No doubting Suarez was the key man for us in 2013/14. He's one of the best strikers in the world, so that's hardly surprising. However, a key feature of our good form that season was just how well our pressing game worked. Not having the distraction of European football obviously helped tremendously on that score, & it's a challenge that Klopp will have to overcome if he wants to implement that style of play week in, week out.
It's not entirely true to say that Suarez totally carried Liverpool, & Rodgers, that year. The manager deserves a lot of credit for getting the best out of the man, & in turn, the best out of the team. Let's not forget he played a season & a half under Dalglish, yet his goals/assists per game is vastly superior under Rodgers than it was whilst playing for Kenny. Not forgetting also that in the 10 games he missed after the biting affair we won 6, drew 3, & lost just the once.
In the 3 plus years he was in charge, Rodgers lost - through no fault of his own - 4 top players in Gerrard, Suarez, Carragher, & Sterling. That would be a hammer-blow for even one of the top sides. For a side that's lost it's 'top club' status, & that doesn't have the pull it once did for major players, it's pretty much mission impossible. One of the hopes in recruiting Jurgen Klopp is that maybe his standing might help us attract, & keep, the better players. Sadly that's something that Brendan Rodgers was unable to do.
