What a ridiculous agenda driven post. I suppose Mourinho is to be blamed for our players having an off day in front of the goal in the first half. It was a calculated risk of picking an understrength team, knowing our position in the group. There was nothing negative about the play and the approach. And under LVG, we would have passed the ball aimlessly between defenders, created one chance, and still conceded at the end.
If i have an agenda according to your warped logic, so have you.
He manages the team and picks them and coaches them. So responsibility should fall on him. Calculated risks? That's even worse. Taking things for granted is why we are so far behind City now. Our inability to get a goal, kill off a game or even hold out for a draw has cost us time and again.

You can have all the chances in the world, but the only thing that matters at the end of the match is the ball in the net. The result matters. Anything else does not matter. I can argue its largely the same as what we gone through with LVG.

You make it sound like it's a good thing/spinning it into a positive yarn to lose when we shouldnt have lost at all. And this is just only Basel. Had we been playing PSG or even City we would have been blitzed aside the way we were playing.

This place is basically no craic when the football isn't going well. I come on here and also probably vent a little too much sometimes!

I really hope Jose sorts whatever it is out but I'm starting to feel like he may be quite a big part of the problem. I have nothing really to compare it to though. he's the first world class manager we've had since Fergie, he's obviously improving us points wise and we should be supporting him but I can't shake the feeling somehow this isn't going to end well....

this (so far) depressingly enough is still our best season in ages. From here It could all click again or it could all fall apart, at least we are still thereabouts! I really hope it all clicks and can genuinely see it happening. We have some great players who just need to hit top form together and anybody would find it hard to beat us, especially at home. Despite that we are far too dependant on pogba and our wing back options are very poor. If Mitchell can't even get in the team for a cameo at this stage he might as well move on because surely a big signing will be drafted in over the next season or 2 and it's clearly been a problem position for us. Saying that, the manager should still pretty much have most of the squad he wants by now in his second season and if he doesn't then there's nobody really to blame for that except for himself.

We are top of the CL group and 2nd in the league, fresh off winning 2 trophies last season. Why is it depressing to say this is so far our best period over 4 years and how is Jose a problem when we are doing well?

Shouldn't overanalyse a dead rubber. And as for the dependency on Pogba, we will rectify it in the summer. After 3 years of buying average to mediocre players, we needed 3 summers to revamp the squad.

My only concern from last night's game is Lukaku's form. Otherwise, as Jose said, it was a freak result that happens once every 10 times. And that too against Basel, who almost always do well against English clubs.

Geez, your posts are so obnoxious. Is your tongue that far up the Mourinho's arse that you need to get so defensive at any criticism of him?
Haram is like Jose even in his posting style. True devolution :D

Think a lot of the anti Mou shit is confirmation bias and lack of footballing knowledge tbqfh. Not to say there ain’t a long list of my grievances, but objectively (and all that “United way” aside) we are fine.

For me, next summer is crucial. Reality being, he will be our manager then cos when all is said and done this season will be ‘satisfactory’ - which is fine all things considered (I know many-a people have short attention spans but get real, don’t forget where we crawled out from post Moyes-Lvg).

I want the P fecking L next season though. Or he can go bla bla bla. *extremely angry face*

An agenda against our own manager is ridiculous. People are now insulting me because they cannot counter what I am saying.

I've seen people respectfully counter your opinions only for you to turn into a stroppy kid and claim that we shouldn't question anything José does because he's won a lot in the past.

Every time people here have something to say against him you come up with some variant of "everyone has an agenda against Mourinho" or "people are brainwashed by the media" or some other nonsense. There were many posts like that during LVG and Moyes' tenures and those 'top red' posts were rubbish back then and they are still rubbish now. I wonder if you were so loyal to those two during their time here? When the fans turned on Moyes and Van Gaal were you so self righteous then?

The only agenda here is for United to be a successful club. For some that means Mourinho is the perfect manager to do so, for others not so much. People can support and love this club without agreeing with or liking the manager. You can back Mourinho and in all I do as well (while also having my concerns) , but just because someone does not does not mean they have an agenda. As for people 'insulting you', you don't really help yourself when many of your postings are full of sarcasm, condescension, and just generally obnoxious.

For me, he did most things right today. I usually criticize him a lot after such matches, but I think it was more to do with the players today. He rested a lot of players and gave game time to others who needed match fitness and games. We also looked quite good in the 1st half where we looked like we wanted to score.

Things changed in the second half with substitutions. I think the players underperformed today. They just could not get into their groove in the second half. Think Jose needs another good midfielder and a fullback to truly turn us into a dominant team.

You didn't address any of the points I made?

When Fergie set up his team differently in CL, it was never described as 'negative' or 'defensive'. When Mourinho does it though, what is being said? People are brainwashed by the fecking media.

Right or wrong? When I point out the CSKA away game you reply that im licking Jose's arse? Are you afraid that maybe I have a valid point?

What's funnier is we are top of the group this year and we all know what happened when we met Basel in 2011...

Wow this thread is embarrassing! I hope he signs a new 6 year deal just to piss people off even more. He's doing a decent enough job with what we have. We're never going to be world beaters with the likes of Darmian, Lingard, Blind, Smalling, Fellaini, Herrera and a misfiring Lindelof and Mkhitaryan clogging up the squad.

The next 2 or 3 windows are going to be important. He just needs time. I hope he stays for a very long time.

It's true Jose has been a bit too defensive in some away games, but yesterday was different. We attacked more than we defended, only poor finishing let us down. The overreaction to the defeat is buffling. Maybe the moaners don't understand United will easily top our group unless we lose 5-0 at home against Csk Moscow.

Sir Alex earned his leeway, Mourinho hasn't. What is hard to understand?

Probably best not to include those two when you're defending Mourinho.

The game was approached in the right spirit. Pogba is coming back from a serious injury so taking him off was a good move. The players who remained on the pitch could easily have won that game. The guy brought on an extra striker ffs. People are making their arguments from a preconceived view point.
Yeah, we had a second striker while the starting striker moved to the right wing being useless in every way imaginable...

We were terrible in the second half and the team should not just fall apart when Pogba is not playing

Oh I'm sorry I forget that not every manager has made duff signings. Sir Alex never signed any duds did he? And the 'mighty' Pep was spot on with Bravo.

This whataboutism is a little tedious. All I'm saying is that when we blame the squad to excuse the job the manager is doing, it's probably best not to mention those players that the manager signed to said squad.

So Sir Alex was allowed to be pragmatic and Jose isn't?
Obviously it wasn't ideal but pragmatic wasn't Sir Alex's go-to option, he did it rarely. Everyone knows we didn't play stellar football in his final years, but no one complained because of everything he had done and achieved for the club. Maybe after Jose has a league title or two under his belt with us people will start to overlook that side of him.

What a bunch of cry babies this forum turns into when we lose, we dominated a half, and were very secure defensively until a feck up and lost a game. We have wingers as full backs while our board isnt investing to the amounts required somehow still people have an agenda against the manager. Ferguson lost similar group matches with better players and no one gives a feck. I really think this online trend of expecting(not wanting) to win every match is stupid. It simply does not happen for us, maybe city winning every match is doing united fans head in, but to put it simply, United no matter how big we are cannot compete without investing, they have 100 million fullbacks and we cant invest in that amount. This online pressure of trolling and getting one over other teams is probably forcing keyboard warriors to defend their non existent ego by calling for the head of the manager.

Losing isn't very pragmatic, regardless of who the manager is.
If you meant the Chelsea game then you have a point. But if you meant the Basel game, then you just have an agenda. This game was a dead rubber and everyone knows it. We lost, so what? We are still basically qualified top of the group unless you want to argue for the sake of arguing. I was playing with my phone the whole second half that is how anxious I was to get a result.

Everyone complained, all the fecking time, myself included! This is why it's bizarre that his final years are brought up every single time someone dares to suggest that Mourinho is not the second coming on Jesus Christ - nobody forgot how we played back then and he was relentlessly criticised for it. noodle's zombie football thread was constantly near the top for ages. Sir Alex wasn't given a free pass, with far better results and far better football than Mourinho's, so why should Mourinho be exempt from criticism?

So yeah, people won't overlook shite football even if Mourinho wins a league title or two or thirteen. And there's nothing wrong with that.

I expect us to win trophies playing a proactive and attacking brand of football. That shouldn't be hard for a club of our size, wealth, and history.
As I mentioned somewhere else, unless we are spending 100 million on upgrading our fullbacks, your expectations are not too realistic. Chelsea and Leicester did not really win those trophies with an attacking brand of football did they?

I'm saying that all too often "pragmatic" is confused with "boring" or "defensive" here. Mourinho is often defensive even when it's not very pragmatic to be so, see his eliminations in the CL against PSG and Atlético. As I posted earlier, I don't think he was negative yesterday so I'm arguing the principle here.

My point wasn't that Mourinho wasn't exepmt from criticism, I agree with everything you said. I guess I didn't say what I was trying to say properly.

Mourinho has spent lots of money, he broke the transfer fee world record (at the time). Our squad is one of the most expensively assembled ever, money isn't an excuse. As for Leicester and Chelsea, I couldn't care less how they play. I only care what we do.

Bingo. Revisionism at its finest to suggest Sir Alex didn't get criticised.

Being selective is what is really tedious. Who cares that he bought Lindelof and Mkhi? So you're saying it's okay because the other players weren't his signings?? As I said before, when he beat Newcastle, there was only one post in here. Soon as we lose, the anti-Mourinho brigade are out in full force. He won 2 trophies and got us in the CL in his first season. We've had major injuries and yet are still second to rampant City, top of our CL group and still in all domestic cup competitions.

I get that some will never accept Mourinho, no matter what he does. That's their choice and I don't really care.

Comparing this rubbish to Fergie just plain stupidity. Defend Mou all you want but just stop bringing Fergie into it. Towards the end Fergie got a little.....complacent? in both recruitment and approach to games yet still we still put out amazing comeback performances and brilliant football majority of the time. I remember sometimes under Fergie I used to hope we conceded early when we were not looking bothered because I knew we'd just wake up and put 3 past them. And he was roundly criticized for it on here despite him still winning titles. Then some idiots come up here to tell us we think Mou is defensive because we've been been 'brainwashed by the media' and nothing to do with some performances he's put out with us and since his Chelsea,Inter and Madrid days.

We just look crap against any half decent team, and even shit teams away from home. Yesterday we did the same thing we've done already against Everton, S'ton and Huddersfield which is totally collapse in the 2nd half and look like a pub team after a decent first half. There's nothing Fergiesque about this shit, it's only normal its going to cost us every once in a while.

His attacking game plan is shockingly bad. We cant create proper chances and our attacking play is so slow, boring and based on safety. That's the biggest negative for me and why we wont win the title

I didn't watch the first half yesterday but by all accounts we had several clear chances?

I've seen this notion repeated severally, like do you want us to be congratulating Mourinho and throwing a parade when we beat fecking Newcastle at Old Trafford? And what's with all the anti Mourinho nonesense please, some of us have been fully supportive of Mourinho till we started seeing performances like Celta Vigo last season and Liverpool this season and discovering that it will be the norm. It's not about accepting Mourinho, some people just have higher standards and expectations from the so called biggest club in the world and a world class manager than only beating shit teams at home and looking clueless away and having a very poor record against the top 6

I didn't watch the first half yesterday but by all accounts we had several clear chances?
A couple yes but maybe one clear cut chance for Lukaku, other than that, our attacking play was just dull and slow. No vertical play, not enough pressure, no chances for Lukaku which we should feed as much as we can. He's just lost upfront while we cant utilize players like Martial to a bigger extend. Pogba constantly had to drop deep to make sure we play the ball forward at one point

His attacking play is crap yes. It’s quite apparent that he coaches defensive shape and relies on his forwards to kinda do their own thing going forward. Without Pogba’s creativity our midfield is shite, there’s no systemic approach/plan. The team shits themselves moving the ball against any good pressing side.

De Bruyne did that interview on Sky recently and mentioned how Pep rinses the Box Passing drill in training. I’ve no coaching badges but I can see its’ function in their play.

Wtf do we do in training??
