Kieran McKenna | Close to signing long term deal to stay at Ipswich

Nah United fan but I live in Ipswich and go to the odd game. I was at the Burnley game last season too. 0-0 wasn't it? Thought Ipswich were the better team that day as well.

Yep that’s the one. 0-0, then I think we lost 2-1 away. Assuming you’re not an ST holder, have you found it more difficult to get tickets to league games this year? I’ve spent the last 10 or 15 years always being able to make a decision in the day if necessary, which I certainly can’t do now.

I've got friends who are season ticket holders and his missus often doesn't fancy the midweek games so I get to go occasionally. I was considering getting a membership and then trying to grab a half season ticket if anything becomes available later this year.

I know what you mean, when I first arrived here they were playing shit on a stick Mick McCarthy ball but now they're actually a joy to watch. Understandable that more people want to go and watch irrespective of recent success. There's a really good buzz about the team since McKenna took over.

I’ll be interested to see if the half season tickets happen again this year. We’ve always had a notional limit for STs of about 20k, but it’s never been reached until this year, so it’s been easy to sell a few more at Xmas. Their hands might be tied now.

:(

I'll just have to keep bumping the odd freebie then.

Kieran has done an excellent job at Ipswich. I've been keeping a close eye on them ever since he took over and I'm very impressed with the progress he's made. He hasn't even spent a mad amount of money either.

Hope he sticks it out with Ipswich as would be some achievement if he could get them into the playoffs.

Hopefully he returns back to United one day. Very exciting young manager with huge potential.

Another win today, should get him back to manage us again.

Turns out the caff knows nothing and the highly rated coach becomes a highly rated manager afterwards. Unsurprising for anybody who had watched the youth teams under him.

3-1 against 3rd placed Preston at half time.
Indebted to a certain B Williams for putting us back in front after they equalised.

If scores stay like this there will be an 8 point gap between Ipswich in 2nd, and Preston in 3rd place. I don’t know what McKenna does but my god it works.

Must be nervously looking at the United results lately in case we decide to make a managerial change, I imagine McKenna will be one of the choices.

Ha, yes I seriously am! I think he’d be considered too high risk, but you never know. He’d probably be cheap, and your owners are big fans of cheap.

I wouldn’t come back if I were him, considering how the players downed tools last time under Solskjær when McKenna was coach.

Yep, he may be the only one out of all potential new managers, who has seen Utd from the inside. So if things are as bad as some people say then he’ll know about it. Still, what a job to turn down. I can’t believe many managers have turned you down since AF left.

The love-in for McKenna and Carrick is good to see, especially when a large portion of the forum called them shite when they were coaching at United.

Maybe, just maybe it wasn't McKenna, Ole or Carrick. It was the toxic dressing rooms we always seem to have.

How has Williams been playing for you guys?

Good to see him doing well, was a highly regarded coach when he was managing the u18s. Armchair experts are mostly clueless, and love to talk out of their asses. Hope you guys win the whole thing.

He wasn’t playing a huge amount at the start of the season, though that might have been a fitness thing, I’m not sure if he had a pre-season really at Utd. But he’s gone from playing in the league cup games initially to playing a lot more in the league last month or so. He scored a late equaliser away at Huddersfield last Saturday, and scored again today to put us 2-1 in front, both taken quite confidently.
I’ve been quite impressed without thinking he’s a world beater. He gets forward well, which KM pretty much demands from his fullbacks, and he’s happy to get stuck in when things get a bit physical as the Champ often does. In fact I think he secretly enjoys that niggly bit. If we had the option to buy him at a reasonable price I’d be delighted, but he’s apparently on more than £50k a week at Utd. To give you an idea of where that sits with the rest of our squad, I think our next highest player is on 14k! So we are well and truly priced out in terms of wages, which is a shame.

Ah cheers!

Kind of what I had expected him to perform then. I'd always liked him because he's tries to do the right things like carry the ball, make runs, pass progressively, be proactive defensively etc but he's not really shown a consistent high level for us, which is a shame. If he does all of the things you've said throughout the season, it sounds like he could be a good to very good player for you. All the best!

Him and Carrick took a lot of flak from both Ole-supporters and Ole-detractors. Either they were dragging Ole down, or they were in the job because they were Ole's mates, and another reason he had to go.

Turns out both know what they're doing, especially McKenna.

Them managing at different clubs, in different environments at a different level and doing well now doesn't prove anything of their time at Utd.

ETH is far more qualified and has done things at a higher level but is still struggling. McKenna and Carrick could very well have been incredibly talented and brilliant at coaching during their time at Utd and it still wouldn't have mattered because they didn't show it. Whether it was their fault or not.

You can't project what they have achieved now to say they knew what they were doing when they were here. It's far more likely, they've taken the experience and cauldron of pressure at Utd and have channelled into the success they have now at a lower level. It's not linear.

Not sure what triggered you about my comment. A tad defensive, perhaps?

Them doing as well as they've done elsewhere proves, if nothing else, that they weren't clueless, unqualified dolts who were dragging Ole down/only here because they were mateys, as a sizable portion on both sides of the Ole divide liked to argue.

Anybody who has watched Williams from his academy days knows he absolutely enjoys it. Man loves a scuffle.

McKenna is real deal. Just watched several match highlights in championship. His team plays entertaining attacking football. Fast transition in numbers, play from back also with an eyes on long ball to run behind. Quick switch and overload to use or create space, pass and move with one touch football combined with individual brilliance of ball control and dribbling. There are so many elements in their play. And, it seems he rotates the squad quite often (not sure about that)? No20 is really talented but only plays one game after another as it seems.

I wouldn't worry too much if I were mate. He has seen the circus that is our current management structure, that he will want to stay away as far as possible. Not until we get rid of the Glazer parasites, should he or any other self respecting manager consider taking on the job.

Hopefully you lot get promoted to the PL and can take him off our hands.

He'd be a starter for us at present with our current injury problems!

Exactly. The thing is that I am not sure about his best position even though he is always used as left or right fullback. One of his main strengths is to run with the ball to break into the final third, fast, direct, and aggressive. Today he scored a solo goal starting between mid and lower third, all the way to the edge of the box to produce a precisely measured shot to the far corner. It’s like what Bale has been doing when he originally played as fullback to show his best position can be a more advanced attacking role.

Yep, there's a process to these things. Go prove yourself, build your legitimacy up before telling a guy like Ronaldo that he needs to angle his pressing runs in a certain way.

Not sure what triggered you to think I was triggered or defensive? I simply made a comment and observation that what they've done now (i.e after the fact) is no indication that they weren't clueless or ineffective during their time here. It doesn't prove anything, especially when they are in a different position as managers of their own clubs at a much lower level, scrutiny and profile of players with a lot more autonomy.

I personally don't think they were the right choice because they were under a manager, who was poor himself but am very happy with how well they are doing now. However, that doesn't absolve them of their potential inexperience and issues that they may have caused during our time under Ole.
