I'm still gonna side with United officials over RedCafe posters, if we sign him he's been deemed good enough.

Thats cool. I don't want to hear you moan about anyone United sign this summer as it would be a contradiction. I will be watching you Cunto!!!

I wonder how you felt when we signed non-great players in the past then. I rate United's opinion much, MUCH higher than your spoilt mentality.

People should think about this. So, so many people said Carrick was over-priced and a "nothing player". I'm not saying you can't question a signing Utd make but you'd have thought past experience would tell people to give all new signings a chance. Then again it's fairweather followers like Paz who aren't "excited" by this potential transfer, which says it all.

I'll be the first to admit I haven't seen much of Strootman, but from what little I've seen there's a lot to like. But let's not confuse what he would give us and what we also need -- or at least want -- which is that killer footballer in the last third. My jizz is locked and loaded for Ronaldo, but if it can't be Ronaldo I'm good with Bale. Alcantara, a different player than Ronaldo or Bale, would be an outstanding acquisition as well, as would Fabregas. That's the caliber of player we're all looking at joining the squad, but let's not overlook the quality that a player like Strootman -- perhaps such as Strootman himself! -- can give us on those cold weeknights at the Britannia Stadium.

What's pertinent to securing this signing, is that he offers us an alternative to Carrick and Cleverley. We suffered last season from not having an energetic midfielder next to Carrick, when Cleverley wasn't available. Instead, we witnessed the lethargic Giggs and Anderson, while Jones isn't very good with the ball at his feet and doesn't possess the right awareness when it comes to playing midfield. It would be peculiar if he were signed as a first team player, however, it is imperative that we do sign another midfielder because our depth is poor in terms of quality and reliability. He's a good box-to-box midfielder, who scored 6 goals and assisted 10 goals last season in the Eredivisie. That's a goal or assist every 176 minutes, which is good for a box-to-box player. Anyway, for those interested, he captains the side today vs. Spain U21. We can see how good he is when immense pressure is put on him. I'll make a match compilation of his performance, for those who will miss the game, or have no interest.

This could well be the most underwhelming signing in recent times, he's a nothing player. I don't know what some of you are seeing when you watch him, I'm baffled.

Im sorry but some of you on here don't know what you are looking for when you watch a player. Whatelse exactly do you want from such an accomplished young player? If he was British you lot would be wanking yourselves silly over him.

Anderson always brings energy as well as good ability to move the ball with feet. Much like Giggs.

Jones for me was just all over the place and was always giving the free roaming role which is bizarre. Technically Jones isn't that bad. There was that assist in his first season where he ran down the right and dribbled 3 players and had his shot saved for a tap in. I personally feel that wen he plays there he's more trying to make his mark as a player and with his skillset it's not what we really needed. Unless he defied orders and did what he want or was just going for personal glory I didn't understand why he never played as the deeplying anchor man playing like a CB in front of the back four. Even in the Madrid games (that have been pretty much erased from my memory) he was playing more man-marking roaming marking roles.

It was just bizarre. I would love a natural combative and ball playing midfielder to complement Carrick as he starts to get a bit older and (as we've already seen a bit) loses his mobility.

I disagree. While Anderson offers energy in abundance, he can't offer us a few games of good performances consistently. After he came back from injury earlier this year, he looked poor. He's a deceiving player in the sense that he starts off well and has the ability to produce very good displays, but he is lethargic when it comes to the defensive side - he doesn't apply himself enough. Giggs definitely doesn't bring energy into the side - he brings experience in abundance. If he brought energy, the majority of members here would not criticise him, but that isn't the case.

I agree with you on some aspects of Jones. I personally feel he is competent with the ball at his feet, but he isn't even at Cleverley's level where he knows who to pass to before he gets the ball. He even admitted in a recent interview that playing in midfield requires a lot of awareness, something I feel he doesn't possess unless he man-marks a teams' best player.

I am only talking about his style though. His style is to get the ball and attempt to move it with feet and if he can take players on and open up play then he will try (whether or not it will come off probably leads to people getting frustrated which is fair enough. His hollywood pass accuracy is pretty ordinary as well.). It's the total opposite to Carrick's game and that lack of discipline is why they don't complement each other in midfield.

But when you look at Fletcher and Carrick there is not an abundance of ability on the ball going forward. The style is to get rid of it when someone comes near and or look to pass quickly and accurately as quickly as possible. Even Cleverley doesn't have a great ability going forward with the ball at feet. When you look at Giggs he's made a career out of being such a technical master going forward with the ball. Which is probably what Ferguson saw in moving him into midfield.

All these signs point to putting someone in beside Carrick who can mop up attacks and stay tight to his man in defense and win the ball and serve it to him. It was Fletcher's job and before that it was Hargreaves (when he was in MF and beside Carrick). I think it was the Hargreaves - Anderson partnership that was probably their best because their styles complemented with Hargreaves staying tight all the time and Ando getting the ball and being able to take players on in dangerous positions. Plus the 'iWin' get out of jail free pass across everyone to Ronaldo who was open 80% of the time.

In Europe it's a must have nowadays with the amount of technical ability on show. Gone are the days where you can stand off a player in the hope you can win an interception when nobody else is central to direct traffic. Again it's why we got stomped on the counter so much. (Broken record) It just makes sense to have a player in the center of the park moving the play around with his ability to close players one on one and have Carrick with his reading of the game always able to play in the zone and as a partnership and make interceptions.

That's correct. It's actually a myth that Anderson can't make long balls. He completed 80% of long balls last season (66/82). But what I have a problem with is the fact he can't keep himself fit for a long duration. He is a fantastic option to have, he possesses more authority in the final third than Cleverley and can make some very good passes. With that being said, however, Strootman is someone who can stay fit and offer us an alternative, someone who is reliable, as you can see from his performances, which are nothing special, but they represent the side we need.

I think what you're missing is that, while Anderson and Giggs are somewhat positives for the side, they don't offer enough in terms balance. Cleverley was very good in the first half of the season, but fatigue and not having experience at playing at this level (I know he played for Wigan, but the pressure is difference, thus it's a different level) hindered his playing time. Strootman can do a similar job, but I feel he's more well-rounded than Cleverley. We definitely do need to strengthen our depth in midfield, regardless of Strootman. We have Carrick, Cleverley, Anderson, Jones, and Giggs. And only two of them are natural central midfielders, whereas the others have been moved to this position.

I would not suggest relying on Giggs as a central midfielder. In most of the big games he has often lost possession or given the ball away cheaply in midfield. Probably due to his age... But it's silly to expect a 40 year old to be a big part player in the coming season. I feel giggsy should only be considered as an impact player maybe for the last 15 mins only. So the question begs... Who is the most suitable midfielder we should acquire? We need at least 2 new central midfielders....

It doesn't really bother me that Andersons fitness is in question. Unless you mean his injury record and genuine time out of the game. The minutes theory was debunked and to me even if he can play 50/60mins as a midfielder and we change it up it's fine as long as we're bringing natural players onto the field rather than shoehorns like Giggs and Jones. He can always come on for 30mins as well and influence with his technical ability. It's his balance with the other midfielders that has been a bit all over the shop. Carrick is not a direct run and gun defensive midfielder and that instantly puts him in the 'not quite a DM to keep it tight and not quite a pure AM' category but he certainly is good enough to link play when needed and definitely worthy of the spot. The defensive load for me still needs to be taken away from him.

I just think that technical 1 on 1 aspect is missing when the balance is out in deep midfield which means Carrick gets isolated and defensive load increases inviting more pressure onto the back four which means wingers come deeper and have to hit lower% balls to create scattered and broken play. But when the balance is on like you said with a player similar to Carrick/Fletcher (not a technical minded more advanced player) to me it's the spot that needs fixing the rest will fall into place.

I am totally for signing a player like Strootman :D

Hang on, isn't the running Caf theory that we only wank ourselves silly over foreign players and bemoan British players being bought?

Hopefully the United scouts have been on the blower to Moyes telling him to knock this one on the head, Average vanplodder is going to have to play like a he's mixture of Redondo and Keane to live up to the hype on here.:p

He's not the strongest mate believe me. Watch him play not Youtube.

Aren't you the guy who only just started watching him in this U21 tournament? Oh dear.

My advice is to not even reply to some of the muppets on here from now on, same old story during the transfer market, people spouting massive amounts of sheer shite.

Hopefully can get this deal done, we'll see.

O here we go sorry.. I can't possible know if he's strong or not because those skills like pace are hard to define.. Stupid me!!! What's more annoying is people that can't frigging develop their own opinion on a player.

What's more annoying is people like you that think you're the dogs bollocks and can just go around spouting showers of shit and getting away with it without anybody pulling you up on it.

You was calling him a shit version of Carrick and basically shitting on the guy after watching him for ONE game in an U21 tournament. You tried to tell us all how Dutch Pundits didn't rate him, then moaned when that was brought up as a shite reason to hate on the guy.

But you continue to think your opinion is superior because you've watched him play a couple of games in a young international tournament, rather than people who have been watching the guy for years. Everybody is entitled to their opinions at the end of the day, but when they're as ridiculous as some of the ones in this thread, you're getting called out for them.

Amazingly you even told somebody to stop watching Strootman on youtube, this coming from a guy that's only just started watching him in an U21 tournament and is saying with confidence that he's not strong. Stop embarrassing yourself.

Isn't that exactly what Jake was doing until you told him to "believe" your expert opinion based on a whopping 2 games of u21 footie instead?

Furthermore, how anyone can conclude that he lacks physical strength based on said 2 games, is beyond me.

From watching the video, there are certainly shades of Carrick. However, my concern lies with how we will adapt to the pace of the EPL. He's not going to have so much time on the ball.

You watch him and tell me. I didnt agree with Jake that is allowed. But atleast he had an opinion. I'd rather have a debate on that than someone giving te big who har on sweet nothing but he must be good because United scouts have watched him.. We don't even know if our interest is concrete. Either way i think he's an okay player.

'Showers of shit' i actually like that one Made me chuckle. As far as calling out, I'm not bothered as there nothing wrong with what i said. Thats bloody pundit thing again.. I said something along the lines that pundits have said he was pretty average and the game i watched was pretty average so maybe there might be some truth. Is that really an unthinkable thing to say? I also stated in the game against Russia i thought he played alright.. He didnt look strong and considering he plays in the Dutch league his development in that department may well not be up to the level on of the EPL i which i sugguested if we brought him he would need to hit the gym. When Park came here he was weak as shit too. Seriously some serious PMS on here sometimes.

Do not want, he looks like RvP and Carrick's retarded lovechild, will get way too confusing when all 3 are on the pitch.

But on a serious note, haven't seen much of the fella, but we surely can't be complaining of signing a young CM are we? At least it's a step in the right direction. What I get from that latest youtube video is he looks like he plays a sort of anchor role like Carrick, but tends to push up more. If that's what he plays often then do we really need another player of Carrick's mould? To be fair Carrick is older than 30, and we don't really know how long he can stay at the top for, so perhaps a young players similar to his style (and to an extent his looks) may be a good shout.

Also Jake, how on Earth did you think he looked very good in that vid? He made about 2 good passes, whilst the rest were backwards or sideways.

Was the fact that I have been not clearly enough implied for you?

Strootman is classic United decoy move - we are actually after Thiago. In the end we won't get either and sign another striker / winger.

From that video he looks a good little player. Very Carrick like.

If he's as good as that video suggests, I'd be quite happy if we were to buy two midfielders this summer, and he was one of them.

I don't see what's the problem. I seem to remember him being rated quite higher on here before all of this United speculation regarding Strootman.

First of all if he'd be brought in, I very much doubt he'd partner Carrick very often because 1) I feel as if we're going to sign an attacking midfielder (the muppet in me says Thiago), and 2) he'd more or less be Carrick's "waiting in line" replacement and would be played pretty much every game Carrick's been given a rest.

Carrick's a fantastic player and will still be seeing heavy minutes for a couple of years, but he's not exactly a young player anymore and him being able to stay at this level for another 4-5 years is hardly a given (not gonna happen if you ask me), plus Strootman actualy has a lot of years ahead of him still, he's nowhere near his peek imo and he'd be able to grow into a bigger, more influental player over time...he doesn't have to be in his "best" years right now if he's not necessarily being bought to partner Carrick right now.

I don't know you didnt say in that post. I'm not a mind reader. Take it you believe he is then.

You certainly aren't, nor do you possess a normal persons ability to pick on implications by the looks of things. Why would I specifically disagree with your assessment of him based on his performances in the u21 Euros if I hadn't seen them myself?

You should change your name to the riddler.. I just wanted a straight answer not a scrambled discription of what you ment. But no you didnt disagree with me just questioned what did i know from 2 games.

Louis van Gaal confirmed his captaincy some time ago before matches against Romania and Andorra. He could choose Sneijder for that role but he thought a captain from younger generation will be more suitable for the years to come.

He's rated as a great example for his teams and being prepared for a long term leader role.
