Keir Starmer Labour Leader

Quite a telling reaction. This guy has been one of Starmer’s biggest cheerleaders. It’s a feck up. It’s such a minor issue to sack someone over that it completely exposes the ulterior motive. In doing so Starmer is inflaming ideological tension and inciting a split with the left. Wherever you stand, that is not conducive to getting Labour into power.

It's not even accurate, it's a conspiracy theory at best. To try to connect the actions that resulted of the death of George Floyd is due to Israeli police training techniques is sly anti-semitism, the death had no relevance to Israel - so why mention it? RLB has had issues when pressed in the past on anti-semitism and her position with Corbyn at Jewish hustings in February. The article isn't the main reason and shouldn't be looked in isolation, i think it's a contribution of a number of issues, and this was the last straw.
It's not a conspiracy, read the Amnesty article.

To be honest I'm more interested in why the supposed party of the UK's working class seems to spend more time talking about a foreign country in the middle east than it does about the needs of its own core supporters. Israel does plenty of things wrong, but so do dozens of other countries around the world. So why is it this constant Israel focus from a party that claims not to harbour anti-semitics?

It's probably related to the fact that today the Labour party decided to focus more on a false accusation of anti-semtism than their opposition who are facing corruption charges.

this was the first excuse not the last straw, the labour party is clearly and willingly purging all aspects of the left in the trot hunt pt.2 and it's going to backfire as it will allow the greens and the lib dems to peel off enough voters that they can't form a majority

I can't really see it backfiring, the labour vote at the last election was it's lowest ever based on Corbyn's policies.

It's too early to say really. Does Starmer think it's something he had to do and he's told her he'll bring her back in the shadow cabinet in a year or two's time, or has he seized upon an opportune excuse to purge a leftie, with more such actions to come? I don't know, hopefully the latter, but we'll see.

I'm bored shitless by the actual issue, which is no doubt wrong and disgraceful and everything, but I'm just being honest, I am.

we're not going to have another 2019 election, labour and conservative voters fecking hate "their party" atm, both parties will get fewer votes, the important thing will be which loses the fewest.

I wonder if he didn't really want RLB in the Shadow Cabinet in the first place.

Whilst you're there, could you pick 6 numbers between 1-59 please?

They didn't link the action they linked the technique and if there's been training from any countries secret service on said technique then it's relevant.

If your objection is that it's anti-semetic to mention israel that's poor but it's probably fairly accurate of the state of things to be fair.

Please don't hold your breath. You're expecting a lot of forward thinking from a guy who hates the idea of being called Sir so much that he accepted the title.

in any case, being critical of the Israeli secret service isn't anti semetic in the slightest.

That isn’t the issue though. It’s linking the death of George Floyd, who was murdered by US Police, to Israel. I’m surprised Keir sacked RLB but in reality he had little other choice.

Also have to question RLB’s intelligence. After reading that article she should have stayed well away from it. The fact she didn’t is telling.

So no further word on the treatment of black & brown Labour MPs from within the Party, that was leaked months ago?

sure, it's an inaccuracy, but it's still a massive overreaction to sack someone for simply retweeting an article in a national newspaper which has one dubious line in it (at best).

Didn't she applaud Maxine Peake too?

a retweeted article about police which has one, sourced, line about training means they are "spending more time talking about a foreign country in the middle east than it does about the needs of its own core supporters"

I think if you read the article it's certainly implying a theory that there is a connection between a death from the police, and Israel influencing that death. This decision, hasn't been made on just this article alone clearly. This was simply enough to give cause and to clear out.

As some said, she's no real loss as a front bench politician.
So you can't criticise Israel in any way shape or form without being antisemitic? They can do what ever they want without any other country being able to hold them accountable for their actions?

I'm hoping he'll enrage you even further Dobs, right up to axe-murdering rampage I'm leaving the party level. I doubt he will but I live in hope.

No he isn't. He went out to bat for Daniel Finkelstein when his involvement in the out and out racist Gatestone Institute came out, on the basis that he was a ruddy nice bloke, actually.

Does that mean you disagree with what he writes here?

Exactly. Israel isn't even the main point of that article. More irritating to Starmer was surely the "if you didn't vote Corbyn you voted Tory" line which he won't come out and say for obvious reasons.

@Kentonio you were defending the nancy astor stuff as just an expression of the bigotry at the time. firstly, no, she was way out of line with her own time:

Americans rarely agree as overwhelmingly as they did in November 1938. Just two weeks after Nazi Germany coordinated a brutal nationwide attack against Jews within its own borders -- an event known as "Kristallnacht" -- Gallup asked Americans: "Do you approve or disapprove of the Nazi treatment of Jews in Germany?" Nearly everyone who responded -- 94% -- indicated that they disapproved.

secondly, this degrees of anti-semitism game which indicts literally the whole world but is only deployed against the labour left would implicate everyone involved in that statue in a much more direct way than RLB, who retweeted an article with a sourced link about police training.

Are you looking at this in absolutes? I said, they're linking the death of George Floyd to Israel. The relevance of Israel linked to his death is not proven, so why would Maxine Peake bring this into a discussion?

I don't think i've ever said Israel is beyond criticism (feel free to prove me wrong here), but i fail to see the relevance of bringing Israel into a discussion on George Floyds death in another country, it's comparable to saying China are responsible for his death as they were the first nation to have some form of law & order. Maxine Peake clearly felt the need to highlight Israel, and her motives are questionable based on her track record.

There's no direct statement on kneeling on someone's neck but there is on over excessive force in situations where people are already restrained. It's poor writing by the article but you can see where it's been taken from.

He makes some good points but he also concedes that the so-called conspiracy could well be plausible. It is well-known that Israeli forces use the restraining technique used on George Floyd.
It is well-known Israeli forces conduct training sessions with US police - and, contrary to Wagner’s apparent ignorance, it took five seconds to discover via Google that this included a seminar with Minneapolis police in 2012.
Now, I fully agree that Peake’s linking the two is problematic in some regards, and the focus in the context of Floyd should be solely the US government. But equally, it would be disingenuous to simply condemn it as an ‘anti-Semitic conspiracy’. And to compel a shadow minister to resign for retweeting it? Rubbish. No one would sack a minister for something so slight unless he wanted to sack her anyway.

It's the technique she was talking about.

“Systemic racism is a global issue,” she adds. “The tactics used by the police in America, kneeling on George Floyd’s neck, that was learnt from seminars with Israeli secret services.” (A spokesperson for the Israeli police has denied this, stating that “there is no tactic or protocol that calls to put pressure on the neck or airway”.)

Genuine bizarre anyone thinks Peaks words were anti Semitic. But well the world is a weird and awful place.

Big decision and the correct one . The more i see of Starmer the more convinced i become that he will be PM and i haven't felt that about a labour leader in years
