What kind of project can Bayern offer?

Dominate their league by poaching the best bundesliga players but completely failing in Europe Like every year.

seems like a great project that.
Using the same terminology, how would you describe United as a sporting project to a prospective signing?

If we cannot convince the players from the top shelf that our club is the place to play, we're never going to rebuild successfully, we'll constantly spin our wheels with shite like Fred, McGuire, Weghorst etc.
Do you expect us to be able to convince any and every player to join us? No club is capable of that.

Because we didn't convince him enough.

That's technically true but we have to accept the idea that no club convince all their targets. Players choose the project that they prefer or choose the club that offer more money.

It makes sense. There's only room for another cb if maguire leaves. He wants to stay and 'fight for his place' which is his right to do so, and so we can't buy Kim.

I wasn't having a go at Maguire I'm just saying it's why I think we have chilled interest in a new cb.

there’s no evidence yet that we are given any budget and that it’s business as usual. We’re being linked to loads but perhaps in a way of “wait for us and when we can we will buy you”. Not convinced much will happen until the club is sold

We should be able to offer both and should be if we want to challenge again. We can't let targets slip through the net like this, it doesn't look good on the club.

We are talking about Bayern Munich, not Hansa Rostock. There has never been any scenario where United should automatically offer a better project and more money.

What is your take?
What other reason is there
It’s just Bayern coming in for him. They’re an attractive club. Guaranteed league title and plenty of Champions League football. No doubt competitive wages too.

We weren’t going to complete this deal until early July anyway given his clause so it always left time for us to be gazumped.

Were.

Players are falling over themselves to go to City (Pep; success; money on and off the books), Chelsea (stupid contracts; London) where we have no bigger draw than Liverpool, Arsenal or now Newcastle, either.

Outside of Woodward era wages, players are easily swayed by other clubs where in the past, we were at least the top tier option alongside Chelsea domestically.

This isn't even factoring foreign giants: Real, Barca (still), Bayern and PSG can, and do, constantly entice talent we'd like without much fuss.

A lot has changed in these ruinous 10 years of not being a dominant force.

We've never failed to attract top players, even without CL football. It's weird that some think we aren't an attractive prospect for footballers.

This club suffers from poor leadership, which led to failure every where else. Remember Evra mentioning that agents were unable to get a hold of a club official sometimes, that's how bad it was, while other top clubs can be quick and decisive. Cas wouldn't be here without the protests last summer.

Players ultimately want to play for top clubs and on big wages. They were happy to play for City even before Pep and even before they started winning anything. If you give them what they want, they'll com. I just don't think we currently have a good team in place that takes care of business properly, and the uncertainty around the ownership isn't helping either.

They've won two trebles in the last 10 years. One was more than a treble if I recall correctly.

We need him about as much as bayern do, this guy should be well down the list as far as priorities s do. Might be better getting Timber as he can cover rb and potentially dmc.

We don’t want to spend 50m on a CB when we have Varane, Martinez, Lindelof and Shaw who can cover CB, have a budget of 120m and need a top CM, Striker and GK?
That's fine but we have to accept we need a centre back when Maguire leaves, whether that centre back is KMJ or not.. It would be beyond dumb to leave ourselves with 3 first team centre backs with one of them (Varane) being injury prone, and having to weaken ourselves at full back because Shaw has to cover CB. We'd have just 7 first team defenders, we're meant to be looking to improve, not go into next season with less depth than we had this season.

If we do end up shipping Maguire at some point in the window, we better have a very shrewd cheap signing lined up, because if we go into the market and end up spending £35+m on his replacement, then it will beg the question why the hell we weren't proactive in getting in KMJ for £43m when we had the chance.

It's possible we were ready to pull the trigger on 1st July but he's just chose Bayern instead. However from everything we've read in the English press, CB was always one of those positions that was up in the air because we're waiting to see how much we spend on the priority positions, waiting to see if Maguire is leaving etc. lack of foresight, clarity, planning has been a staple of United in the transfer market for the last 10 years and I don't expect it to change this summer.

Maguire should have been told he's got no future here a long time ago, that he won't be captain and won't be playing in the first team so he'll need a new club in the summer if he wants first team football. From what we've read in the media I do get the feeling the club don't have a clue whether he's even willing to leave, who's interested in buying and how much we'd get for him, which puts all our plans on hold.

Seriously everyone, would you go to United now with the uncertainty? ETH can convince a player but the future owner needs sorted. Hard to sell a future to any player, ownership needs sorted.

This is more likely true unfortunately.

Also I do believe in the worse case scenario of the sale still not being fully completed by the start of the season, we will have ended up having an insufficient window and a subsequent struggle for top 4.

Which would be a massive shame if we were to regress once again.

It is still Manchester United in the Premier League that you are joining. Doubt players care much about the owners of a football club.

Bayern have Upamecano, De Ligt (spent a fortune on just last summer), Hernandez, Pavard (who can also cover at CB but is in the same boat as Maguire future wise) and have a need at striker, want a new CM.

Not really dampening their appetite for more quality at the position though is it

So which is it? Should we buy KMJ even before selling Maguire? Or buying him only if we manage to sell Maguire?
Or maybe have other options line up (such as Disasi or Todibo as reported this week)?

You’re basically exposing the situation that was reported in the media. United are interested, but will only go for him IF Maguire is sold. If KMJ is not available, then they have other targets identified.

I get that people are unhappy because a target is chosing another club, but criticising United for the sake of it when what they are doing actually is planning and having contingency plans sounds a bit over the top.

By all accounts Hernandez and Pavard want out. Hernandez has been injured for most of his time at Bayern and Pavard is average at best (bar the banger he scores from times to times).
So they really have only 2 reliable CBs in a 3-man defense, it makes perfect sense for them to get a CB

Guarantee you the players do not give a shit who owns the club

Yes. But that profile of CB shouldn’t be a 26 year old who will cost 50m, expects to start every game and is on 9m a year. Harry Maguire started 8 EPL games last year - why are we spending at best 20m more than what we sell him for to replace him when we desperately need what we need elsewhere? If we had an unlimited budget then absolutely - get him in - but we don’t. A right footed CB better than Lindelof to cover/challenge Varane isn’t a higher priority this season than a top striker, Eriksen upgrade, top GK, Casemiro cover or even another striker - a cheaper younger profile makes far more sense to allow us to fill the other positions.

I’d back Kim to be more likely to start ahead of Upamecano than Varane - and they’re selling both Pavard and Hernandez so they have no equivalent to Lindelof as 3rd choice. They also didn’t spend 220m last year and have a far more complete squad than us. CB is clearly a logical priority position for them - it isn’t for us.

Hernandez is out with ACL basically half a season and some talks he wants to leave to PSG also. Pavard also maybe on his way out, depends if Tuchel switches to back 3 or not.
