I just think you're holding players of whom, through no fault of their own, too much is being asked to the standards of normal Manchester United attackers. They just don't have the consistency to turn up and put in performances week in week out and the unit suffers because there's always one or two who are dragging down the side.
For my money our attacking options are ranked something like this:
World Class, would start for any team in the world:
Starting quality: Lukaku
Rotation options: Rashford, Lingard, Martial, Mata
Not good enough: Mhkitaryan
Unknown quantities: Zlatan
In order for us to play well we're asking every player in our attacking ranks to play a level better than they currently are. That's no recipe for consistent attacking performances.
Well that's a fair argument. But it also (if it's true that Mourinho doesn't really coach his attackers) makes management look a bit daft for giving these players so much freedom. And I do think it looks like that when I watch United every week.
