So what does he do that makes him seem like a donkey? you’re just posting shite aren’t you?
I am only posting what Rasmus said regarding who he thought the best defender he faced was in Italy and this was a player that a lot of Man Utd fans ridiculed because of his lack of technique.
Why would I want us to pay 50mil for a lesser player from the same league?

What makes him a lesser player?
Do you actually have an opinion on the player or are you basically just saying all the CBs in Seria A are donkeys?

Rasmus Hojland stated that Smalling was the best defender he has come up against in Serie A.....let that sink in before everyone starts doing a ' Sancho day' on this donkey.
"this donkey"

Smalling is decent.
In all honesty do you see nothing wrong in us selling a player for about 15mil and he excels in the same league and then be rumoured to want to pay 13mil more than a release clause of 40mil for this bloke?

Because you have no idea if he is a lesser player because you haven’t watched him play.

Players rate other players differently. Rio’s toughest opponent was Louis Saha, Vidic’s was Drogba when you could argue it could be Torres. Does that mean they were better players than R9 or Henry? It’s a weird post to make and you have no rational on why you called him a donkey

I’m not too sure what’s your context posting about Smalling but to be fair, defensively Smalling is actually very solid. It’s just on the ball, he’s like a donkey.

Why would I have an issue with it? We sold Evans for 3m and he did very well at Leicester, does that mean we shouldn't sign any CBs from the EPL?

Watch the player and judge for yourself if you think he is good enough

Are you a Napoli supporter?

Having 3 right footed rcb seems unrealistic if lindelof stays. it depends if ten hag thinks shaw is good enough as our 2nd lcb.

Plenty of teams play CB's with the same stronger foot and do just fine.

But I think its also clear Shaw is top notch at CB.

Rasmus Hojlund is also a massive fan of Manchester United by the way, so take that for what it's worth.

Smalling... even at this stage of his career is rated higher by one of the top strikers in Italy.
Why would we be interested in bringing a player like that to the club for 50mil?

because one of our starting central defenders is made of glass and is constantly injured

This is a bizarre take.

Patrice Evra recently said that James Milner was the toughest opponent he came up against. Does that make him a world class player?

There are so many other factors to take in to account.

If Smalling is the best defender in Italy, how come he doesn't play for the best team in Italy?

Roma play under a very defensive manager whereas Napoli play under a more attacking manager.

We need to sign the best possible players for the system that ETH wants to play.

If KMJ is a donkey, I guess 98% of all CBs in the world are too. Because he is a top 10 CB if not higher. Smalling isn't even half as good as him. KMJ is faster, way better at passing (both short and long), build up, aerial duels, physique and fighting spirit. Smalling probably has more experience that's about it.

I'm sold!

Are there any legit links between us and this guy ?

Not really. Eurosport, Daily Mail, Irish Sun, goal.com and of course the revered hardtackle.com (first to break the news on Joe Garner's transfer from Fleetwood Town to Carlisle United) are all reporting it in the past few days though.

It looks like we are about to activate this guy's £39m release clause to make him our first summer signing, £39m isnt a bad price for a 25 year old with his potential.

It can't be activate till June?

At £50-60m we'd be spending over half our budget on him. Definitely not worth it when it's not even the second most important position we need to strengthen and arguably not even the third.
I do wonder if the club will look at him for commercial reasons as well :nervous:

Smalling probably is one of the best defenders in Italy on his day. He was one of the best defenders we had on his day. So it's not surprising some strikers think he's hard to play. He's big, very fast, hard to beat.

The problem was when it wasn't that day and he came up with ridiculous brainfarts and that's probably what Rasmus didn't see when he played him. Plus terrible passing.

Slightly harsh with the brainfarts and terrible passing, Smalling has been fairly composed on the ball in his time in Italy and certainly not error prone to any noticeable extent but it is a very different league.

You are right about the opinion of Rasmus being pointless in this debate though. He is a striker and so his only criteria is how easy it is to win his individual duals with his opponent and Smalling is an experienced pro who is physical and positionally sound so Rasmus won't get much change out of him.

It does? It’s all rumours right now.

I think the point around the difference in Serie A is probably the main reason why he looks okay with his passing if that's the case, I can't say I have kept an eye on Smalling. But when I do catch Serie A it usually strikes me that it is played at a very methodical pace in comparison to the Premier League. Throw Chris Smalling into our backline when every team presses the hell out of us, especially away from home and I think we'd see old 50p feet again. I'm not a big believer in substantially developing touch and passing late in a career, I think it's mostly the context of the league, system and probably confidence, but that confidence is also derived from the context.

Given our budgetary constraints this summer, a new CB should be far down the list of priorities. Improve the GK position and all our existing CBs will go up a level.

I think I will go with the opinion of a striker that has played in the league before anyone on here if you don't mind and if he is not one of the top strikers I assume we will get him cheaply if we move for him???

Jesus Christ

I tend to agree. It's a nice to have, probably not a neccessity. I'd make it 4th or maybe even 5th priority and I doubt we're going to secure 5 signings, one of which is an expensive striker. But maybe ETH sees the priorities differently if he goes for this early in the window.

Signing Kim in a position where we already have Licha, Varane, Lindelof, and Shaw while we have a poor keeper, no backup for Casemiro, no top midfield partner for Casemiro, a poor excuse for a RW, and no worthwhile CF (assuming Rashford's future is on the left) would be madness.

Similar to Klopp signing Donkey Darwin while ignoring his atrocious midfield options, it would result in disaster next season.

This would only make sense if VL or RV is leaving for roughly the same as what Kim would cost, and I have heard no rumours about that.

This guy would be good but only if we sell Harry Maguire. Can’t afford to waste money when we need a top ST. Most of our budget will probably be going on a ST. And since we’re poor at selling players I can’t see much money coming in from sales.

obviously you don't bring him in unless maguire goes which we all know is going to happen this summer

Yeah would be about the same priority as mine, maybe 5th if we can get a new GK but if not then make it 4th on the list.

Lindelöf only has 1 year left on his contract (+1 year option) and has had some interest from Inter and Atletico Madrid. He’s mentioned his frustration about lack of game-time in interviews so I think it would be a good time this summer to let him go if we believe we can get Kim in.

One of the reasons we’ve been so poor with sales is that we’re so damn undecisive. We should have made good money on Lingard and Henderson for examle but fecked it up by holding on too long.
If we wait a couple of years we could very well find ourselves having to replace both Victor and Varane, regretting we didn’t look to solve it now when we had the opportunity.

Yeah replacing Lindelof with Kim works
