Upamencano is a very good CB. But if tuchel thinks his buildup play isnt good enough then fair enough. He has de ligt whos build up play is very good.

Id have Upamencano at Utd, but this trend of it being more important for defenders not having to defend but play out and keeper not having to make saves but play out is just stupid.

Defences, especially stubborn stingy ones win you championships.

Pretty much every good team, the centre backs are the players with the most touches and passes per game, hence why they need to be good in possession. No matter how stupid you may find it, if a teams wants to win something, you need a goalkeeper and centre backs that are good on the ball.

I suppose us signing such a highly rated CB was always going to be difficult with the more successful clubs around.

Not sure how people can argue otherwise if they look at our performances with Licha and without Licha (of course Shaw can fill in, and do a lot of the same things, but then that weakens the left side substantially and creates other holes) . You need a functioning, technically good defensive unit, and at the heart of that CB needs to take ball under pressure and knit ball with midfield or find wide defenders making runs as well as mix it up with longer-balls, positioning is also key obviously but a lot of that is just being available for passes in the first place, or blocking final balls as well as passer and CFs view of goal. You need a certain obduracy and bravery to go all the way in winning things but those can't substitute for GK and CBs being good in developing play, and are, if anything, less important in a top team performing 'on par'.

There are many different ways to play football and win. Ball playing centrebacks and goalies is a modern trend about keeping possession with some managers, i blame guardiola for this trend.

Im more old school personally and think a defence including keeper should be primarily fovused on keeping the ball out of your own net.

Look at the approaches the most successful teams have implemented.

Your talking recent success. There have been plenty of successful teams whos approach hasnt been about retaining possession, i.e. counter attacking, playing direct, playing it long, forcing transitions with intense pressing.

me: mom can we buy Kim Min-jae?

mom: no, we have Kim Min-jae at home

at home: Maguire :drool::drool:

I wouldn't be to worried about anything in the transfer window, we will always be a meme boys. just have a laugh every year and enjoy

TBH if he does go to Bayern we should just get Pavard who IMO is a better player, especially considering he’s class at RB too

If Varane and Martinez can stay healthy, this is not that great a priority because we need more urgently a ST, GK and CDM (in case we lose Case, and was he irreplaceable) in that order. But I have serious concerns over Varane's ability to play a whole season uninjured and of course we don't know how well Martinez will recover from his.

I wonder if he's thinking he might not be immediate first choice at OT, given we have Varane and Martinez... and I also wonder if we're interested because Licha's injury is worse than they are letting on

i for one shall boo him extra loud if ends up at Bayern and they visit us in the CL

That’s true but it’s also why the CBs need to be technically good. They get pressed so much these days, they need to be calm and accurate with their passing and they need to show for the ball and receive it in tight space. They don’t need to pass like Glen Hoddle but cloggers are in the past.

And of course trends change over the years, what was in vogue 10 years is seen as archaic today and in 10 years time the current vogue will be something else and todays game seen as archaic, one thing that won't change is the CAF always arguing and knowing better!

Very disappointing to hear this be honest, but I do wonder if the club were really that interested to begin with.

As others have said, Timber probably seems the more likely. Is he as good though?

10M per year. So about 200k/wk. So about similar to Maguire and Antony. i don’t know about income tax in Germany.
It’s reported to be close to €10m net, not gross. Though I would not believe it since that would make him one of the top earners, which is rather unlikely.

Feck him. If he’d rather play in an inferior league for a team that walks it every year then he’s welcome to it.

You guys moving fast. I think he’ll be a really success at your club, man. Congrats (if the transfer happen).

I'm still waiting to find out how people in here think the club can force Maguire to leave that actually makes sense.

Extremely disappointed. One of the very best on the planet in his position available for an extremely reasonable price. These are the kind of signings we have to kill to make because they are such huge cost savers in the long run. Sigh. Really disappointed. But Disasi is pretty good too so hopefully we can get him.

The email probably got stuck in Joel's spam folder. Still awaiting his reply and green light to move for the player.

You cannot force anyone out, but by that logic I'm not sure how top clubs ever manage to sell any of their players? But somehow they do.

Tell him he's not going to be captain, shirt number will change and he's not in the first team plans. Very few fit and healthy players insist on sitting on the bench when they could just leave to a club where they will play.

That's because football, like all things, evolves.

There wasn’t a lot of concrete anyway. Going to Bayern is boring though

Kim will have wanted guarantees he would be in front of Varane. I think we should move for Šutalo 20m should get him.
