Jurgen Klopp and Dortmund

Looks like a really good signing.

He has great finishing skills, seems relatively two-footed, decent pace, can score from outside the box, moves well off the ball, young...

Klopp has promised Lewandowski to help him to become the top scorer in the Bundesliga (he is leading with 18 goals together with Mandzukic). Klopp said Lewandowski is fighting for that trophy and if there's a pen in the remaining game he can take it. Classy as usual!

Things with Dortmund's interest in Immobile are getting serious. Watzke has confirmed that Immobile is desperate for a move to Borussia Dortmund and BILD are reporting that Zorc and Watzke have been in Italy trying to strike a deal with Juventus and Torino. Seems like it's only a matter of time before the transfer is confirmed.

Immobile is really tearing it up in the Serie A this season. The problem is, he is co-owned by Torino and Juventus and while Torino are unlikely to refuse to sell, Juventus' plans for him are still unknown. I think Dortmund will get him though, especially if the stories about Immobile wanting to move are true. If Juve agree to sell, they'll receive a nice profit from a player that wasn't even in their squad this year, albeit a really talented one. At least they'd be left with Domenico Berardi. Dortmund have been linked with Lukaku, Wilfried Bony and Jo (the former City striker) so they surely would have a back up plan if Immobile's transfer collapses.

Ginter is a great talent who's already in Germany's provisional squad for the World Cup. Even if he doesn't make it to Brazil, it's still nice recognition for him at such an young age. He's already good enough for the Bundesliga but will surely only get better. He'd be a brilliant back up for Hummels and Subotic and I'm sure Klopp would integrate him slowly and carefully into the first team instead of rushing him. His ability to play in midfield would be a big, big bonus as well. I'd guess that he'd occupy Friedrich's place in the squad?

Ramos is a good signing - a well established Bundesliga striker. He can't directly replace Lewandowski's overall contributions to Dortmund's play nor his goals but him and potentially Immobile would be a good fix by Dortmund considering the delicate situation. Seems like Ji could be loaned out next season, especially if Dortmund decide to get Roberto Firmino from Hoffenheim. Augsburg have been good for him and have given him a chance so it wouldn't be the worst case scenario if he spends some time away from Dortmund for invaluable playing time (similar to Leitner but maybe not a two-season loan this time).

Speaking of Leitner - is he doing well at Stuttgart?
Leitner was not doing particularly well to put it nicely ...

According to an interview from last summer, Klopp's idea for the current, almost expired season has been already to reduce our dependence on Lewandowski's goals. That's one of the reasons why he brought in lads like Mkhitaryan (who scored immensely in the Ukranian league) and Aubameyang (top scorer of French league after Ibrahimovic).

If you look at the current numbers, despite Mkhitaryans bumpy phases and Aubame not playing regularly, Klopp's plan worked out: Don't have exact numbers handy but roughly, Lewandowski scored one third of our goals last season and 'only' 25% so far this season. Adding up the goals by all four newcomers of this season - Aubame, Mkhitaryan, Sokratis, Jojic (January 2014 arrival), they've scored already 30% of our goals, and neither Aubame nor Jojic were fielded full times.

The Ji-to-Augsburg loan is kinda rejected by a serious journo for the summer (potentially in winter?), and another rather trustworthy source said that Firmino is not the 'pure' striker Klopp is after.

If Immobile actually joins us, I'm very calm about our first Lewandowski-free season. :) I expect Schieber to leave as Klopp mentioned a couple of weeks back that Ducksch, our young lad from the BVB academy, won't be loaned out - and four strikers would be too many.

ETA: Forgot your question about Ginter.

I think you're right and he'll take Friedrich's spot; however, I would expect Klopp to use him also in DM (no. 6) as you've already mentioned:
First of all, that's his 'original' position (as far as I recall, Streich turned him into a CB).
Secondly, that's where we could have some demand in the future as well: Kehl and Sven Bender are rather often injured, and thus far it's unclear if Oliver Kehl will stay (though the latter seems to be more of a no.8 than a no.6).
Last but not least, Marian Sarr is expected to become the new Mats Hummels, and while he's struggling a bit this season, I'm quite sure Klopp wouldn't want to shut the door for him.

Feels good to get your business done early and watch the ensuing chaos in the transfer market, doesn't it?

All of them are great buys, hopefully the Ginter/Immobile deals go through.
Can't wait for more stuff from you guys, Cahanoglu today was fun to hear. :D Surely you'll be linked with a number of world class mates!

If you guys get Ginter,Immobile,Ramos and Firminho the gap to us is closed by some distance. What a team!
Apparently, Firmino was a lead to nowhere, but I expect Mkhitaryan to get more clinical - as he's been in previous years - and Aubame to even do better than this year. 13 BL goals (17 across all competitions IIRC) are not too bad for a part time AM coming from a foreign league.

Shame. He deserves a place at a big club. Can you see another big transfer besides Ciro? A new winger for the right perhaps?

I may be wrong but don't expect another one.

First of all, Watzke repeated (in last Sunday's Doppelpass) something Klopp mentioned last summer several times: You need to have competition in your squad but at the same time all players need to have a realistic perspective for field time. That's why I reckon that with Immobile and Ginter to be confirmed, our 'incoming' business will be done.

If you look at our current squad, we have Kuba, Aubameyang, Hofmann (as a 'newbie'), Jojic, and Ji; Kevin & Marco can play RAM, too, though they are mostly played as LAM (or centrally as Marco recently).

Re: Jojic: When he joined us, it became apparent that he's primarily foreseen for a Gündogan successor role but that his versatility to play in attacking midfield was another reason. I'm very eager to see Klopp's plans for next season! He had wanted to change it already this season but refrained due to our massive injury crisis.

I'm sure Immobile would be great for Dortmund and Juventus would regret letting him go despite his apparent desire to join BVB. As for Schieber, he's just not Dortmund class, to put it mildly. He should leave for some midtable Bundesliga side for the sake of his career and it would be great if Dortmund could get some decent fee for him.

I can't see us making many signings, although Lewandowski and Rode are already complete. Not complaining! Only transfer I feel we would make is a CB, though which one I haven't the slightest idea.

I've been reading that Juventus are interested in Sanchez from Barca, so perhaps that is why they want to sell Immobile. Help raise some funds for the Chilean.

I'd be really disappointed if Lewandowski and Rode were the only ones after your Director of Finance (?) stated that whoever Pep's wish is, he's ready to splash the cash.

Don't you think Pep would like to have another midfielder as well as a CB?

I think we have one too many midfielders :D It all depends on how does Pep envisage the team playing though. If he sees Lahm at DM then that means we need to get another RB. A CB is a must though as we don't know just how much those injuries have affected Badstuber.

Yeah, Firmino won´t come. We have no space left in the attacking midfield and won´t add another 15 Mil. € to the investments in the Summer.

If we go by the current status of strong rumors and fixed transfers:

In:
Immobile (ca. 20 Mil. €)
Ginter (ca. 10 Mil. €)
Ramos (9 Mil. €)
Sahin (7 Mil. €)
Ji (free)

Out:
Lewandowski (free)
Schieber (2-3 Mil. €)
Friedrich (free)

That results in a direct investment in the area of 45 Mil. €, which is massive for us.

The 26 man strong squad would then look like this:

GK: Weidenfeller, Langerak
LB: Schmelzer, Durm (can also play RB)
CB: Hummels, Sokratis, Subotic, Sarr
RB: Piszczek, Großkreutz (can also play LB,DM,LW)
DM: Bender, Kehl, Ginter (can also play CB)
CM: Gündogan (can also play CAM), Sahin, Jojic (can also play CAM), Kirch
LAM: Reus (can also play CAM and RAM), Aubameyang (can also play RAM)
CAM: Mkhitaryan (can also play RAM and LAM), Ji
RAM: Kuba, Hofmann
CF: Immobile, Ramos, Ducksch

The bold ones would be my regulars as of now, although there could easily be changes depending on the World Cup and Pre season. Weidenfeller, Hummels, Piszczek, Bender, Reus and Mkhitaryan are the only ones, who I would consider safe starter if nothing drastic happens until then. LB, 2nd CB, CM, 3rd AM and CF would be the most competive positions.

Thats one hell of a squad. The strongest we would have since the 90ies. Strong enough to challenge in the three major competitions. Maybe even too big in the offensive midfield, which is why I could see Hofmann and/or Ji going on loan moves. One thing that is noticable is, that there is a clear focus on versatility to ensure enough playing time for most players depending on form. Half the squad can play at least a second position on a good level, quite a few even more.

It is without a doubt impressive, how Dortmund´s head officials (Watzke, Zorc, Klopp) managed to gradually strengthen the squad with relative little money (this Summer will be our first real spending tour in the era Klopp) despite losing key players every season since 2011.

Another point is, that we are not only growing in terms of personell, but also tactically. In the two league winning seasons, we were quite rigid in keeping the 4-2-3-1 formation, which I still consider our main formation for the next season. Learing our lesson in the CL, we added the more compact and defensive 4-3-3 to our repertoir in big games in 2012/2013. In this season Klopp began to adapt even further by trying out the most offensive formation to date in 4-1-4-1, which I could see in the next season vs. very defensive opponents.

Not only our squad strength and financial muscle is growing, but Klopp aswell.

Ginter and Immobile are easy to pronounce though. Klopp, what are you doing? :(

I'd like to give Klopp even more credit for his development as he did so despite our injury crisis: He needed to come up with something entirely different from his planned axis of Mkhitaryan - Ilkay - no. 6 - Mats/Neven(Sokratis).

If anybody had told me last summer that we'd be the best of the rest, are in the DFB Cup final, and almost knocked out Real Madrid in the QFs without a complete season of Gündogan at our services*, I'd have asked the person if the stuff he's inhaling is legally available!

* during his 56 minutes against Augsburg he was rather poor, and he didn't convince me in the 1st round of DFB cup either

He has done an excellent job in dealing with the injuries this season, I honestly did not expect it. I can't wait for next year already, hopefully both us and you lot manage to stay away from injuries and I feel we are going to have a superb season.

@Raul Madrid I do want to make a joke, but I feel I'm still new around here and don't want to get on the bad side of the caf just yet!

It is not just Gündogan either. We are playing without at least 5 regular starters in every game since freaking November. Subotic, Schmelzer, Piszczek, Bender, Gündogan, Kuba and Hummels all were out for at least 3 months throughout the season. Add to that injuries from Reus, Mkhitaryan, Sarr and Kehl, which lasted at least a month.

Under any circumstances, 2nd in the league, finalist in the German Cup and QF CL will always be a really good or great result for us, but taking this injury crisis into account? Nothing else but a fantastic season. And like I said, the squad will become even better. An injury crisis like this season is unlikely to occur again next season, but even if it does we will be even better equiped for that.

I still have a hard time believing, that we reach the brual consistency Bayern showed for most of this season. We did keep up with them until November, when our complete defensive formation was ripped apart by injuries, so who knows? I´m confident, that we will give them a harder challenge next year, though.

Even as a Bayernfan and short after stupid comments regarding our Sammer I have to say that he is on the level of Pep and Mou. What he did at Dortmund since 2008 has to be up there with the greatest impacts a coach ever had.
Even "invented" his own playing style: Gegenpressing. Even Sir Alex lacks that.
Speaking of: could he stand with Dortmund for 20 years? Who knows. But I would watch that.

@Sphaero
I didn't mean to play down our many other injured players; the reason for me mentioning Gündogan only was because IMO, his loss impacted Klopp's plans the most, i.e. it didn't give Mkhitaryan the option to fit in as he, Klopp, had foreseen him.

Nuri has been doing a great job - he's BTW the only Dortmund player who actually played all Bundesliga matches (not even Kevin & Lewa accomplished this) - but he has totally different skills as compared to Ilkay. With no other box-to-box player in our squad, Klopp needed to come up with different match plans.

I'm fully with you that the season has been fantastic considering that we had been without our whole CL final defense line for many matches, i.e. the important ones against Bayern and Leverkusen, Manni Bender or Kehli out for many weeks as well. And during these most difficult times, the final CL group match in Marseille: Sarr's debut in our 1st team (in a CL match!), Nuri's injured ankle wrapped in what he called a "Beton-Tape" (=tape out of concrete), many missed big chances - and just moments before the final whistle, Kevin's goal ... goose bumps! :)

We're undoubtedly the drama queen of European football  , and even if we miss to win the DFB Cup: I take my hats off for what Klopp & his team have achieved this season.

Klopp's explanation for buying Ramos: a striker who's 100% committed to Gegenpressing, (very) good finishing, technical and heading abilities, fast.

For those interested in Klopp & are not afraid to test their German skills :D:
There's a 45 min documentary about him on German TV channel WDR this Friday (20.15 CET). I assume it's the one that was broadcasted 1-2 years ago, potentially peppered up with some more recent sound bites. Klopp's Mum shares some stories from Jürgen's youth, and even for Germans it can be hard to understand her strong Swabian dialect without subtitles. ;)

The documentary should be available for about 5-6 days via this website (click on "Sendung verpasst?"): http://www1.wdr.de/fernsehen/dokume...gen/DieBestenImWestenJuergenKlopp-neu100.html

Some stats bits and pieces on Ramos and Immobile in comparison to Lewandowski; will be interesting to see how Ramos and Immobile do once they play with BVB players behind them.

Radar-Immobile-Lewandowski-Ramos-e1401730061344.png

  • Whoscored.com graphic covering some stats (but omitting other intersting ones) for Lewandowski, Immobile, and Ramos:
1307.jpg

  • Some per 90-minute goal stats in Bundesliga and Serie A, respectively (calculated based on appearance in the league by http://www.transfermarkt.de)
    • Lewandowski: 0.64 goals/90 min; 0.52 non-penalty goals/90 min
    • Immobile: 0.77 goals/90 min (no penalties)
    • Ramos: 0.54 goals/90 min; 0.44 non-penalty goals/90 min

I expect us to miss Lewandowski most in the CL matches; we've been doing good in the league by mitigating the dependancy on Robert's goals last season already a bit to Aubameyang and Mkhitaryan.

newly-acquired matthias ginter with a promising display as a deep-lying playmaker of sorts in yesterday's test match against waldhof mannheim. i found him rather impressive and quick as thought..

A CB that can play CDM and CM, and he's quite good in all of those positions. Well, according to FM anyway.

Ginter is very talented, but has to improve a lot under Klopp's guidance, because his last season at Freiburg wasn't particularly good.

I read somewhere that one stat Dortmund put an emphasis on, is: How much space does the attacker need to control the ball when he is the target of a good hard pass. Lewa was top of all European strikers for that, Ramos is about 50% weaker in that discipline. I imagine Immobile also excelled there.

..man, who said Football was a simple game :)

Just got to me;
if Dortmund sign Kagawa for 10 million they would have spend near to 110 million euros in 2013 and 2014.
Yeah, the Götze transfer helped big there but still.
They really go their way. Impressive.

dortmund's fiercest (virtual) first XI in full attack mode:

- - - - - - - - weidenfeller - - - - - - - -
piszczek - sokratis - hummels - durm
- - - - - gündogan - - - - sahin - - - - -
- - reus - - kagawa - - mkhitaryan - -
- - - - - - - - - - ramos - - - - - - - - - -

dortmund's second XI would still be a top6 contender of sorts:

- - - - - - - - - - langerak - - - - - - - - - -
großkreutz - subotic - ginter - schmelzer
- - - kirch - - - bender/kehl - - - jojic - - -
- - kuba - - immobile - - aubameyang - -

their squad is deep as f*ck this season. let's see how it'll work out. there's still a limit of 3 substitutions per match, and only so few seats on the bench..

still they have no play-making DM at hand, and that's for the time being. gündogan has just had his first actual team training session in ages, while sahin and kirch will both be out for several weeks, at least. also, their regular RBs durm and piszczek are both in some kind of slump. which is kind of a pity really, as a (now probable) 4-2-3-1 formation without actual wingers (neither reus, mkhitaryan nor kagawa) would rely heavily on interacting with highly advanced RBs..

So it will be Giggs who will overtake from LVG in three years? pleas be it Ole if not JK:cool:

WHOA!

gündogan did indeed take part in an internal test match. a real match of football!

also, blaszczykowski and schmelzer are back on the pitch. especially the return of schmelzer is a good thing, as durm has been in some kind of slump recently.
