No blame on Sanchez at all but the current squad had got their head around playing Mourinho's system well. Alexis has come in totally changed everything, Mourinho is to blame with his static drab football.

Anyone saying our forwards are shit are clueless. Sanchez looks a completely different player under us, Lukaku had zero support. Matic and Scott didn't go pass the half-way line during the second-half.
In this day and age we stand no chance against the top teams. We got lucky today, if we played like that against Madrid, PSG etc. We would get destroyed.

I know the Pep worship around here is frowned upon at times, but I've always thought Pep was the better manager. All things being equal, Pep would have our team playing much better football, and actually dominating these smaller teams. The difference in mentality is clear - play to dominate and win vs. play to stop the opposition playing.

Is he really "special once"?

I used to hear stories on how players would run through brick walls through him. The players just jog around like they dont care.
I dont even know what the plan was. If it was to be solid and restrict Sevilla and escape with a draw, we were lucky to do that. This certainly didnt go to plan.
Its like weve just put 11 players out there and told them to do something on their own.

We seem to be hoping for a bit of magic from one player and thats it.
We dont press.
We dont counter well.
We dont play the target man well cos either the ball is kicked too far away from Lukaku or it bounces off him or we dont have runners off him.

There is no rhythm and no plan. It seems to change every match.

He hasn't been the special one since 2013.

That last season at Real has completely broken him for whatever reason. He's never been the same since and his teams have never been the same either.

People will point to his Chelsea title side, but the way they crashed out of the CL in 2014-2015 was embarrassing.

Can't help but think that was a missed opportunity tonight. If we'd played Sanchez on the right and martial on the left instead of Mata I think we'd have won that.

Mourinho's third season next year. Expect it to be much much worse than this. We're heading towards "losing the plot" territory soon.

Sanchez
Pogba
Lukaku
Martial
Rashford
Mata

All playing below themselves. It's very worrying to have such a wide range of attackers underperforming.
We can’t let our talented players wasted time on someone who is clueless to coach a team to attack. The board need to make a decision at the end of the season.

After every big away match the same situation here. People are in shock. Why can't you accept that this is jose mourinho. Man who thinks: result is only thing which is important. He went for draw , we get a draw. At OT we will beat them and be in 1/4 finals. It is classic jose mourinho.
We will never play attacking football on big away games. Get over it.

We were very good in the early part of the season. Something has happened and I won't be surprised if he goes sooner than expected. From a footballing perspective we are the worst big club.

Not just Pep. Any slightly attack-minded coach.

Can't see us holding on to top four with this severe lack of momentum and fixture list coming up.

Also definitely feels like for whatever reason the players just don’t believe in what they’re being told to do. The old stories of players running through walls at will for him are a thing of the past now.

It’s still frowned upon to say but I really don’t think he’ll be here by the end of next season.

I don't think he knows what to do. It's the same old every week. I think he's stabilised things a little, and I think the squad is actually pretty strong right now, so it's not all bad, but I just don't think he's the man to take us forward.

We'll probably make it into the quarters next month, and that's great, but anyone who says they'd be happy with 2nd place in the league and quarter finals in the champions league is ignoring the appalling performances we're putting in. It's a strong squad at a good age - it's time to make the change.

Don't know why we bother signing attacking players. It literally makes no difference who is up front. Whether it's Zlatan or Lukaku or Sanchez or Mkhitaryan, we are equally as shit. The one constant in it all is Mourinho. He's the problem. Him and his miserable brand of football need binning off

You don’t even know his name yet want him in.

And no you wouldn’t want to finish 5th.

I don't care what his name is to be honest. I've watched lots of Napoli this season and they've been brilliant. Yes I'd rather watch good football and finish fifth. I watch football to enjoy it at the end of it all. It's why I started supporting United in the first place. I've been lucky enough to see us win an endless amount of trophies so couldn't care less if I never see us win another. I just want to be entertained. It's first and foremost what this club is supposed to be about. I can accept the odd defensive performance when needed but not when it's the absolute norm.

Starting to get pissed off with him. Such a dangerous result tonight caused by another defensive performance without any real cohesion.

They had about 20 shots on goal, a decent team would have scored three or four.

Imagine Messi and Suarez with some of the chances missed tonight.

Completely with you on that.

He clearly believes this is the way to play to be successful, and it’s served him well in the past when managing other clubs. Although I don’t ever remember Madrid playing that kind of way. So is he deliberately setting us up like that because he doesn’t trust the players, or are the players just not following his instructions well enough?

It’ll work for as long we win trophies, then he can justify it. As soon as we stop winning there will be a massive outcry for him to go due to the way we play.

He signed five of the fourteen players who played tonight.
Matic, Lindelof, McTominay(promoted, counting him as he never played under LvG), Pogba, Lukaku, Sanchez. They played the majority of the game. That's 6/11. He's got this group of players, but how many of them seem motivated by him? Can't blame it on players as if we've replaced most of the ones that started under LVG and Moyes.

"controlled" they'll say.
"Disciplined performance" they'll exclaim.
"Resolute defending" they'll proclaim.

The game was only competitive in terms of scoreline.

We didn't defend well and every dangerous cross seemed to find its man in our area.
They were wasteful, incredibly wasteful, and we were spared only by (a) David de Gea's heroics and (b) their lack of quality up front.
Shot-wise, long and short, we were obliterated. We lost more 50/50's than I can begin to fathom. We ran less, passed less, and they worked harder.
It wasn't just that they were technically much better; it was that this was coupled with their superior work ethic.

There is a damning statistic that details Mourinho's points won away against the top six in the EPL with both Chelsea and United. Pragmatism would be a cute argument if statistics argued for its necessity.
This offensively shy method of approaching "tough" away games against top opposition is self-refuting by both its performances on the field and the results it yields.

This was his record against top six, away, as of Oct 2017.

This thread is madness.
When did Sevilla become a minnow? Their entire season is their home form and we've just taken that away from them.

Good game.

Obviously Mourinho set up the team that way for an away CL tie. Ugh, the gloryhunting fans need to feck off already. United always set up like this under Fergie and barely ever scored in or won any UCL away games, when he was here and no one ever complained. The fans are so spoilt.

You see Liverpool, City and Spurs put out decent attacking performances week after week.
Even when they don't score, their attacking chemistry is on show.
You just get the vibe that we don't train.
Once again, I have no problem with being defensive. But when you attack, do it with purpose.
Where's the pressing, where's the movement?
When those teams attack, look at how many players they have pushing forward.
Every fecking thing we do is so passive.

I'd have Mourinho out of the club immediately if I could, but I think even this version of Mourinho will finish the season stronger than some are thinking. He did it last year, too - rode out a hell of a lot of criticism to finish the season on a winning note.

I reckon things will pick up as players return from injury, and the attacking players he's got can only improve their form. It could all gel at the right time and I think we'll scrape top 4. I hope the board see the reality of this situation, though, which is that Liverpool and Spurs are likely to be better next season. Will we be?

Correct. How every single poster on this forum doesn’t have this same thought process honestly annoys me.

Roma 08, Milan 10 and Schalke 11 are examples of away first leg wins under Ferguson.

Watching Spurs, PSG, Real Madrid, Liverpool and City last week and then seeing the negative, boring, outdated shit served up by us and Chelsea over the last 2 nights has been a stark kick in the nuts. I'm where I was with LvG in the second season, he's turned watching United into a chore.

Get off your high horse and stop being so obnoxious.

Agree they have lost only one game there all season .. But that really doesnt take anything away from Jose's setup away v good teams. Or almost any team for that matter ..

No no, y'see we are rewriting history, this garbage is what it was like under Fergie on the regular, we are just remembering it wrong, I mean we even played this way against Huddersfield and Newcastle away, nevermind Sevilla, can't recall Fergie doing that.

Even if we had sneaked a 0-1 at the end tonight, I would still have a bad, bad feeling. This was new, the players looked completely lost. Just as against Newcastle.

We have Pogba and Martial, and now also frecking Alexis Sanchez, and we look like a compact Everton-team. I have no idea how to explain a single thing, my understanding of the tactical aspect is too limited. I of course see what is happening and what I think we miss, but I have no idea how to explain why it happens. We can point to missing a player in the middle, but all the best teams play well and similar even w/o their most important player.

How is this team 2nd in the league and why are we suddenly so incredibly poor? Like mentioned earlier, this looked like a team that does not believe in their manager and does not look like they’re having any fun.

Agreed. Some are actually saying that Sevilla are now in with a better chance of going through after that game which makes zero sense whatsoever. If we don't beat Sevilla on our own ground then we are truly shite.

We've taken away their home advantage and still have our home advantage. Play it safe away from home and take risks at home...that's how you win these knockout ties.
