Julian Weigl | Mail Online Sport - "Next On List After Matic & Dier"(Out Injured Until September)

More like Busquets, I'd say. The Utd player closest to him is Carrick.

Lofty expectations right there. Busquets held the base of a great Barcelona side for probably a decade now while Carrick is the most underrated English midfielder ever.

Haven't really watched him much though; can anyone give a good description of his playing style?

This was an answer to a question regarding his playing style, not his overall quality or ceiling. Although I think he does have the potential to become a world class player, but that wasn't the point there.

For those asking, he is still injured. According to transfermarkt, return date is set to 18.09.2017.

P.S. - Could some mod fix the name in the title, pretty please?

I can see why it would be offputting, buying a player with a fairly (but not massively) serious injury who wont be back until mid September. And then rehabilitation, no pre season etc etc. So unlikely. But not absolutely impossible, surely? Unlikely to be serious complications coming back from that (wasnt a ghastly break like Shaw's?) Described yesterday as a Carrick - Busquets hybrid. If that is even close to being true, isnt there an argument to just get him signed up? We have enough midfielders to get started with the season, we can wait until late October for him to come in, could be up and running by Christmas.

I know it wont happen but seems like a shame to miss out on the right player because of temporary circumstances.

What's his injury record like more generally?

@Adebesi Is there a credible source to this?

I do not follow German football that much hence the question @Synco. If he is as good as you say he is, always a welcome addition to the Reds.

Sorry mate, a source for what? About his injury?

Either way Im not the guy to ask, I come into these threads to learn about these guys from people who watch them, not to offer any insight myself as I dont watch any European football at all to speak of. So no, I cant confirm he's good or even how he plays, but @VorZakone and Synco were comparing him to Carrick and Busquets yesterday. His ankle injury is a matter of record.

Given his injury maybe Fabinho is a better option but if that isnt going to happen for whatever reason I wouldnt be adverse to this. I mean, if Athletico are looking to buy Costa for use in January, I dont see why we have to absolutely rule out a player with a fairly routine injury who will be back a few months into the season.

Again, you have misunderstood my post. It wasn't about how good he is, but about his playing style. The user I quoted asked if his style is similar to Kroos, and I answered that he's more similar to Busquets imo (or at Utd: Carrick).

He is highly talented though, and he's widely expected to become a world class player if he fulfills his potential.

Get you now @Synco. Thanks for the explanation. :)

The DM role would be perfect for him then, breaking up play with clever positional sense and instigating fast counter attacks with passes that break the lines. German to boot, they are efficient with their passing!

@Adebesi, we did see Man City do that with Gundogan last year; really shouldn't averse to signing him up considering the potential benefits. A broken ankle can heal completely and not make that serious an impact on a career, I believe.

Gundogan maybe isnt the most fortuitous example given he was out for a lot of the season, that was why I was asking about his longer term injury record. I think Gundogan has had a lot of issues over the years so it was always a risk. Wiegl doesnt look like he has had many issues before this one so hopefully this doesnt trigger more recurring problems.

Anyway this is all academic, I have a feeling Mourinho isnt in the market for 21 year olds, if we arent going for Fabinho I suspect its because he wants someone more experienced so, combined with the injury thing, I doubt this is on his radar at all.

No, the stats paint a fairly damning picture. Absolutely no idea how they equate to myth. Ah, I see we have reached the 'if you don't agree with me, you don't understand football' spiel. Fantastic
Maybe in the fantasy land you exist clearly exist in. The statistics paint no such picture and if they were to be provided here you'd be suitably embarrassed.

Anyhow, there's a reason Chelsea fans actively want rid and a reason why Conte wants to upgrade. Those reasons certainly aren't positive reasons, that's for sure. Each to their own and all that lark but I, for one, hope we steer as clear from Matic as humanely possible.
Fair enough. Just quit with the bullshit Matic was poor last season.

According to the media he is 3rd on the list as our potential DM signing. It looks like Matic and Dier are not gonna be sold by their clubs so he becomes our no1 target now?

Also what is the likelihood of Dortmund willing to do a deal for him this summer?

If he's injured and not likely to recover before the end of the window, I think we're unlikely to touch him.

Have there been any more news? Or are you still talking about the Thursday's article?

I don't think that should stop us if Mourinho sees him as a future star. Might be the easiest time to get him.

If he's started running again might he be fit enough to pass a medal? Presumably this is a very different thing to going back into a full match situation, recovering from a broken ankle.

By all accounts it's not a career changing injury in any way, and he's only out for the first month of the season.

Very unlikely.

0%, which makes all this discussion about Weigl´s injury and how it might affect a deal senseless. It was not his injury that took him off the market but him signing a new four year and a half year contract last winter.

Selling Julian Weigl this Summer would break with Borussia Dortmund´s whole transfer policy concerning key players in nearly a decade. Never have we sold that shortly after extending a contract in that timeframe. Infact, since becoming financially healthy again we have only sold top players when it came to the decision between getting a transfer fee or letting them go as free agents.

Aubameyang might break that philosophy for the first time this Summer (atlhough it is looking more and more likely that he will also stay as his package of fee and wages is simply too expensive for clubs who might need him), but his case is due to his age and play style (high reliance on physical pace) vastly different as this Summer is probably the point in time when we would get the most financially out of a deal. Weigl on the other end has not hit his ceiling yet and is very likely to only rise his value on the market. Weigl is also probably harder to replace as his profile as balancing anchor player is hard to find on the market.

Selling Weigl would make literally no sense from Dortmund´s perspective and would btw also be highly unwise from Weigl´s own perspective. This is also why not even the biggest tabloids in Germany are running this rumour.

Who do you see Dortmund replacing Aubameyang if indeed he moves? Also why do you think literally no big club in England is moving for him??

TuttoMercatoWeb - Julian Weigl is considering leaving (United keeping tabs)

Dier would make sense if we are looking for a Carrick replacement otherwise it doesn't make sense that we replace every English player with a foreign one. At some point we will need some British lads in the team to meet the homegrown quota

Dier doesnt count as homegrown.

Lukaku qualifies as homegrown.

I think Jose was in for Dier at one point and perhaps even tabled a bid (not confirmed) but Levy pulled a Levy and likely priced him out of the market.

Don't know much about this Weigl lad, hoping the resident German fans could enlighten us to his qualties.

Very very talented midfielder. In 2/3 years he'll be Real/Barca quality. In fact I can see Barca replacing Busquets with him when Busquets will be on the wrong side of 30.

That's the sort of talent we should be going for rather than the likes of Matic or Dier. But Jose does like power.
