He is tall and physical, but he isn't slow, he just prefers to use passes rather than run with the ball, he's fast at tracking back.

No, we don't, our style of play is just too slow and patient, we don't take enough risks, don't pass the ball around quick enough, we lack confidence and LVG doesn't help it with his boring tactics.

Certainly not. Blind isnt slow, he's just slow compared to full backs who are usually turbo boosted speed merchants who play against turbo boosted speed merchant wingers.

As a central midfielder Blind is faster than for example Carrick, Strootman, Fernando and so on. They'd all fare poorly in a foot race with a winger too

You don't put someone who is slow at wingback. Slow for a fullback? Sure if they have other qualities like Blind. Someone slower than most central midfielders?

Get out of here, he'd never catch up with play, never get back to defend and never get down the wing to provide width going forward.

He is slow, no doubt about it. One of our slowest players.

Carrick for instance would crush him in a foot race.

Clocked 27.5 km/h at the World Cup, alongside the likes of Wilshere and Vidal. By no means a speed merchant but far from slow. About middle of the road really, which given his fantastic positioning is plenty good enough.
 
They are both speedier than Xabi Alonso, if they continue to develop their passing game and their intelligence, they will be fine.

We should probably discuss those statistics further, in the Strootman thread, statistics of a tournament where he didn't participate.

For thinking he's taller and stronger than Blind?

2 summers ago I thought he was overrated by people on here that were looking at their FM screens, talking about him being the new Roy Keane. I still don't think he's that although he was clearly a good player last season.

But again I'd have to say he's overrated. That doesn't mean I don't think he'd be a good option for us - although as with Falcao I'd be very concerned about fitness. I just cant think of a large amount of central midfielders who would add strength/power to our midfield and are very good passers of the ball.

I'm thinking Strootman, Schneiderlin, Iturasspe at Bilbao... And then thats about it? So if its strength that LVG is looking for so that we can see more of the likes of Ander, then sure someone like Strootman is fine with me

For thinking he's someone who could add strength and power to our midfield. Unless I'm mistaking you for another poster you more than implied he's not an imposing player at all.

For what it's worth, I agree with your general sentiment. He's a bit too slow for my liking, there are better, more dynamic options out there.

I definitely dont remember suggesting he's not imposing, but I'm also too lazy to go and check. So lets just say if I did say he's not stronger than our current set of midfielders (minus Fellaini) then I was wrong. As I was also wrong when I didnt rate him - that part I do remember
 
Strootman is definitely faster than Blind, who is clearly slow. Strootman drives forward more often, too. If we signed him I would think he'd be our 8, in front of Blind/Carrick, and then another CM/AM to make a trio, be it Herrera, Mata, Rooney or Di Maria.

Presumably they're on about keepers throwing the ball, rather than throw ins. Quite a few keepers with high numbers. Quite silly to combine them though, if that's what they've done.
 
Am I the only one who thinks that all these Strootman rumors are just lazy journalism and are based only on the fact that LVG liked him when he was coaching Holland?

Or the fact that van Gaal openly said he likes him while he was our manager and that he'd wait and see how he recovers before moving forward?

That's all it requires for a story these days. That said, it would be a bit counterintuitive to think Van Gaal wouldn't be interested in him given his comments about how critical he is for Holland, and the fact that he could use a good midfielder as Carrick winds down.
 
Gutted for the bloke but I think we need to stay well clear from him, we have enough serial injured players as it is already.
 
Feel sorry for him, but that should put an end to LvG's pursuit of him (if as reported there was such pursuit). Time to look for other options.

Even though van Gaal loves him, he should look to sign somebody else in that position.
