Juan Mata

IF we sell him, it's got to be abroad or back to Spain.

But why sell him? He's still a great player, just perhaps not good enough to start with in the big games. He always chips I. With goals and assists, I say keep him.

Can we really have a player who cost us £38 m, will be on £150 k + p/w, is used to been a starter, and has already been deemed not up the Mourinho system as a squad player? Because that's what he'll have to be if he stays

Added to that if we do keep on spending as we are then we are going to need to get some money back, and in Mata we have someone who might actually fetch a good fee, also worth remembering that next year he'll only have one year left on his contract, which would likely mean selling him for alot less than he's worth now.

I'm not knocking him, and I like him, but he is not a winger, and has never really been trusted in the number 10 position, so for me it's time for him to go.

Supply/demand.

Watford need Deeney yet Mata is, or at least should be, surplus to requirements at OT.

If we get £25m for him i'll gobsmacked.
Just look at Chelsea. They constantly sell players they don't need for a lot of money. Mata (£37m), Felipe Luis (got their money back from Atletico although Luis barely played for a year), Schurrle (£23m) and much more... Why do we always sell our players for like 2x less than their value is? Nani (£4m), van Persie (£4m), Evra (free), Vidic (free) etc etc. Why do we let it happen?

I'm not talking fees, simply him not being good enough for a team with our aspirations.

Read my original post, we got our pants pulled down on the fee, thank you Mr Moyes.

Given the history between him and Mou, he has probably to leave, no point persisting with him.

In terms of personality and behaviour I can't fault the lad but I'm firmly in the Out camp simply because I have felt for a long time he limits our attacks down the right side due to his physical weaknesses. One thing I am glad about is having Mourinho in charge because from what I have seen on the whole he seems to be able to get decent fees for players he doesn't really need, Lukaku, Schurrle, Mata, Filipe Luis and David Luiz especially suggest that.

The fundamental difference is that Everton are demanding top money for a player they want to keep, whereas if Mata leaves it's because United want him off the wage bill. The leverage is all the buyers, rather than the sellers as with Stones.

People always ignore this when moaning about the fees we get for outgoing players.

The one time we sold a player without it being our wish we got a world record fee for him.
You're making a false point here. We sell our players for poor prices not majorly because of anything you put up there. It's simply bad business by us and there's no justification for that. See this post below.

Mata is better than Rooney, Fellaini, Lingard, Carrick.. I would rather they were sold before him. But in Mou we trust.

Players in different stages of their careers and with different levels of demand.

I really hope he goes this summer. Been here for 2.5 seasons and he's been largely underwhelming except for a few games.

He's put up decent stats but the issue with Mata is that unless he's a No.10 there's no point playing him. Even in the No.10 position he lacks the strength, speed and dribbling ability to play in the position for a team with ambitions such as ours.

He's one of a few players in our squad who excuses are made for but the fact is Mata at £37.5m hasn't turned out to be a good signing.

This. Now is the time.

I like Mata, lovely guy, but he's hardly been indispensable for us and he is unlikely to be in Jose's plans. Let him move on.

If Troy Deeney is worth 25 million then I expect us to get at least that for Johnny.

I hope that we'll sell him to Juve or even Wolfsburg, really want him to have a nice career in an important club after us. One of the most likable players in the squad, although his weaknesses will be too exposed under Mou.

Atletico can be another interesting choice for him, Simeone seems to have a gift of getting the best out of the underperforming stars, although he may lack strength to play for them

Mata is gone. He is slow, weak and not mobile enough for a Jose team.

I like him but he needs to be moved on. If Everton want him, sell him.

How much in demand was Mata when Chelsea sold him for £37 million and the difference in the stage of his career compared to now or when they sold Luiz for almost £50 million?
Then we have to consider how much prices have inflated since then. We do bad business; it's that simple. We're not the only big club that does away with players not needed.

So tell me what should be Mata's asking price?

Watford don't want to sell Deeney we might be more willing to sell Mata and actually want the money making our bargaining position weaker.
the only reason why we would be "forced" to sell is Mata's past history with Mourinho. Still he's one of our most creative outlets.
£25mil would be an amazing deal for us, seen as though we practically give away our players usually, barring Ronaldo.
Aye, hopefully with the new deal we would be able to get decent sums from PL teams for our players.

If we sell I'd hope we get more than £25m especially seeing how much players are going for lately. If Watford can turn down 2 bids of around £30m for poorer players we can demand more too.

Rather sell him elsewhere for 10m, than at 20m to Everton.

They'll probably only bid 5m anyway.

Maybe the biggest reason im looking forward to mourinho running the show is to stop us getting our pants pulled down when we sell players .
Mata is a £30m footballer. He won't fit in next season that much is obvious but I trust Jose will ensure we at least get a fair wedge for him.

Everton seems like a weird destination given that Mata's best position is the #10 and that is where Barkley plays. Also, their top earner is Lukaku on 80K per week. Are they really going to bring in Mata on the 140-150K per week that he reportedly earns? They have money but completely upsetting their salary structure just to play Mata or Barkley out of position seems like a bad choice.

I think Mata suits Stoke's style. Surprised they aren't after him.

If Everton want him then make them pay £35m.

Deserve it after Fellaini.

...as he is and would still be one of our most productive players.

Just to clarify, Mata is not very productive at all.
Last season he scored 6 goals + 5 assists. (For comparison, 18 yr old Rashford scored 7 goals in a 33% of appearances as Mata made).
That's embarrassing. Not Falcao/Memphis levels of embarrassing, but pretty bad.
Mata himself would agree that he had a very poor season.

He may make a few nice passes here and there.
He may be a nice guy.
He may even write a nice blog.
But productive on the pitch? I don't think so.

IMO, Mata's level is a team which is around 5th-8th. LVG's MUFC did fit that category. Everton also fit that category. But he just isn't good enough to play for Jose's MUFC.
I think Everton would be his correct level.

It's a shame he's too slow he would be brilliant footballer ...

Actually. Here's a thought.
A slow footballer, with a weak physical build, but buckets of skill on the ball.
In Italy, for a team like Juve, he'd be dynamite and he'll get to compete in the CL.
What do you guys think?

We aren't a 'selling club' (whatever that means) - we extract value from players through playing them and their contributions to our success. We don't sell unless we want to get rid of the players - we got a record fee for Ronaldo - and when we need rid we can't expect high fees. The club seemingly doesn't need the money.

Surprisingly the Glazers haven't thought of monetizing Mata's blog. That alone might cover his big wage.

He won't be sold, Mourinho will give him a chance I think.

Mata is the antithesis of the standard Mourinho player, even before he arrived for his second stint at Chelsea it was made known he didnt rate Mata, he then proceeded to hardly give him a chance despite being Chelsea's POTY the season prior and gladly shipped him out frist thing during the winter window.
So what makes you think he'd suddenly fancy him as a player this time around?

I can see Mata working as a #10 this year, but it depends on what players are in the pipeline to come in.

Same old. Selling way below the market price and people here defending it.

He will not be missed. Probably the player who's been annoying me the most over these last few years. Invisible in almost every game he plays, yet somehow he manages to add an assist or a goal often enough to be concidered as our "most important" attacking-player by most of our fans. £25M is a very good price for him.

If we sell, I really hope he goes to a big(ger) club or CL club. I just feel like a player with his talent and history deserves better. I don't know how stocked these teams are in his position but maybe someone like Juve, Inter or Napoli. In fact, I think he'd tear up the Italian league.

Would keep him to be fair, always puts in a shift for you. Plus he is one of DDG's mates and we want to keep him happy.

Can't keep someone in the club because its the goalkeepers mate.

Mata is good at set pieces and he is a good central player, still I'd rather get rid of Fellaini first.

I actually like Mata, but I also like to see the team winning the League more.

He hasn't even been linked with anyone. Isn't this thread premature?
