Kevin Strootman

He also gets paid on the basis of having a reputation of knowing what goes on in Manchester so when transfer stories drag out over a period as long as this he'll naturally be a part of that regardless of any truth to it.
Has the Thiago "saga" really been that long?

Unfortunately, I still think we'll end up signing him, that statement from PSV sounds like the usual nonsense you hear from clubs trying to jack up the transfer fee.

Why would anyone at United publicly declare their interest in a player and risk destabilizing the transfer?

If Thiago wants a move to us and United want to sign him, what is there to destabilize.

You really are a pessimistic twat aren't you? A semi decent CM in some eyes, and very good in others, and you think it'd be unfortunate that we'd sign a good player? And even if you don't think he's a good player, you've got the tone of someone who's a spoilt rotten fool.

PSV said he's not for sale, but Strootman himself wants to move:

Kevin Strootman is eyeing a move away from PSV Eindhoven - despite the club stating previously he was not for sale.
The Holland international is regarded as key to PSV's chances of challenging for the Eredivisie title next season following the recent departures of Dries Mertens, Erik Pieters and Jeremain Lens.
But the 23-year-old, who is a reported target of Manchester United, told Voetbal International he has also been in talks regarding a switch from the Philips Stadion.
"There are several clubs interested but only when they reach an agreement with PSV do I come into the picture," he said.
"This is not to say that any are in the world's top six.
"There is also interest from Russia, but that is not an option for me. I do not make hasty decisions about my future.
"The opinion of Holland coach Louis van Gaal is also very important with the World Cup in Brazil next year."
Strootman is disappointed Mertens, Pieters and Lens were tempted away from Eindhoven.
"It was very unfortunate that so many players left PSV," he added. "I did not expect Dries Mertens and Pieters would leave the club."
The trio's departure prompted the club's technical director Marcel Brands to say of Strootman last week: "We do not want to lose him.
"He knows himself that he will play another season at PSV."

either he doesnt consider United to be top six in the world or we have't made any solid approach

Other than the 2 Spanish giants and Bayern I'm not sure who else he could put above us in terms of global stature and success.

I do think he's our backup if we can't get Thiago, like the Hargreaves and Senna situation few years ago

I don't think so, to me Thiago is very different and if we do get him then Moyes has a specific role for him. Strootman is more of a jack of all trades, perhaps someone to replace Fletcher should he not recover from the final operation.

Looks like we either were never even in for him or we took a few looks and thought "nah".

I would say it's probably the latter. His performances in U-21 euro were not bad but perhaps not enough to convince us to go for him.

We may not have been in for him but given how we've lost Scholes, Fletcher and (effectively) Giggs from an already looking fairly thin CM line-up before they departed I'd doubt if Thiago (if signed) would be the only addition in that area. I'd hope not anyway.

No we really haven't. I get bloody annoyed by this argument. Of the three that you mentioned we have actually only lost 1 - Scholes. Fletcher is expected back in training this month and Giggs is still around.

You get 'bloody annoyed' at people who question the future of someone who has a serious and recurring medical condition and someone who is 40 in a couple of months and who will be taking a duel responsibility as coach?

You didn't question his future. You said that he was no longer an option. This is not true. And you wrote off giggs as an option despite him playing 20 or so games last year. That's what bloody annoyed me.

Giggs is as good as 40 and now diverting at least part of his energies into coaching and Fletcher has a serious ongoing medical condition that at best is likely to leave him as someone only able to make sporadic contributions. It's like getting angry at people who don't mention Bebe as an option up front.

Wow, you're making friends and influencing people today.

The Giggs coaching is only formalising a situation that effectively existed last year when he and Scholes were the managers link to the players. I don't expect Giggs to be getting involved in any other coaching of the first team. I can imagine that he might get involved with the U21's and U18's, or perhaps in the younger age groups however.

In Fletchers case we've had several official communications from United and the player himself that he expects to be able to resume a full career. Why should we not believe them?

We'll be expecting Bebe to go out on loan again, or get sold, just like we will with Macheda. Unless we expect the same of Giggs or Fletcher I don't see how it is the same situation. It doesn't change the fact that you stated that Fletcher, Scholes and Giggs were no longer options for the squad, which is actually only the case for one of those.

De Rossi has been strongly linked with a move for a good 5 summers now. He always ends up staying. Strootman could be used as a long term successor and sharing games or even in the same midfield

PSV Eindhoven have confirmed Roma have shown an interest in Kevin Strootman, but have reiterated that the midfielder is not for sale.
Strootman, who has previously been strongly linked with a move to Manchester United, has expressed a wish to leave PSV after claiming several clubs are interested.
Reports in Italy have suggested that Roma are closing in on a deal to sign the 23-year-old for a fee of €17million (£14.6m), which could eventually rise to €20m (£17.2m).
However, after selling Erik Pieters, Dries Mertens and Jeremain Lens already this summer, PSV's technical director Marcel Brands does not want to lose another key player, unless a big offer is made for Strootman.
"Roma have contacted us to tell us that they are interested in Kevin Strootman," Brands told Fox Sports.
"We have told Roma that Strootman is not for sale, and only an important offer could convince us otherwise.
"In our opinion, Roma is the only club to be interested in Strootman, but they have made no offer."
Strootman's agent Chiel Dekker is waiting to see if the clubs can come to an agreement before opening any talks about a move to Serie A.
Dekker told De Telegraaf: "We are aware of the interest and the communication between PSV and Roma, but we will only come into action when Marcel Brands gives the signal that both clubs have come to an agreement."

How much did Van Ginkel go for? Maher was like 8 million. Will be silly if Strootman goes for more than either of them

Van Ginkel was around £7m I believe. Strootman will go for more than two of them combined.

So Strootman on the verge of moving to Roma for 16M.

I guess we were never really interested in him, 16M is hardly anything to shout about.

It would be a complete disaster if we don't sign Thiago and fail to sign another CM. As others have said we better have a very good back-up plan.

Its a lot more than international teammates that outshone him this summer. Its hardly surprising if we didnt want him

Thiago isn't enough in any case. Even if he does sign we still won't have solved the ridiculous overreliance on Carrick.

Seems the move to Roma is a done deal?

Absolute gutting if so. Quality player with potential to be outstanding. If true then best of luck to him at Roma.

Well Fergie and Moyes scouts have watched him and obviously he didn't do enough to impress.
Roma are the 6th best team in Italy. It's not as though any United level clubs went for him.
