Over reaction which is typical of this forum. Sacking him? Seriously? We've just beaten Chelsea and Liverpool recently ffs.

We are making progress under Jose but it's slow. Sacking him and replacing him with yet another Manager who will want to bring in yet more players just starts the cycle all over again. It's knockout football, Jose fecked up, it happens. Recover from the game, finish 2nd and push for the FA Cup. Then go again next season with more signings under him. What the club needs right now is some stability after Sir Alex, Moyes and Van Gaal, we'll get that with Jose. We might not get to the domination we had with Sir Alex but tough shit. Footballs moved on since then and we were fortunate to have one of the best Managers of all time.

Alternatively we gamble on another Manager who might drag us back down to where Van Gaal/Moyes had us. Or they might push us on. Personally, i'd go with the safe option for now and then gamble in a few years.

I don't think we should sack him at all and would agree we're making progress, but a harsh critic could argue that our wins over Liverpool and Chelsea aren't really massive achievements but what should be expected of us: we've been outspending them as of late and rightfully should be above both in the league. They've both got plenty of quality but also have plenty of glaring weaknesses.

And while I don't advocate sacking Mourinho, plenty of clubs sack managers on a regular basis and do just fine. Chelsea have won more titles than anyone else this decade (if you count 2009/10) and yet they change managers on a regular basis. City will join them on three this year and they've sacked two PL winning managers when it was clear they weren't doing a good enough job. And while the idea of long-term managerial stability is appealing, it's increasingly rare now; most clubs switch managers every few years, and Mourinho doesn't have any history of staying at a club for a sustained period of time. Now again, I agree we shouldn't sack him, and I believe he should be given another season, but most clubs change managers regularly and they generally don't fall apart as a result.

Similarly, we need to stop thinking of progress as this linear, guaranteed thing that'll happen when a manager stays at the club - yes, Mourinho staying could be a mechanism through which we improve due to being stable, but stagnation is also possible. LVG improved us demonstrably in 2014-15 but we sunk backwards after that. Mourinho improved Chelsea significantly between 2013-15 but then had a nightmare of a season.

My problem with Mourinho is that while I rate him as a manager insofar as he clearly knows the game and is able to set up a team well, he's also inherently pragmatic and defensive in a way most top clubs aren't. Look at most of the sides winning the top leagues and they tend to win by simply beating better attacking sides than their opponents as opposed to highly organised defensive units. That's different to when Mourinho first started out. He's capable of improving us, but I'm not sure his defensive strategy will yield success.

So, yeah - I don't think he should be sacked, and I think we're improving, but I also think we need to stop inherently regarding him being here as something that's 'stabilising' no matter what, because stability doesn't always yield success and can lead to stagnation, and because other top sides change managers on a regular basis and get away with it.

I do think that there was so many poor performers on the pitch, along with a really poor team performance that it's hard to nail him for this result.

(I'll fecking try though ;) )

Firstly I think it would be a flat out lie to suggest this result doesn't take some of the shine off the Liverpool and Chelsea results. It was pretty dreadful how it went tonight.

3 shots on target and United didn't have the excuse of 'scored early and we just shut up shop - nothing to see here'. Really poor energy levels, poor passing and decision-making.

I thought Mourinho teams didn't get tired? Isn't that why we don't run as much or something? We looked pretty fecking tired.

Don't understand how he set the team up. Didn't really see what the formation was. Matic pretty much was left by himself (was that intentional?). Fellaini up top behind Lukaku created nothing - so it didn't work if that was the plan.

Creative players like Pogba and Sanchez look like pub players at the current time. No idea what's going on there.

He may hope that the league form continues and we finish strong in the league because there's no hiding on this, it's a black mark against him and his team tonight. Beaten by a pretty average side in terms of their performance (and yet still better than United).

p.s. that is officially as bad as anything LVG served up.

He doesn’t deserve anymore backing, he has been nothing short of cowardly this season.
Even Fergie lost at home against bilbao and ajax.

Yes today was one of the cowardly performances. But that doesn't mean he gets the boot. I pray that the performances improve but if the same dross gets served next season, he can pack his bags.

If Klopp had come out and said that Man Utd have Champions League but they don't have the FA Cup, he'd have been laughed at!
Mourinho looks like he's spent so long trying not to lose, that he's forgotten how to win

Was always going to get stick as soon as we stop winning - the football is dire and he's too cowardly in the big games.

Too much of a reactive manager, but there aren't many out there that have the experience to take this club forward. I'd love a left field replacement but it just won't happen.

Feck off Mourinho. Get out of my club.

wow

Just said the result is no big deal and boasted about knocking us out with Porto. What the feck?

Some seriously emotional people here.

He got it wrong tonight. Get over it. Stop using childish words like "coward" and such.

In a league consisting of Conte, Klopp, Wenger, Poch and Pep amongst all your rivals you don't comfortably sit 2nd in the league by being a coward. You don't manage a side that scores the 3rd highest goals in the league by being a coward. You don't have 2 Champions Leagues to your name by being a coward and have a CV like he does from being a coward either. His post match interview is reminding the short minded media (and clearly many posters here) what he's all about.

Ferguson was dumped out by Leverkusen in one season and there were 1 or 2 instances where he didn't even make it through the group stages. This shit happens and no manager gets every big game right. Get over it. He has us improved us considerably and just be patient that he'll take us further where we need to go.

He really say that?

why on earth would you give mourinho the green light to make more big money signings, he's failed with pogba and sanchez so why would it be any different if he brought in yet another supposed game changer like dybala for example?

The football has been slow and clueless for longer than most people think. The performances in Ferguson's last few years were almost identical to what we've seen under Moyes, LvG and now Mourinho. We wouldn't start playing before conceding etc. The only difference is that he somehow managed to win the league regularly with players like Gibson and Buttner

Did he seriously say that? His ego is out of control. Get him the feck out. Embarrasement. Mercenary that sums up our club right now.

You give him 250M more, he'll buy players and play the same shit on a stick football again. You can't teach an old dog new tricks.

Yeah in Europa in a competition we didn’t even give a toss about.

We've got plenty of cracking players already. Mourinho's teams in his glory days, Porto, Chelsea and Inter played with an unshakable belief in themselves that came from Mourinho. I just don't see that in his sides any more.
I don't think he'll get the sack in the summer. I wouldn't sack him either but on the other hand I'm torn. It was so beautiful on Saturday but today broke him a bit.

He has the gall to question the ambition of the board, who have given him the worlds most expensive player, the leagues highest paid player, Zlatan etc. Bundesliga player of the season, whose confidence he destroyed and now we have sold after 1 year.

Where's his ambition on the field? Where are the forward thinking tactics. What guys like Sarri, Guardiola, Klopp do. That's revolutionising football. Positive football. Not these hide in the corner and pray 'tactical masterclasses' .

When the "win at all costs" manager fails to win there's really not a whole lot left to like.

As a general rule, "bypass midfield with long balls" is an awful plan to watch a Manchester United descend to. Against a poor side like this it's extra grim.

I think it has its merits against Liverpool or City, who will simply out-pass and out-press us in those central areas. But we have more than enough to compete with Sevilla in that zone. Why we decided it would be a good strategy to concede the midfield battle for 180 minutes, I have no idea. It was bizarre.

That’s the problem with playing that kind of football. If you play super defensively you have to win, because playing like that and still losing is a quick way to lose suppport. That was appalling tonight, starting Fellaini was the most egregious mistake. I got nothing against the guy personally but he’s bang average-to-poor in almost every regard. He lacks quality and should never be starting for us in a game of this importance. Jose gets it wrong probably 50% of the time, it’s not good enough.

Sounds like something a Liverpool manager would say to wind us up.

feck off Jose

I will be very surprised if he sees out 3 years with us. That's not because I think he won't do well relatively speaking. He might still win a FA Cup this year and the narrative will be 3 trophies and the highest league finish post Fergie which you have to admit is a great narrative and cannot be called a bad job. I will be however surprised if he remains with us because his approach simply leaves zero room for mistake. It leaves such a sour disgusting taste in the mouth that the hangover from it is too great. People wonder why Klopp or Poch do not get the same criticism and apart from the financial disparity, the simple reason is there is no hidden malaise and resentment regarding how they approach games, it gives those managers more room for mistakes. With Mourinho, it's just always simmering, it is always on the fence that one shocking result like tonight's and all the reservations, lack of inspiration and general skepticism over the approach come back in full force.

Mourinho's tactics can be summed up with one word - cowardly.T

The individual performances of the players should be criticised but he takes most of the responsbility. It's fecking shameful and embarassing. How you can have the players at his disposal and have no defensive OR attacking oraganisation?

Yes I mean both. Getting men behind the ball and playing to the lowest common demonatator is something most managers can do. His greatest trick is getting the players to believe and do it but how much can you get away with it?

give this man 300 million this summer. Everybody knows that team is improving a lot but also lacks some key players, This kind of defeats are totally on Mourinho. It's not the end of the world.
Sighh... disappointed. But i still want to believe in him

The basic necessity of a manager to motivate your team and give them a plan to progress through rounds/win the game. Forget tactics for a minute.
The manager should be creating a TEAM, that know how to play with each other with even a little bit of cohesion. There have been games under Mourinho where we have no hunger, no motivation and the team looks like it has no plan.
Usually, you can just say it's 'a bad day at the office' or an 'off day'. We've had too many 'off days' for it to be a coincidence this season alone: Stoke away, Huddersfield, Newcastle, Leicester away, Bristol, Burnley at home, Southampton at home, Spurs away, Sevilla away and today. 10 times this season that the team has not looked up for it, or looked as if they have a plan. I refused to believe that's down to the players because half our team is new.

Regardless of results, which incidentally are utterly underwhelming, I can't stand to watch the football he has us playing. I would love to see the back of him in the summer. He will never be worth the cost.

Why not just sack him and move on? The football is going to be exactly the same regardless of signings and football has moved on. You cannot play like that anymore, the average number of goals has risen dramatically since he last won the CL.

There is literally no point to having Mourinho if you aren't at the top and winning, because you sacrifice everything else to be in that position. Without winning he gives you nothing but frustration and it's honestly horrible to watch us.

 I love him even more.

He should of reminded this deluded fan base about Fergie's last time in the Champions League.

Yeah in Europa in a competition we didn’t even give a toss about.
I think against bilbao, it was in the group stages round 5/6 i dont remember. Yes, europa in case of ajax.

Point being made that every good manager can have a bad day in the office.

Did he seriously say that? His ego is out of control. Get him the feck out. Embarrasement. Mercenary that sums up our club right now.
I refuse to believe he can say that. If he did, then he probably knows his time is up here and he is just egging us to sack him.

Even Fergie lost at home against bilbao and ajax.

Ferguson was dumped out by Leverkusen in one season and there were 1 or 2 instances where he didn't even make it through the group stages.

And prior to all those ties Fergie had won multiple leagues and cups for us, had already won the CL, and had done it all playing great football. Mourinho isn't fit to be compared with him.

WOW! Sackable offence!

Majority will hide under Jose’s tactics to deflect the fact that many of our players are just too poor. Pogba was shit when he came on. He added nothing to gear up the game.

Even after their 2nd goal, United had plenty of chances to get something. Smalling & Lukaku missed fat chances to get something out of the game but the quality was just too poor.

Harry Maguire of Leicester would have buried that Smalling chance with aplomb. Vardy would have scored from the Lukaku chance. The quality of some of the players aren’t just good enough at this level.

Sevilla deserved their win but it’s disgraceful that players earning £200k upwards can’t make accurate forward passes or carve out chances. Ben Yedder came on and he was miles ahead of any player we had playing today. I

I blame the players more than the tactics tonight. Valencia just surrendered the ball for their first goal, under no pressure at all when half of our players were upfield. He might get away with that against Brighton or Stoke.....such mistakes get punished in elite Europe.

I agree some of our players are poor, but our first 11 beats their first 11 every day of the week, this is all on Jose.
We could have had neymar out there tonight and he would have looked poor in our setup

Just watching his interview...He's gone full Moyes with his level of delusion.

At least have the balls to admit you made a mess of it ffs.

It's posts like these that makes this place a shithole. How many managers, on live tv, come out and admit they've made a mistake?
