Every time I watch him he's about everywhere, joins in with both defense and attack, sometimes covering for defenders, and other times crossing from the wings. He hounds players more than Carrick does, and doesn't look to dictate play just simply move the ball on.

This window is all about finding a player to do what Fletcher did in 08-09. Like you said hound defenders and deliver the short pass to Carrick to hit a counter-ball.

From that YouTube video it has made me think their is something in it.

The way he sorta smiles at first, then realises it's being recorded and completely shuts up and ignores him.

He either knows it's a bad thing to talk about other clubs, or he has been told to keep quiet.

Good performance yesterday IMO. Ran the game from the middle of the park even if he wasn't as flashy as the Dutch wide men.

He's so Carrick/Martinez like it's frightening. He'd be a solid buy in an area we're desperate for. Sign him up Moyesy!

Looks like a decent player, and definitely a good leader, but can't help thinking he just isn't quite the level of footballer we need. Was very impressed with Spain's midfield yesterday, esp. Illaramendi, Thiago and Isco.

Ah - just you wait until either of the team giants are up against Norway :) Stefan Johansen, Anders Konradsen, Håvard Nordtveit, Jo Inge Berget, Markus Henriksen ... we will destroy the Isco and Thiagos :) Or possibly Strootmans

Norway have a good mature team out there. Could spring a surprise.

It's easy to be impressed by Thiago and Isco as they're classy, flashy players. I prefer Strootman to Illaramendi though. Strootman has more about his game and is better going forward. Illaramendi is probably better when it comes to purely screening the back 4 though.

He is absolutely and completely nothing like Martinez. For a start theres more meat on Martinez than two Strootmans combined

Well I wasn't comparing girth but whatever floats your boat man.

I disagree. There's some striking similarities between the Strootman we're seeing this Summer and the Martinez we saw 2 years ago. Martinez was more impressive though, obviously.

Watched the game and some others of Strootman(however not too many - after we were heavily linked) and I agree with both that he's nothing like Martinez now or 2 years before. Other than they play in the middle of the park I can't see those similarities...

So according to the Youtube experts in this thread he is a cross between Albertini and Martinez then? With a bit of Carrick thrown in for good measure. Alrighty then....

Are we going to sign this lil fecker or not?

This could well be the most underwhelming signing in recent times, he's a nothing player. I don't know what some of you are seeing when you watch him, I'm baffled.

gotta say, I agree...

He's okay, a good prospect for a young midfielder but predictably the comparison made to Gareth Barry was far closer than the one made to Keane

Good passer
Good tackler
Strong
Can shoot

Good in the air
Good positioning

''Most underwhelming sign in recent times'' That's absolutely ridiculous.

Strong? And you found about 4 different ways to say he's a leader

He's not the strongest mate believe me. Watch him play not Youtube.

Spoilt. Seriously. What absolute garbage.

If wanting the best for United means I'm spoilt, then I absolutely and unashamedly am, and I want to be continually spoilt watching great midfielders play for United for years to come. Strootman isn't one.

He's 22 and still qualifies as an U21 for his country, he is vice captain of the senior side and is very highly regarded within that setup.

Surely he might have a chance of becoming a very good, possibly great CM at some point under the right guidance?

The game against Russia was the first I've seen of him. Looked pretty good. Since you've evidently watched him play regularly, what is it about him that you don't rate?

I wonder how you felt when we signed non-great players in the past then. I rate United's opinion much, MUCH higher than your spoilt mentality.

He's not the club captain (van Bommel last season, Toivonen before then) nor the country captain (except at youth level where he's the oldest player and for two games in the past, it's Sneijder or van Persie otherwise), you could say the rest of these things about pretty much everyone including Nigel Reo Coker and it'd be hard to discuss with it.

Strootman is the current captain of PSV. And the Vice Captain of Holland, he captained the side a good few times, and is the youth captain too.

So what we're saying is that jakec probably hasn't really watched him. He's claimed to have watched a few obscure players a 'fair few' times recently, but I always have my doubts about people that claim to watch these shit teams regularly. Nobody's that sad, surely.

Don't condescend me  I've seen him play a fair few times.

Well to be fare the Dutch league isn't the strongest so he probably does brush off a few challenges. Either way I actually said early that he had a decent game against the Russians however he is not a strong player. Would defo need to get on the weights if he came here.
