Kalidou Koulibaly | Signs new contract.

Seems pretty decent though he always dives in a lot, always wonder how good a defender is if they are diving all over the place. Rio didn't need to do that! Pointless getting excited till we get a new manager anyway, lost count of the amount of players we've signed that are meant to be amazing, "the final piece" and come here and play crap every week.

When is Duncan Castles ever right about things? He called Pogba returning about 3 seasons but since then hasn't got a thing correct. He was harping on about Alex Sandro already agreeing personal terms this summer.

TBF Italian sources pretty much said the same. The problem with Sandro seemed to be the fee. Juventus wanted an X amount of money and United weren't ready to pay the price. Both clubs refused to back down and Sandro remained at Juve

Napoli rejected a 100 million Euro bid from us over the summer for Koulibaly. They are second in the league and are flying under new manager Ancelotti. Why in the name of holy bananas does Castles think Napoli are happy to change their stance mid-season and sell their best player and seriously jeopardize their Champions League qualifying hopes?

Doesn't add up unless it's a smokescreen or unless he is putting 2+2 together to get 5 like Miguel Delaney always does. I still think the Serbian might be our main target behind the scenes that the board feel would be realistic in January.

It's an age thing too though. They are willing to invest big in younger players
Which would be a wise thing to do.

We have been signing and wanting to sign too many old players who declines after we sign or will need a new blood within a couple of years for same positions.

If Napoli get knocked out of Champions League, Juventus pull away at the top of Serie A, Napoli are comfortably top four and Koulibaly pushes for the move when January comes around then we may have a chance.

He was an absolute beast against Liverpool.

That's the only time I've ever seen him play but it was more convincing than any performance I've ever seen our current CB's do.

So fecking what? We're the most valuable club in world football, time we acted like it.

I don't understand this mentality from fans, we either invest our money or let the Glazers leech it. I know which I'd prefer.

fecking Liverpool spent £75m on a CB. We have hardly spent more than what Rio cost on a single CB since we bought him from Leeds ffs.
Thank you for this post. We have to start paying big bucks for quality or risk getting forgotten in midtable.

Koulibaly partnering Smalling? FFS!
Think Koulibaly seemed a bit like Bailly although more well-rounded. You don't think this guy is better than Bailly or not good enough to work with Smalling?

It's not the fans mentality. It's Ed's mentality. He said he's willing to spend 100m on someone like Varane, so it depends if the player is marketable enough for him to splash the cash or not.

I see it a lot from fans on here as well to be fair. It's like the mentality has carried on from when we were the best with nearly a full team of world class or close to players. Now we're behind and people want us to work with what we have. I get that we can get more out of some of them, absolutely, but we need to improve the quality as well. Hopefully Ed sees that though, like you say.

This is the only scenario i think it could happen. And it would still be very expensive. It's not gonna happen, not this winter. And i dont believe next summer either, he still have almost five years contract left. Ok, Napoli maybe could ready to cash at some point and player maybe could be ready to sign his last BIG contract. So i say in summer 2019 or summer 2020 there is a chance. But not on january when Napoli is second on the league.

I don't know what game Castles is playing. Big clubs have been trying to buy Koulibaly for a while, but it never comes close to happening because De Laurentiis is so hard to deal with due to being clinically insane. It sure as hell isn't going to happen in January, unless the Glazers are willing to spend a ridiculous amount of money for a central defender with little to no marketing potential. I'd believe the ridiculous stories about the Saudis buying the club before I'd believe that.

Napoli I read claimed they turned down a 90 million pound/euro (not sure currency) bid for him in the summer.

So I’ve only seen him play a few times and I’ve never really been blown away so anyone watch him regularly? Comparison level compared to say VVDJK?

Miles ahead of VDK, you can watch in Liverpool vs Napoli, Liverpool couldn't manage shot on target against Napoli who play attacking football.

He's got it all, power, pace, mobility, aerial prowess and he's good on the ball, dealing with Napoli's looney President will be very difficult though.

I don't think any club is going to spend 100 million on a CB anytime soon unless they're getting a prime Rio/Vidic/Terry type defender. So, like other clubs have done, we'll have to look at either a bargain or shell out 70 million or so.

Get Bailly back to his beast mode self, stick him next to Koulibaly and we're all set. Smalling will always be Smalling.

If you think he'll work with Bailly then he'll work with Smalling. Nevermind, as i thought you were saying Koulibaly wasn't any good.

Very solid (left) CB, defensively sound, quick, decent on the ball and is good in the air (although he's closer to 1.87m not 1.95m that Google has up).

However, he just signed a new contract and Napoli are notorious for asking for ridiculous fees for their players. He won't be sold for less than £75m in the winter imo and I just can't see Woodward signing off on this deal given our troubles signing a CB last summer.

If we don't sign him for 75 mil, we are jokers. VVD cost Pool the same amount and they both are currently of same age (VVD is some 3 weeks younger). Anyways, I think Napoli will ask for around 100 mil

We were crap that match but VVD is more complete than Koulibaly. ( And also a better player)

So which one is it? Is he 6”2 or 6”5?

He's 6'3. Also for his height he's pretty mediocre in the air. He'd work very well with Smalling and give you much better distribution from the back.

What things do VVD offer better than Koulibaly?

Have you seen him play a few times? Reason I was asking earlier how they compare is because right now out of the CB’s I’ve seen and that isn’t everyone I’d have to say VVDJK is probably the best CB in the world for me. So wasn’t sure if I could trust my fellow United fans opinions on this when they say things like he Koulibaly is miles above the level of VVDJK. If that were so you’d imagine there would be much more made of him and when I’ve seen him I’ve not been overly blown away and he seems to spend a lot of time sliding about which for me personally is the sign of a bad defender.

I don’t think United will pull the trigger on this and I don’t see any scenario where they would let him go and especially not in January.

VVDJK? Who's that, and what's going on? Acronyms gone mad!

It seem just you, we all have opinions but if it comes to VVD and Koulibaly, most people would prefer Koulibaly. Every time I watch him, he's a monster and impressive.

It seems just me what?

I had seen him previously Koulibaly, what was it 4/5 years now when he was linked with us previously and I’ve seen him a few times since then and last season, not regularly as I say and although I can see he is decent I’ve never watched him and been blown away or thought he is incredible. However like I said not a regular watcher of him so maybe I just caught him having some average games.

Cant see him joining us. Napoli would not sell in Jan and I bet Kaboulibly can do much better than us, probably end up at Real or something.

Could end up with Sarri at Chelsea if they don't see Christensen being part of their plans. Might involve some kind of swap deal maybe?!
