Jose's interview - "Wish to sign 2 more players"

If Dalot is really one of the best young right backs in the world then we should be happy that we aren't signing a rb and he will likely get some time to play

Horrible players? You can guarantee that if Liverpool signed any of them, it would spark another caf meltdown about how they're doing everything right and we're doing everything wrong.
For what it's worth, I fully expect us to sign a really top tier player that nobody is expecting. It's too quiet on the transfer front right now, Woodward's up to something.

How the hell is Vidal, Boateng, Willian & Perisic even comparable to the players City & Liverpool have. In willian's position Liverpool have Salah & City have Sane. My lord a gulf in class is observable.

Young has been so solid at Left back. Did people forget how good he was last season and at the world cup?
Jose is also giving Shaw a chance to battle for the LB position. Come on lets not get too negative!

Not fussed about RB as I think Dalot can really impress this season if he gets the chances when back but it's criminal if we don't sign a left back.

Don't panic lads, someone posted in transfer tweets thread that his da told him the Mbappe deal is definitely happening

Keep in mind he might be lying, we are still in the transfer window period, and him coming out and saying we desperately want a full back is only going to strengthen any club looking to sell. If he says he doesnt want one then it helps us negotiate if anything.

No, we would still question why he wasn't targeted for £12m just one year ago.

Because he hadn't proven himself then. Since moving clubs, he has had a very good season and a great world cup. That makes him more of a sure thing than before. Maguire will be a great signing. I personally would like to see Skriniar come in but Maguire would be on that shortlist

Why are people so sure that the RW is Willian? The links with Maguire started a week or so ago, before that he wasn't even close to being linked with us.
We’re after Alderweireld. Was confirmed by the BBC about a month ago.

One of the two players has to be Bale. Jose was filmed telling him so just before kick off at the US friendly with Madrid last season.

So when Jose says what he wants versus what will happen potentially being different, I don't think he means to imply the club won't back him. It's more about whether Bale will finally stop flirting with us and make a firm commitment.

His comments on Pogba are really interesting and enlightening, says a lot about his thoughts on Pogba. Why are we only focusing on a throwaway transfer comment?

Maguire, Rebic and possibly Kovacic too would be my sneaky suspicion if we can get them all once a few are hopefully offloaded first.
Definitely!
We're we'll short in the midfield area. With Pereira and McTomminay far from reaching their potential and needing game time, let's splurge 75m on another promising midfielder who's not reached his potential.

Not signing a left back is utterly negligent. With Valencia and Dalot injured, looks like we’ll be stuck with Darmian for another season.

Fantastic news.
I agree, it is negligence

Valencia's injury isn't serious. He specifically says that they aren't risking Valencia more in this pre-season because Dalot is injured till September. Doesn't even mention Darmian.
Valencia has been nursing and managing injuries for a while now.

Can't watch this at work right now, but found this quote:

'One thing is what I would like, another thing is what is going to happen,' Mourinho admitted when quizzed on his transfer strategy. '[If you had any wish…?] I would get two more players.'

doesn't sound too promising tbh, is this how it went in the interview?

Young is still a decent enough option and there’s still the chance that Shaw can turn things round. The problem is that Dalot won’t play much, and Young and Valencia is a car crash.

A whole lot of people are slamming Luke Shaw here, but I'd like to show some faith in the lad. I believe he'll come good for us. When he plays regularly he tends to be quite good IMO and Young is better than people seem to give him credit for. RW seems the bigger priority to me.

Shaw has had plenty of faith shown and for very little reward. He’s not shown any real potential for a few years now, he’s beyond lucky he’s getting another season with us.

We can sell players after Aug 9 right? So maybe we can keep hold of Darmian until Valencia recovers and sell him in late Aug or something

I like this, I really like this.

Except Sane doesn’t play the same position as Willian.

I think his comment is totally unwarranted and clearly shows that the two of them don't get along at all. Jose is being a miserable twat and I'm worried it's going to be one of those seasons for Jose where he completely loses it.

What are these comments? No one has actually quoted him here yet.

Definitely!

Yeah because McTominay and Pereira are already the Xabi Alonso's of Old Trafford. We still don't have that deep-lying playmaker type in the team you lemon who can control everything hence the endless rumours in reputable source AS today about Jose wanting Kroos. In certain games you need certain midfielders which is why Fergie mixed it up between Hargreaves, Fletcher, Carrick, Park and Scholes depending on who we played.

So according to ESPN Mourinho confirmed that he had two specific names in mind. Maguire and Perisic maybe? That would really get my hopes up. Let’s sell Jones and Martial and buy them

Maguire and William although not “statement” signings are both the kind of signings we have neglected over the years. Maguire has the personality and leadership we so desperately need, and William is a right-midfielder with pace we haven’t had since Valencia’s best days.

Looking at the squad as a whole on paper leaving LB for one more season in favour of more pressing positions (RW for example) is fairly sensible, but it relies so heavily on Shaw coming good that it's a big risk. If we can also get a world class CB or at least one that is a significant upgrade on what we have and maybe offload Rojo, again that would be fairly sensible business.

We're definitely not signing Willian. If they turned down £55m from Barcelona, I wonder what they'll charge us. He'll be 30 at the start of the season it would be terrible business to spend £60m+ on him.

It's most likely Maguire and a RW. I'm still holding hope for Ousmane Dembele because I fail to see why Barca would want Willian or Malcom when they have him.

That is a very good point. I doubt they would be bidding near 60M for a 29-year-old who does not seem to be their type of profile to have him Just as a backup for Dembele and Now a young similar type of player to Dembele. They could be selling Dembele on. If so, then to who?

signing a random list of players wouldn't change that much

Random players won't but I do think out team would be unrecognisable if we had a proper RW, fullbacks who could cross and a centre back and who can defend AND build up play from the back.

Right now we suffer so much because;
  • our defenders tend to circulate the ball amongst themselves or play it long. Our midfielders have to come back to collect the ball from the defence, this put us on the backfoot instantly, or it means we have to challenge for the ball in the air, instead of just having it in our feet.
  • our fullbacks push up but don't cross quickly or accurately. This means play slows down and attacking momentum is lost. It could be argued that we don't have enough players in the box or making runs to bother crossing early or quickly, but if the delivery isn't there - why would you make the runs?
  • 90% of our actual potent attacks come down the left hand side. We make runs in attacking areas on the right, so the stats won't show such imbalance, but really the opposition know the right hand side is weak, it doesn't need to be defended as much. Our best attacking players are all on the left, we build up the most threatening attacks down that side, so the oppo can just focus on defending that side.
Fixing this won't change us into a free flowing attacking side, we'll always be a defence first, counter attacking Mourinho side, but with this fixed, our attack will be more balanced, build up quicker and we'll have less draws. The potential of our players will be released.

2 more players.. interesting!

I suspect it will be Willian & Maguire & maybe one or two more if we start selling a few players before the window!

A summer of Willian, Fred, Maguire & Dalot & Grant.. Probably doesnt look the most glamorous on paper however with Fred and Willian we could strengthen 2 areas where we were weakest last year.

Still think we need a new LB & another striker/impact sub but we cant get them all in.
