Kevin Strootman

If there's any doubt about his long term fitness then we should just leave well alone, we don't want another Hargreaves.

I doubt Van Gaal will give up so easily on his main midfielder and brain of the whole Netherlands team but at least we're already cautious when it comes to fitness problems when scouting Vidal.

Cant afford too many setbacks for us to move on from him. We need a good amount of game time to be confident over his recovery, otherwise we wont be in for him this summer.

I've never been convinced and he's had a very serious injury and now this. LVG acting like he's the only capable midfielder in the world is pissing the hell out of me. There's that Morgan lad that plays for Sotton, then there's Vidal who has recovered fully and a couple of others. But we're going to wait for Strootman to be fit, then splash silly money on him, it doesn't make sense.

Time to forget about Kevin Strootman. Roma want 80m or whatever and they can go feck themselves.

There's nothing to prevent us from revisiting Strootman a year from now, by which time we may find that Carrick is running on fumes.

Avoid at all cost until he has played a full season without another injury. I thought the club would have learnt from the mistake they made with Hargreaves.

But has LVG himself said that, or are you just drawing that conclusion based on the transfer rumour mill?

I think he's overrated.
I honesty couldn't say, as I've never seen him play. But I do find it interesting how indifferent many were to signing him the summer before he went to Roma. He must have had one hell of a half-season (or however long he played before his injury,) to change so many minds so quickly.

I must admit I was one of them. It's always hard to judge players from the Eredivisie, you never know how they fare in a better league. Strootman was very good in the Netherlands and he was one of the better players in the under 21s tournament in 2013. Still, he didn't look as good as Thiago, Isco or Verratti there. With that being said he was basically an instant success for Roma and actually improved his performances compared to what he offered in the Dutch league. Prior to his injury he was a better player than Blind in my opinion. Quite a lof of people on here weren't that keen on Blind in the summer and have probably changed their opinion on him since then, I'd imagine the same would happen if Strootman reaches his old level and would come here.

If we sign him after this then I'm going to lose faith with the board who allow our club to sign players who are injury prone.

There are other CM's out there who we can get. We didn't sign Vidal because of his injury so I'm hoping we don't sign Strootman, other wise the Dutch bias we be even more visible!

Not compared to Strootman and I wouldn't consider Herrera an allrounder, he's better in a lot of things than winning the ball. With Strootman it's hard to tell what his strongest ability is, he's good at most things.
Herrera is so underated defensively, he worked on it hard, I remebr he missed a lot of challenges in the summer but when the league started he looked so sharp and absolutely excelled defensively, didn't give away silly fouls and won a lot of balls, I believe his taklcing is much better than fellaini's who is late even just before he decides to make the takle. Just because he is lighweight doesn't mean he can't play in the side and do the job defensively, Va Gaal has very clouded view on this. Muscles not needed imo. Strootman would do good here in his"prime" he is stronger but much worse technicaly and I believe Herrera is the best palyer we bought for this reason in a long time. Manager should get a grip and build the team around this player...

I watched him before his terrible injury and he didn't really strike as a "special" player. I'm not saying he is shit or anything like that, just that I don't get the fuss about him.

had we signed him from PSV , then he would probably had cost us 15-20million which is good value imo. not really world class but a very good international class midfielder.

now, for 30-40 million, plus his serious knee injury...i'm not so sure.

But he's dutch so it doesn't matter . Depay will come as well , you watch .
LVG won't rest until we've got a trumpet each and all sing "we've got the whole world in our hands" at every home game .

Its all but over for Strootman. Look at what happened to Michael Essien. Kevin's injuries aren't as severe as Essien's but it pretty bad, I'd say about 75 percent of what Michael experienced. Even in this day and age, suffering back to back injuries on the same knee is hard to overcome .

In the 27 signings he has made between Bayern and United, 2 of them have been Dutch.

Not so sure if that is correct. At Bayern Pranjic, Braafheid and Robben were his signings. You could perhaps say Luis Gustavo too. At United it's Blind and Rojo, you could argue about the rest. I might be missing something from his Bayern period though, the number 27 makes me curious.

As for Strootman, it's a tragedy for him but RVN, Robben, RVP have all struggled with injuries in their careers and still made it to the top, so it's not the end of the world.

For the pessimistc people: at Bayern, Van Gaal was a keen admirer of Vidal. Then he talked this summer with Holland about how he wanted to sign him. After joining United he also made comments about how he'd like to sign Vidal (and also Messi, meaning it was not possible at that time). With Strootman, he only replied to questions about liking him, to which he replied positively. I don't remember him brining Strootman's name up in the same way he talked about Vidal.

Forgot Braafhied and Pranjic is Croatian...

I just don't want to see this transfer happen. The last thing we need is a Falcao scenario of:

"well he needs time to get back to his best"
"He was bound to pick up other little injuries while he gets fit"

On top of people saying "but how good is he actually? He had a purple patch in the Italian league before he got injured..."

Yeah I agree, not even so much because of the injuries, but Strootman isn't Maradona. With the prices mentioned, he should be our 4th or 5th choice, and then he would need to be fully fit too. But I'm not under the impression that Van Gaal rates him so highly. For Holland, yes. And both have a history at Sparta Rotterdam, Strootman is a nice guy, intelligent and ideal for a coach and they seem to like each other. But my guess is that Van Gaal rates Vidal higher, simply because he is a better player than Strootman, like most on here know. Combined with his Vidal comments, I think Strootman is plan C or D.
