Ki Sung Yeung

Thought he did quite well again considering the opposition. People were talking about someone able to fill in for Carrick (Fletcher too I guess) and if thats a job role we're looking to fill then he's a good option

Regarding all the "Carrick understudy" posts: I was holding out until after the Brazil game because everyone and their grandmother was betting Brazil would try and shut him down and wanted to see how he responded, and now I agree. I think we might be missing out on something here, especially at the prices currently being quoted (6m-9m)

He didn't lose possession even once yesterday, this while being swarmed by sometimes three players at a time with Brazil's players clearly instructed to close him down as the central cog in SK's game.

Superb field vision and first touch; clever one-touch passing and Scholesian cross-field balls, immense work-rate, excellent tackler, and he's a big lad, too. Also speaks perfect English.

Really does look like Celtic are hoping for him to medal so they can ask for a bit more.

I thought he looked excellent, until Korea as a team faded.

Good passing range, sound when put under pressure, awareness, quick feet, good work rate.

I'd be tempted to have a punt. I've not seen him bar the olympics though.

Celtic midfielder Ki Sung-Yueng insists he knows nothing of stories linking him with a move to Arsenal.

The 23-year-old, labelled South Korea's answer to Steven Gerrard in his homeland, has been the outstanding performer as his side surpassed expectations to win bronze in the London 2012 Olympic football tournament.

Reports this week had suggested the Gunners were preparing a £9 million bid for the tireless playmaker, who is also believed to be the subject of interest from last season's Europa League winners Atletico Madrid.

But, after producing another polished display to help his country see off bitter rivals Japan in a hotly contested third-place playoff at the Millennium Stadium on Friday evening, Ki revealed he is not aware of any interest.

"I'm not sure," Ki told reporters. "I haven't heard anything about that.

"I just need some rest now and spend some time with my family, and then I will think about my future."

The Celtic star also admitted he was delighted to claim a victory which not only secures him and his team-mates an Olympic medal, but also grants them exemption from military service in South Korea.

"This is the happiest moment of my life," he added. "We were very tired after the quarter-final, but our mentality to win the game was very strong.

"Normally we pressure in front of the centre circle, but we were tired tonight.

"We weren't fresh enough to play that way, so we dropped down a little bit, but we still had quick players up front to hit them on the counter-attack.

"Military service was something we were all going to have to do, and we are all glad to avoid it, because it means we can play in Europe for longer. It was a big motivation, definitely."

Would be a good option for Arsenal's squad as well as our own. With military service out of the way and his performances at the Olympics it would be unsurprising if he made a move like this. A less fancy Javi Martinez, the same age too.

Surely the way Arsenal treated their Park can't have sat well with him. But who knows.

At this point, one thing is for dead certain: If he weren't Asian this thread would be quite a bit bigger.

There's no other explanation for how this kid isn't getting talked about at +15m prices. No one who watched any of those Olympic matches could have possibly failed to notice him. Brazil certainly did; they were terrified of him, and rightly so. So this near-complete lack of awareness on the caf is understandable, if somewhat amusing.

One quibble regarding the "Carrick understudy" angle: Ki not only retains the ball under pressure light years better than MC, he also has that "first touch to create yard of space" routine down pat. I lost count of the number of times he sent a closing-down player the wrong way with their arms pinwheeling and me thinking: "You know, that is an awfully familiar sight." He really is a physically larger version of Paul Scholes, except he's an excellent tackler as well.

If we got outbid by Atletico Madrid I'd be very worried about our finances. :D

I think it's less to do with him being Asian and more to do with him playing for Celtic.

Normally that'd be about par for a caf joke.

I like your posts, so I'll give you the benefit of the doubt, but if that wasn't a joke, it kind of proved the point, since no one who watched him during the Olympics would have said that. Try to understand that the kid was that outstanding. Again, to the point where Brazil decided to routinely double and triple team him and he still never lost the ball and had a 90-something pass rate. There's a reason the three caftards who saw him play have all raved about him.

Someone's going to pick him up for around 10m and get a very good player.

Would we be absolutely mad not to consider signing this guy then?

No idea about how he's done in the SPL, but on his Olympics performances he's certainly better than Anderson and Cleverley. So he'd do more than improve our squad, he'd improve the team.

Good short and long passing, skillful on the ball, 6'2, quick, hammer of a shot, very two footed, likes a tackle, can take set pieces... Other than that he's awful.

So what are we waiting for?

Sign him up Fergie.

He sounds good. Arsenal should buy him.

It wasn't purely a joke, but it was facetious so I'll explain what I mean.

You asked why more people aren't excited by him.

The first problem is who on here as seen him play for Celtic and how much respect does a player get for being good in the SPL. In the pecking order the PL, Liga, Serie A and Bundesliga are seen as the big leagues. Portugal, Holland and France are treated as the smaller fry. All others are treated with suspicion at best.

Combine that with how many people watched the Olympic football that intensely. Personally I watched GB, some Spain, some Brazil - looking at the squad lists, I'd have expected Brazil or Spain to win it - that's how easy it is to miss the real story. I didn't see Korea until the QF.

Hopefully our scouts are less blinkered. I'm sure SAF still has contacts in the Scottish game, and until recently in the Korean squad. I guess we'll soon see.

The reason for that is clear: simply that not many of us watched the games, period. Anyone who saw the games noticed him. He was impossible to miss.

If you ever get a chance just download one or more of the group stage matches and watch them. I guarantee you will thoroughly enjoy his performances.

(And of course anyone will agree with the point that performances in a weaker league are not always a good barometer for a player's ability.)

Fee agreed with Swansea according to sky sports news. Think it was £5 million which is a steal and would be an amazing signing for them.

would be interesting to see how he does, and if we need him as backup for carrick in january, he will not be cuptied and probably cost around 15m.

I love Laudrup, Michu for £2m, Chico for £2m, De Guzman on loan and this fella for £5m.

Apart from the fact he's about as similar to Carrick as De Laet is.

I bet he costs more than that and is better than Joe Allen  Gotta love Laudrup's business bringing in Michu and Ki for about half of what they got for him.

Michu is essentially a Sigurdsson replacement and he could easily be as good as him. Ki replaced Allen and he should be very good as well. Shrewd business when you consider Sigurdsson was £7m more expensive than Michu and Ki cost £10m less than they got for Allen, £17m in the bank and you end up with the same quality.

There's no value in the market.

Definitely, it's amazing how themselves and paticularly Newcastle have done lately. I mean 3-4 years ago Newcastle overpaid for Mercenaries and ruined young talent, and now they've become this incredibly shrewd team.

I think Laudrup's reputation in football as a player and manager both has helped him bring such players to Swansea.

For sure, it's exciting to watch no doubt, makes a change from rich sugardaddies. Just baffles me that a Welsh team are in the top division tbh.

There's just something insanely likable about Swansea. The style of football they've played for a while, having a bunch of good players having breakout seasons there last year... Gylfi joining them didn't hurt either. And this off season, getting Laudrup and having him make some great purchases definitely sements them as my 2nd favourite team in the league.

Without question the style of football Swansea have been playing will attract some good players if the top clubs in the league arent interested in them

Excellent piece of business from Swansea. A lot felt them and Norwich would suffer from second season syndrome after losing their managers, but I can only see that happening to Norwich. It seems that Laudrup will have them playing a similar style of football and he's been astute transfer wise. I'm not sure if Ki will be just quite good enough to play for us, but he'll certainly be a very good player for Swansea.

Crazy to think the way Liverpool have been spending over the past couple of years when they could've had a player like Ki for a lot less, and he would be better than most of the midfielders they've signed.

Swansea, eh? Good signing for them for the reasons posted above by everyone.

This guy would have been perfect in Scholes' position today. Fellaini would have had no joy against him (same height, Fellaini's probably the better jumper, but Ki is stronger).

Ah, well.

Ki is a brilliant signing for them. I'd even take him here. He had a great Olympics.

That's the smart thing about bringing in a manager outside of England. He's able to buy players like he's done that he knows and there's virtually no competition from other English teams. De Guzman was an excellent player for him at Mallorca. Laudrup has shown what he can do with a limited team in a strong league and he probably has contacts and good relationships all over the football world. Not something the likes of Martin O'Neill, Brendan Rodgers or Harry Redknapp can boast of however good managers they may be.
