It's odd that people consider Dortmund the pinnacle for a young player these days.
They buy talent and play them, then end up selling them, rinse repeat...
Not saying thats bad for a young lads career, but they're playing in a league were beyond Bayern, they've mostly been able to have a freeish run at second.

United are up their with Dortmund when it comes to giving youth a chance, especially from our own academy, so I find it intriguing how people paint Dortmund as the pinnacle

Don’t get me started on this. A club with 80,000 fans every week and zero ambition. Absolutely worshipped in some quarters. It’s ridiculous.

Depending on where you read, we could sign this kid for anything between £30m - £50m.

He's 16 years old, so many other 'wonder kids' in the past end up fizzling out with the weight of expectation. At £30m you could maybe justify a gamble but anything around £50m would be mental.

Based on the fee alone he seems like a Wayne Rooney level talent. Great business if we pull it off, also a big feck you to Dortmund.

It'll be staggered over a number of years, whether that be £30m or £50m. And if the club believe he will reach a world class level then it's worth it.

I don’t get the idea that we loan him back to Birmingham. Championship football is a decent level and he’s very comfortable with that. Surely he needs to step up to continue his rapid progress and getting 10-12 starts with us next season in the cups and odd PL fixtures will be best for him. Chelsea wouldn’t dream of loaning that Gilmour lad out, nor City with Foden and if this kid is as good as they say he needs to be valued and nurtured in the same way.
Gilmour is 2 years older, to be fair. Bellingham is ridiculously young. He’s born in 2003, ffs!

Is he a Birmingham fan? Could be awkward having him and Grealish sharing a dressing room next season :smirk:

They're a stepping stone club which has over the years bought players at a young age to sell them on for profit. Michael Zorc has said in interviews that they don't have the financial muscle of a club like Man Utd and operate to buy young players, develop them as first team players and pave the way for them to join a elite level club later. RB Leipzig operate in a similar fashion. It's very easy to see why it would be beneficial for a young player to join Dortmund.

I like the looks of that for the future.

Anyone regularly watch him? What he done to justify the hefty fee?

Just curious is all.

Regarding the Dortmund links. People maybe forget the impact going to Dortmund would have on family life. The kid is still 16 he won’t want to go on his own nor will his parents want to leave him.

United makes much more sense and is much less of a life upheaval for the family. Money is important clearly but not everything

Basic economics. Absolute advantage. You are correct. If release clauses are not involved, Manchester United is the decision that makes the most sense. We also don't spend that amount on a kid to make him sit it out on the bench.

I recall the big guns coming out for Eden Hazard's tour of United. I await the outcome of this, but it seems we really want him.

:wenger:

They simply don't have the money to keep a player once he surpasses a certain market value. Has nothing to do with a lack of ambition.

Hard to believe that Cantona was brought in. Seems like such a random person to pull. Cantona has no current links to the club, not even an ambassador. Sir Alex will be more believable if the club did indeed pulled in an influential figure to help in the persuasion of the kid and his family

Whatever the outcome, it's another positive sign that the club are getting their act together

I think its from a twitter plank who people pretend is ITK.

It will be interesting what we will decide with him. He needs playing time and a loan back would be tge best option. In fact, I think that coukd help us a bit as Birmingham were having problem with balancing the books it seems and were penalised IIRC. Another year on loan in the championship is not bad at all.

There is a big difference in PL and championship. I am positive that he will be loaned back if we get him.

I don't think anyone is saying that or even the young players going there see it as that. Everyone sees Dortmund as a stepping stone and given their recent record a very good stepping stone for big money moves.

I don't really think the fee would indicate anything like that today. Never seen the guy play but today 30 million seems to only buy you good talent, nothing guaranteed.

Rooney was bought for 25.6m GBP, at the time the highest ever payed for a under 20-year old.

At the time the big name signings were going for 30m GBP so if you would take the inflation in the market in to the picture a Rooney like talent you would probably be looking at numbers closer to Sancho.

A 17 year old Rooney would easily go for 100m GBP. For those of us that remember his breakthrough he was a phenomenon from the age og 16-17, I don't think I've ever seen anyone dominate games as much as this guy did at that age. I would put a 17 year old Rooney in the Mbappe category.

In hindsight he didn't live up to his insane level of potential at early age but he had a great career and will go down as one of the United greats.

Is he joining for free? He is 16 years old, so he can sign for free before the summer as long as I remember!

He may have signed a precontract agreement for professional terms upon his 17th. So we would have to go through the courts which would be expensive in itself and will culminate with a compensation package regardless. Doing it up front with Birmingham is quicker and less painful.

If the likes of Sir Alex, Woodward, Judge are all present to meet this kid who is probably doing his GCSEs in a few weeks, then the club must be real fecking serious about trying to secure his signature, and it’s not just a ‘You win some, you lose some’ approach like what seemingly happens when clubs try to secure players that young.

Please no Rooney comparison. The boy was a freak at 16. He took the piss out of us at OT a year before he joined

I don’t remember that....although there was one nice run and shot. I remember Ronaldo taking the piss out of them though. Rooney included.

It's baffling yes, they doing the same thing Monaco did but more successful. Kind of the way Ajax refreshes their team every year. Some owners are just happy to do this because it keeps the money ticking over and as long as they play Champs league they will be able to sustain it. But if they get this formula wrong just 1 time the whole house of cards can come falling down.
