could really do with fecking off and supporting city.

I am not sure what kind of midfielder is Mainoo, he doesn't break up play, he doesn't create, he doesn't have good passing range, he doesn't have a good shot. What does he bring to the table? I don't think he is the answer. Ugarte is already playing much much better just 3 months with this squad. Mainoo like Hoijund are just bench player for now.

Completely agree with all of this.

The more I see him play, the more rough he looks. It seems to be that the more he plays, the more flaws appear in his game. His passing is quite bad at times. Another area that I don't see mentioned too often is his stamina. He seems to drop off wildly around the hour mark, if not sooner. I'm really struggle to come to terms with any midfielder at our club being unable to pass the ball...He really needs to work on learning that crucial element of his game. He needs to learn his position. He needs benching as he doesn't look ready. In a better squad, I'm not sure a bench position would even be a guarantee. Nor should it. He's in very poor form.

Are we allowed ask if he's good enough?

Hold off that new contract

Must be a joy for any midfielder coming up against him. Technically he's good but beyond that he's a liability.

EPL midfield has to be strong and physical. Onana would do alot more than Mainoo. If there is a big money offer for Mainoo to other league, we should take the money. Reinvest the money to a more EPL proven midfielder.
Madness

I hope we start seeing more of a mainoo-ugarte midfield. Ugarte has had a relatively good start to life at united (from an individual perspective). He seems like someone who can take on the defensive role within the midfield duo (what casemiro was supposed to do) and mainoo can be the more advanced of the pair. Mainoo has good composure on the ball (fascinating given his age really) and has shown that he can have good positioning and runs forward (showed it more last year but i think his overall game has that). It was obvious that he had a great impact on the game against newcastle and should be a starter when fit.

At his age, he has all the potential to be a very important player for us. The overall form and status of the team will obviously impact his development, so i hope we go in the right direction there

Form is inproving, we will need that! Didnt deserve to be taken off but fresh legs were needed.
