Not so sure, since Smalling has been mainstay in our defence ahead of 30M Bailly and 40M Lindelof.

Right, and if you add him alongside Bailly and Lindelof it still isn't good enough. Bailly and Lindelof weren't exactly blockbuster signings. Bailly has been injured most of the time and Lindelof is taking time to settle in. Smalling certainly lacks on the ball a lot regardless.

I'm pretty sure Lindelof was 35 million euros as well.

Incoming Transfers
  • Lb: Alex Sandro - 45m
  • Center back: Alderweireld - 40m
  • Rb: Cedric Soares - 15m
  • CM: Fred - 30m
  • Winger: Sessegnon - 50m
Total - £180m

Outgoing transfers:
  • Martial - 70m
  • Blind - 10m
  • Darmian - 15m
  • Fellaini - 0
  • Carrick - 0
  • Pereira - 10m
  • Rojo (hopefully) - 20m
  • Mata (hopefully) - 15m
Total: £100-140m (dependent on last 2 leaving)

Budget is there for another big midfield or attacking purchase though. Just no idea who.
So we're going to sign one attacker and he's going to be left sided and a teenager. That makes no sense whatsoever.

there is no evidence to suggest a new CB will solve our defence either. if we indeed sign 6 new players, some 2/3 might not be blockbuster signings. Some new ones might turn out to be crocs and some might take time settling in. In short, there is no evidence to suggest 6 new signings will improve us. In fact, I think the spine of team is set, so the new (accessory) signings are not going to make any significant difference at all.
I am not much bothered if we sign 6 or just 2 or sign nobody tbh.

Yep. Just compare to put things into perspective.

I’d wager Bailly is our best CB. On City, they have Kompany-Otamendi-Laporte and arguably Stones that are all better than him. That’s both their starting CBs better than our best CB + their backup and 4th option which you could argue.

Latter is true, 35m

We will never win the league with this current backline. No chance. At the very least we need a LB.

Despite claims people make about mourinho teams being boring in the past (for me they were only defensive in bigger games), something about this utd team seemed off compared to the usual jose team. Theres a genuine lack of sharpness and aggression in the side. So i checked the stats on whoscored, and it proved so. The particular areas with differences with the full back and centre midfield positions. with our full backs and centre midfielders producing half as many tackles and interceptions as past mourinho teams. This is why it seems like we never win possession back for a quick counter attack, hence why we can seem overly defensive and boring. If we can get an upgrade on both full back positions, and a midfielder that can legimately partner a not so agile matic( while pushing pogba up), we can start looking like a true mourinho team.

i would sign

alex sandro
sidibe
Lenglet
fred ( or any somewhat aggressive player that can pick the ball up from defence and distribute)

and maybe a right winger in mahrez from the funds we get from selling martial

we need new full backs at least. I am hoping one of jones or bailly can stay fit or that tfm or tuanzebe can start showing first team potential in the summer, but we need at least one new centre back who can stay fit. when we attack down the line, like most teams, the ball doesnt always stick. For some reason, whenever we are countered or a long ball is played with smalling in defence, unless hes having an outstanding day, the ball always sticks our half, mostly due to how bad our full backs are at dealing with balls in behind aswell.

I doubt United will make six signings. My guess is three or four. The center midfield and the wings could do with fresh faces. I guess we will have to wait until after the WC to find out.

6 is about the right number. No excuses for the next season, Woody should do the job despite the world cup and we should sign 6 players.

We'll need another whole season to bed the new players in. If we sign 6 first teamers.

TBH he did similar at Chelsea and he has given SAF, Moyes and LVG's signings a chance, its about time.

@ bolded, false he’s never said that
well he said we arnt going to do anything crazy, buy 6 players would be somthing crazy.

@ Dier, oh dear! :nervous:
he has been one of the best defensive midfielders in the league and arguably Europe for the past 4 seasons, has outperformed Matic in a few of them. Mourinho himself said they where considering him last year, he also by all accounts is a good leader in the dressing room, something we desperate for, a good 3 kick taker, another thing we don't have a lot of, knows the league, has champions league experience, can play several positions and is a good age. sounds like a great signing to me.

Knowing Jose, I'm expecting us to go for big, experienced names that have the right mentality to win and grind out results. Can't imagine we'll be picking up anyone under the age of 23 unless they're an exceptional talent.

Look at the league table, we don't score enough to win the league.

Ah yes because the league table is decided by goals scored, no wonder Liverpool are in 2nd place :wenger:.

Our problem this season is creating chances against packed defences, we are great when our backs are against the wall and have space to work with.

We must recapture the 4-0 FC we had in the first quarter of the season, which will see us score ~15 more goals. We do not need to score 100 goals in the league to win it.

CB - Toby Alderweireld
RB - Djibril Sidibe
LB - Alex Sandro
CM - Fred
CM - Sergej Milinkovic-Savic
RW - Gareth Bale

I think we'll sign 3. Alex Sandro, Sergej Milinkovic-Savic and Willian I think - something like that. We do need more, but I can't see 6 coming in. RW would be my priority, then full backs, then CM.

How is there 5 pages on speculating based on a twitter account who just writes "Times"? That doesn't make it legit at all!

NewsNow who scrapes news has nothing about a Times-article mentioning 6 new players - is there something I'm missing?

We certainly need to go big in the summer to catch city. But we don't really need 6. 4 works for us.

In order of prioirity: RW, RB & LB, CM.

Could get 4 top options in those positions done for under £200m which would be a good transfer window for us.

All depends on how many we're moving on. I suspect there's a few surplus to requirements and a few that Jose wants to make an example to the rest of the squad with.

If we do sign two midfielders we will struggle again next year. We need a play maker who can break apart defences and a ball winning mid.

Exactly - if you read the actual article, they only mentioned a possible 3 MAYBE 4 players

But... I guess people like to have their fun.

He's left footed and is too good to play in defence, ergo RW.
You are aware he's played half the season at left wing? Left footed players are still allowed to play on the left you know...

I think this is where the mods needs to step in, if a reliable source is misquoted and stop the threads - Now everyone (we're 5 pages in without any criticial thinking) probably expects 6 new players on a false twitter-fact.

It's not doing Woodward, Mourinho or us as fans any good.

From the names we've been linked with, only Sessegnon appeals to me. I feel like Shaw has had his chances and it's time to give someone else their shot. If Fulham goes up, he's staying there for sure, but developed properly he could be a player here for the next 17 years.
