Kevin Strootman

Sky sports had Van Gaal on a while ago confirming our interest, in the interview he indicated that we are waiting to see how he comes back from injury.

Sky hosts saying we have submitted a bid but Roma are unwilling to sell.

Are we pushing for him now? Maybe they were reporting paper gossip, not really sure.

I wont be surprised if we take the risk and bid for him during this transfer window. What he needs is him playing 2-3 friendly games

Won't make sense though considering we'll have two injured midfielders.

It depends.

If he plays in 1-2 friendly games then we may take the risk. The fact that Carrick is injured may actually force our hand. VG may not want to start with Fletcher being our only DM.

Could Strootman even pass a medical even on deadline day? I doubt it but who knows.

If he didn't get injured he'd likely be a United player now. Feck sake I still can't believe Moyes vetoed him last summer when he would have costed only 18M now we'll have to pay double.
To be fair, half the Caf was unconvinced on Strootman.

But his potential was clear to see, still had a good season with PSV it was mainly his performances in the under 21's Euro's which weren't good that turned people off.

I'm worried that if we wait on Strootman so hold off buying what we need now could damage our challenge for top 4.

We're already struggling with Carrick being out for awhile, not recruiting now will mean we don't particularly have a centre midfield good enough for the Premier League. Herrera aside, our other players don't strike fear into many teams; Fletcher, Fellaini and Cleverley; that's a very poor selection.

What happens if we get to January, Strootman hasn't recovered well, we end up not being able to bring in the quality that we have available this summer; then we'd definitely struggle to get into Europe for a second year running. That would be disastrous.

Get de Jong in now, under 10million and would add steel to the middle and would allow Herrera to play further forward and take some of the defensive duties off him.

Vidal would be an amazing addition to our squad, the talk of being able to buy top players is wearing thin when we're turning down the top players.

If Roma are involved in a push for the title they probably won't be looking to sell him in January.

This.

Also disappointing that United may wait half a season to strengthen midfield further. We're writing off a title push and settling for 4th.

Need to wait and make sure he is truly fit and that the injury did not have a permanent effect on him. Last thing we want is Aquilani Mk II on our hands.

"Strootman is following a normal recovery programme, he has stayed in Boston to work with our physios, Garcia added. He will start running any time soon."

No way he will be fit enough to do a medical or even take part in proper training. Need to make sure he is fully fit before we go in for him in January or next summer even.

Exactly. Anyone who thinks we have a chance of getting him this summer is deluded. I'm worried LvG has put all his eggs in one basket, meaning we won't be signing anyone else.

Don't write off anything just yet. I was initially disappointed when we missed out on Vidal and I was thinking about how our midfield and defence pale in comparison to the likes of Chelsea, Arsenal and Man City. Then I got to thinking about how we are in a transitional period and we have a brilliant manager at the helm. I just watched a repeat of United losing to Liverpool 3-0 at home and I was thinking about how low United were last season. Now we genuinely seem to be in transition with a great manager who expects nothing but perfection from his team.

Hopefully, we can challenge this season without European constraints but even if we finish top 4, we can strengthen our squad next season without being held to ransom and with top players finding us attractive again. I expect a good title challenge and a good run in the domestic clubs given LVG's tactical nous. We will strengthen our midfield and defense given the lack of quality and depth. LVG's himself has acknowledged the lack of central defenders in the team and he will dip into the market sooner or later. Hopefully, he does the same thing with the midfield but if he thinks he is good enough then I trust him given his experience and knowledge of the game. Lets see what he makes out of the likes of Cleverley, Powell, Fletcher, Herrera and Carrick. We might think most of them are horrendous but we don't know what LVG will make of them.

I think this is looking more like a target for next summer myself. Highly unlikely Roma will sell in January if they've still got plenty to play for.

I also don't think the interest in Strootman will cloud van Gaal's judgement this window. If he thinks we need a central midfielder, he'll go and get one. He won't write off half of a season or a full one on the basis that we might then get Strootman in the future.

Plus LVG knows Strootman well so he is in a position to speak about him as a player...but that doesn't mean he has suddenly become United's No.1 Target.

We should go for Nigel De Jong.

I think if they survive without him until November they might take a gamble on selling him in January if the price is right.
I get the feeling that LVG will definitely make the price right for Roma. He alluded to this in the press conference he said that he is injured at the moment but 'we will see' with a rye smile on his face.

You don't know what's going to happen! Just because we haven't signed anybody yet doesn't mean he is settling for 4th place. LVG doesn't strike me as someone who settles!

Sorry, I should've been more clear. I meant that we will be settling for 4th if we don't strengthen further.

It's clear as day that we need another midfielder to give us bite and mobility.

I don't care how good LvG is, he's not going to miraculously extract what we need out out some of the dross we currently have.

Oh of course :D I do think though if Carrick hadn't been injured there would have been a possibility that he could have waited. I do believe him when he says he is going to give it a couple of weeks though. He will know exactly what he needs and who can do the job for him.

Who do you think...?
Who'd you go for then?
Surely our scouts and LvG can find a better player than De Jong. Carvalho for example would be a great investment, he is young, talented and already up there with De Jong. He wouldn't be just a player bought for 6 months. Or if all Lvg wants is someone who can do the job till Strootman then we could buy Tiago. He had a fantastic season at Atletico and he is similar to De Jong. The Bundesliga is also full of good midfielders.

Tiago is 33.

Strootman will be next year(if at all). This won't help in the short term, so there hast to be some one else we will be getting.

Don't guys. This is a Hargreaves waiting to happen. We should wait at least until January and see how he picks up before placing a formal bid.

Hargreaves had a very different kind of knee injury than Strootman and I think Strootman has every chance of making a full recovery. We will probably know much more in January and might make a bid by then. LVG clearly rates Strooman a lot and he would have signed him by now if it wasn't for the injury.

It depends what we say is the standard he needs to pass.

If his recovery is going well and there are no long-term concerns and no other hidden problems, there's no third party telling us we can't sign him. We run the medical.
