Jose Mourinho | Sacked by Roma

He did well to get 81 points and have us finish 2nd, ignoring how our rivals were performing at that time. But it was fecking miserable season and I wanted him sacked that summer because it was obvious to anyone with sense the wheels were going to come off and he was about to Jose all over the place.

This is a thread about Mourinho as Roma manager.

He is doing well with Roma and next season he may be able to challenge for the 4th spot. With Roma's limited resources it is not an easy task.

Are you wumming? The last time Roma spent as much as they did this season was 20+ years ago. How is this doing well? They may finish 3 points better then last season if they win both of the matches.

This is a Manchester United forum. Anyone with past connections to the club will have comments about their time here.

If I am not mistaken Manchester United forum is on the other side. This is the football forum.

Roma spent a boatload this past summer and they're not only going to miss out on top 4, but end in 6th place. Going into the season, that definitely wasn't their target.

Ok. Time for a bit of honesty.
You mentioned City and Liverpool consistently getting 90+ points and that is impressive, even though they both have extremely good squads.
So which is more impressive.
City and Liverpool getting 90+ points.
Or Manchester United under Mourinho getting 81 points (and finishing 2nd) with the squad he had at that time.

Wonder if I will get a response.

The squad he assembled? You mean after breaking the world transfer record, having the highest wage bill in league history, and saying he was ready to go for the title in the summer or 2017, before ending up 19 points behind Pep?

I - like - @roonster09 had to laugh at that "I'll wait for a response line"

And I had an even bigger laugh at you.
You should learn to read the question.
I said 'the squad he had at the time'.
You invented 'the squad he assembled'

Regardless of any spending it was never realistic to *expect* top 4 straight away when the competition is Inter, Milan, Juventus, Napoli and Lazio. That’s five teams.

Next season, though, they need at least 4th for the project to work.

He's a shit manager these days and it brings me joy to see him fail yet again.

No doubt he and his acolytes will claim a Conference League victory as some sort of great achievement though.

This word again.
His acolytes are hiding in catacombs like Christians in Roman time.

Not to mention that Mourinho was announced in April 2021, and after his announcement Roma made a bellow average season ending.

For all the money spent, the xG has decreased, chance creation has also decreased. xGA actually improved, so one thing might balance the other. But yes, for all the investment made, it becomes underwhelming doing almost the same points as last season and actually worst than 2019/20.

But hey, they will win Conference League and say he brought glory back.

Winning Conference League (which would be 1st trophy for Roma since 2008) and finishing 5th in Serie A would be a good season. Their goal for next season would probably be top 4 and going far in Europa League and domestic cup.

Funny that people still mock Mourinho for wanting Perisic at United.

On the hand I bet Perisic thank God every single day he didn't join us. Won league title and cup with Inter and league and Champions League with Bayern. Meanwhile if he had joined us he would have probably spent the rest of his career trophyless and shit.

We don't deserve hard working players like Perisic indeed. Players like Martial and Rashford are the kind of players we deserve to watch every week.

Yes, they expected to jump from finishing 7th with 62 points 16 points away from 4th last season to straight up one of the best 4 teams in the league.

As much as I didn't and don't want Perisic at United because he isn't good enough, I'm still certain he'd have been a better buy than Martial or Sanchez

I have very mixed feelings on Jose but the Perisic transfer was one where i think he was right and the club got it wrong, although i can see why that price was alarming. I won't pretend i've watched him often down the years but whenever i've seen him he looks a talented player who mixes good ability with incredible work rate and who is also aging quite well. A very good player.

Yea people can slate Mourinho as he did get a lot wrong when he was managing us. But Perisic is a very good player and although he would have been crap for us (just as every player is), he definitely wouldn’t have served up the shit we’ve seen from Lingard, Martial, Rashford.

Its even funnier reading it a day after he won Inter Coppa Italia.

i thought he got a little humble. He's still a quote machine.

Perisic has scored fewer goals in the last 3 seasons combined than either Martial or Rashford did in 19/20.

Regardless from the fact that rating wingers by just number of goals scored is a terrible metric, you realize both Martial and Rashford were strikers this season, right?

Martial scored more goals in this 19/20 season than all Eden Hazard seasons at Chelsea. I know which player I will prefer in my team at his prime.

It's not really a fact, is it? I mean the only reason anyone talking today about Perisic is that he scored a couple of goals yesterday. People weren't praising him while having output similar to Daniel James last season or having 0 goals and 1 assist in 8 games of CL this season.

I'm not the one who made the comparison anyway, and Rashford was playing on the wing in 19/20 and yeah Hazard in his prime was better than Martial and his numbers were consistently better too.

A lot of people have talked about Perisic the last couple of years, particularly when Croatia reached World Cup. I didn't even watch the last cup final with Inter and my opinion on him has always been the same.

Not everything is about output. I just hate this argument. Perisic style of play opens a lot of opportunities for his teammates to get into critical areas and score. Helping the team dynamics is far more important than stat padding for your own glorious numbers record while the team dynamics suck hard *cough*Bruno*cough*. James problem wasn't just because he wasn't scoring goals. It was because he was useless on the pitch even outside that.

In 19/20 our entire attack was built around providing the ball to Martial and Rashford. Of course they will score a lot of goals than a winger like Perisic. It's not a surprise that once we signed Ronaldo and the dynamics shifted to him, Rashford has been doing feck all since then and Martial left on loan where he still sucks.

Stat padding isn't everything. What matters is how the player makes the team play.

I don't think what Martial, Rashhord or Greenwood for that matter were doing in 19/20 was stat-padding. Having Perisic instead wouldn't also have made any difference to the team's level under Mourinho or Ole after him.

Doesn’t really mean anything does it? One was putting in top level performances in World Cup finals, Champs League finals, and cup finals, showing consistently good form for over three years…the others scored more goals in the PL for a season.

Perisic has been playing Wingback/leftback most of the time. Comparing his stats to forwards is really weird to say the least.

Perisic has never reached the level Sanchez showed at Arsenal. How are you sure he wouldn't have stunk up this place just as much as Sanchez if not more?

The same Roma who have been in the Serie A top 4 more often than not over more than a decade, and who have been recently (since 2018) pushed out of it by the resource abundant Atalanta? Roma also have the highest Serie net spend since JoMo arrived and are among the top 3 net spenders since the last time they were in the CL (didn't bother to check out further than that, but wouldn't be surprised if they were among the top 4 spenders for a lot longer than that).
