Jose Gimenez

We need a leader more than anything, we need a player that will demand more of others and that will give everything and more in a United shirt. Is Gimenez the answer, or are we just making the same mistakes and buying excellent players that don't actually fit the requirements of the club?

I really like Gimenez, for what it's worth. But I prefer Tuanzebe as an option going forward at this point.

How good is he on the ball?

I think if we have him and Bailly, would that not be too similar? I think we need that Rio/Vidic type partnership. When I've seen Gimenez sometimes he plays a great pass, other times he hoofs the ball. He's ridiculously talented though, there's no question about that.

Then Giminez is the one. Dude retired Lugana for Uruguay, who had lead them for ages....

Agree, Gimenez would be a great buy for us or any of the top clubs. His potential is scary and despite being 21 he looks so accomplished playing for a top club in Atletico. He's also learning his trade from best in the business in Godin and Simeone which is a massive bonus.

We won't get anyone if we try to emulate a Rio/Vidic partnership, there simply aren't any defenders out there in Rio's mould. Bailly and Giminez are both aggressive but a good partnership is all about building an understanding as to when to attack the ball and when to drop back to cover for your partner. Gimenez is nothing special on the ball but he'd be a massive improvement over Smalling and Jones. He's been impressive every time I've watched him with only shaky performance coming against Bayern in 2nd leg but you'd expect few of those considering his age.

I hope we don't obsess with signing only top CBs who are at their peak because there are very few right now and prising them away would be a futile task. Last time, we signed a world class defender was Rio back in 2002 and it helped we were top dogs then and it'd be much more difficult now with immense competition for signature. Since then, we have bought young CBs and tried to mould them into top defenders. Hope we continue this trend and allow 2 young CBs to form a great partnership.

We would have two mean and no nonsense types of CB who wouldn't go and cry to the physio whenever they get a bubu in training

I'm not saying I wouldn't want this signing but I don't think he would the BEST suited CB for us.

No chance in Januray. Plus Delaney is a bit shit.

He's barely playing for Atletico right now and whose to say they wont buy a CB themsleves in January? it seems he's had a falling out with Simeone.

Agreed, he's good but all the CB's we have are in the exact same mold as him.

Think he would be really good next to Bailly. Two reliable center backs who love to defend and are excellent defensively, are capable on the ball and both have world class potential. Definitely a chance to get him in January as well, with him not being first choice, but he would still cost a lot. Worth it though most likely, so I'm all for it.

He played in the CL. He was injured at the beginning and Savic played well, but Savic wasnt good the last few weeks. Think he is back in their starting eleven again.

He wouldn't be the first.

Fair enough, I guess we'll see if he does retain his place in the coming weeks.

My dream CB signing would be Alderwiereld. But he i think is even more unattainable than Godin and Varane.

Giminez is a top CB, especially considering his age. The best in his age group for sure. He is a pure pure defender and the prospect of a settled Bailly-Giminez partnership at the back will make any opposing team wet their pants.

I'd only question signing Giminez because we have Tuanzebe (and Roshaun) in our ranks and they have a real chance of making it here. Plus I personally think CB is not a position we need to reinforce urgently.

Smalling and Jones will find themselves back to were they meant to be ie the bench

Unrealistic given Atlético's inconsistent form this season, and Delaney has a chequered past in terms of potential United signings, but all for this move. Not the perfect fit with Bailly (that would be Laporte), but Giménez is a better defensive talent than every single one of our centerbacks (even Eric), and young enough to become a formidable tower of strength for the long term. A departure from the Rio/Vidić or Carvalho/Terry sweeper/stopper holy grail, but given some freedom, he's a strong vertical runner in possession:

A bit like peak Jones (in a good way) or young Leverkusen Lúcio - who admittedly had more tactical leeway than Giménez does under Simeone, and could forge an uncompromising Lúcio-Samuel type combination with Bailly, with both equivalent pieces being much younger. His distribution on the ball could be improved over time, and his decision-making is sometimes a bit suspect, but that will come with some experience. In terms of raw defensive ability - the thought of having two supremely athletic U-23 centerbacks with world class talents is super enticing. Put a good DLP ahead of that and you wouldn't really miss out on the distribution/ball circulation element, IMO.

Oh, and he's a nutter, which is a good personality fit with trademark Mourinho defensive lines.

How does he compare to Niklas Sule of Hoffenheim?

How does he compare to Niklas Sule of Hoffenheim?
Süle's an excellent prospect, too, but they're quite different in terms pf physical characteristics, IMO, so it's hard to compare. Giménez is arguably in the second tier of centerback athleticism after the likes Ramos, but with sharper natural defensive awareness. While Süle is a hulking presence who's unbeatable in the air and more domineering from a physical standpoint, but not as athletic in short bursts. The former might have problems when asked to peel out wide and maybe contain shifty PL wingers (though he does perform well in Hoffenheim's central 3), but there are no such concerns with Giménez - who excels in that department. And while Giménez isn't as overpowering in the air as Süle, he's great on the ground in terms of coverage and resilient enough to withstand an onslaught from even the most punishing target type #9s.

Wouldn't say no to either player given that they're among the best young defensive talents around, but Giménez just about edges it. Süle's more realistic, though, and could develop into an improved version of Van Djik, so there's that. And, he's supposed to be a United fan?

I was just looking for an interview as he said something similar some minutes ago in the "Aktuelles Sportstudio"... - and I found one from November 2015. Interesting.

A somewhat free translation:

Do you have a favourite club?
Manchester United is a dream since I have been there with 12 years with an exchange program and was allowed to walk on the pitch during a trip to Old Trafford. I am a little bit in love with the stadium. England would be very interesting as the playing style with more body contact matches well to my strengths. It would be cool, but right now I recently have made a new contract (with Hoffenheim).

Who's his agent?

Dont know about his agent, but the agency is Goalkick Sportmanagement. Never heard of the agents working there, but some of their more prominent clients are Navas, Honda, Romagnoli and Jorginho.

Thanks.

He's another top young CB worth keeping an eye on, will cost about the same as Gimenez I expect

The fact that his contract is ending in 2018 gives us a very realisitic chance of signing him. Looks like he has stagnated though, which is a concern.

He's good but a nutter like Rojo and Bailly, our backline is desperately in need of a brain that can add some composure and calm to it.

What about his facial expressions? Does he head the ball when kicking it would be a better option?

Honestly, would be a fantastic signing for us. Hope we get him. I think we'll see another 4 very astute, high quality signings from Mourinho this summer, and our squad will start to look seriously strong, front to back. I think he'll strengthen the spine of the team again. As he should.

Instead of signing two "decent" CBs to add to all the ones we already have, I'd rather we sign one world class one that can play alongside Bailly and help bring him on.

Bailly himself must earn this pedestal he's being out on. I'm not convinced he's our best defender at all, at least not yet.

Isn't he in the last year of his contract or approaching it and has fallen out of favour with Simeone. I really like him and he seems like a Jose defender. I'd personally rather get an experienced CB but not many available so I would rather we bough VDJK or Laporte.

Looks like a defender Mourinho would be interested in signing. He is no ball playing defender though which seems to be an important criteria nowadays.

No but playing him alongside a calm world class partner would help bring him on no end.

Ticks a lot of the right boxes.

He's good on the ball and can pick a pass, he's Messi compared to Smalling and Jones. Would be a great signing but between him Rojo and Bailly we would be looking at a red card every other week. Think Jose will bring in this guy and a calmer head like Van Dijk or Keane to replace Jones and Smalling.
