Kevin Strootman

Hard to tell, he didn't lose possession but mostly played it sideways. Moved about a lot but doesn't look the most agile, it is hard to see what he offers that Schneiderlin doesn't for less money, no ACL issues and PL experience.

That's my impression form this game, we can't be too critical as its just his 4th game back, he certainly still looks comfortable on the ball, from his position in the Roma side, I'd wager if we were to go for him he'd take Fellaini's position, now Fellaini bashing aside, Afro-man has been decent for us since his return, if we were to fork out 30mill+ this window I'd rather we do it in a position that would immediately be an upgrade.

Thought it was obvious that he's nowhere near fit. The whole game was slow paced and I thought he was no different. Still, what I think was obvious, although he completely lacks match practice, is the fact that he's a far more intelligent passer than Fellaini, while offering nearly the same physicality. Obviously the EPL is a different thing. I was astonished at how poor and slow the game actually was yet again. Roma is one the best sides in Italy and Udinese is a decent side as well, I don't think you could have guessed that, watching this game. I liked Allan from Udinese again, he should move to a better club, he's seems ready for the next level.

Being realistic, is he really likely to regain full fitness and top form soon enough to actually be worth signing in this window? Surely we'd be better off just leaving him until the summer and letting him prove his fitness and form at Roma first?

I mean I can't see not signing Strootman costing us a CL place so what would be the big plus in signing him this month?

I'm starting to think Strootman is key to going back towards what we started the season with in midfield.

LVG said he was surprised by how physical the game is and he's put Fellaini into the first team, clearly to add physicality to the team. And I believe thats also why Rooney is being used in a deeper role, because he's our 2nd physically strongest option in there

Strootman has a physical side to his game, he can hold off challenges and keep the ball and unlike Fellaini he can both play the anchor role in midfield (although he wont be at his best because he wont get forward much) and he can reliably pass the ball around at a good tempo to help our attacks.

Whether he plays at the anchor, or where he had his good season at Roma on the left of a midfield 3, his physical strength should allow some of our more lightweight players like Ander and Mata, or Di Maria as a CM to be used a bit more often.

The other way to look at it is LVG might keep Fellaini on the right and put Strootman in the same midfield to have lots of strength in midfield. At that point I'm not sure Mata/Ander would get much of a look in so I'm hoping for the former and not the latter, but it could surely go either way

As others have mentioned we have issues in other areas, should wait until the summer before even thinking of signing him to see how he gets on.

Managed to catch a couple of Gundogan's match since his return, he isn't close to his best but tbh he still impressed me with some of his passing and movement. Vidal has looked terrible since his return.

I dont currently rate Strootman. IMO, if we bought him today, he would not be an upgrade. In 6 months it might be a different situation.
Vidal - I've seen what he can do. But the video which I can't get out of my head is the one where a midfielder is breezing past him, and he goes onto score, running from his own half. It was like he was running in treacle and he basically gave up the chase. Evra gave him a puzzled look as if to say, "You gave up that easily?". Vidal was giving the impression of player in his late 30's. He would definitely struggle for pace, in the PL.

The funny thing is that whoever we are going after, seems to be recovering from a career threatening injury. Falcao. Strootman. Vidal.

Falcao 2.0. We should loan him out with an option to buy. Van Gaal will buy him though, now or at the end of the season, no matter his condition. He is obsessed with him.

With an already injury prone squad, it'd be better to avoid such players.

Came on at HT and provided an assist within 3 minutes for Totti as Roma fought back from 2-0 down to Lazio to earn a draw.

Wouldn't it make more sense to keep the £30 million mooted to sign a player who hasn't been great since his injury and try sign Pogba back? Surely £50 million would get their attention.

Nothing about anyone saying we can get Pogba back makes any sense. Just stop.

Looked like he twisted slightly but it wasn't much, very dodgy though given how obsessed our manager is with him.

Wooooosh, straight over your heads.

rather than worrying about Strrotman....just play Herrera. Better player in all areas for me

Thought he was a dead cert for January 2015. What happened?

Us spending more than 110 million in the last windows, on midfielders like Fellaini, Herrera, Blind, Di Maria who's best position is said to be 'midfield' (something I don't really agree with) because he had his best season playing there with Xabi&Modric.

Combinded with the fact that Carrick, Ando, Fletcher and Pereirra (Cleverly even?) are still on our wage list? At the moment we have more than enough midfielders. But obviously we failed to sign that one truly world class midfielder who would actually really help us, whether it is a Modric-type or Vidal type wouldn't even matter.

what would he offer that we don't have? i've never seen him play. (or noticed him if he was playing for holland.)

He's good at passing and ball-winning. He's an allrounder. That's what we don't really have. Same thing with our defence really, we don't have a defender who's good in all departments (f.e. passing, tackling, heading).

Except Herrera is also good at passing and ball winning. I think the difference is that Strootman is a little more careful in possession and he is also a more physical presence.

so like blind with speed?

Not compared to Strootman and I wouldn't consider Herrera an allrounder, he's better in a lot of things than winning the ball. With Strootman it's hard to tell what his strongest ability is, he's good at most things.
