Jordy Clasie

Van Gaal looked like he wanted to play with De Guzman, De Jong and Sneijder in midfield. But De Guzman injured his hamstrings last week. This whole week in the training sessions it looked like Clasie might play with De Jong and Sneijder in midfield against Spain.

So if he gets a chance against Spain it'll be interesting to see how he does, he's a type of player that might do reasonably well against Xavi/Iniesta style players. And it's also interesting what happens in the next matches if De Guzman regains his fitness.

4th choice in the current Dutch set-up? What about Blind?

from what i have seen of clasie, he is good at retaining possession. I mentioned him today on another thread and got ripped for it. I havent seen him enough to fully warrant how good he is. But i noticed he was looking around and could shimmy out of trouble, which isnt a bad start.

Will have to see more of him in the WC. Hes a bit slight though, so whether he could take the demands of the PL, i dont know.

One of the things most passers share in common, is small height. xavi/scholes/verratti/fabregas. pirlo as well has a slender frame, although he is tall.

But like i say it is the way he shimmys out of danger that caught my eye.

You are mistaken.

I think it is you that is mistaken.

Strootman is as good as Gareth Barry,’ former Russia and Glasgow Rangers manager Advocaat said. ‘He’s a very useful player for every team. Especially when he’s surrounded by better players.’

If Fabregas is small than Pirlo is also small.

About Clasie, he is not influencial enough, he can pick a great pass at any moment, but lack of consistency at a very good level in full match

That makes no sense, cuz, Strootman was the best player in Roma's midfield and he ran that team till his injury. Apart from Pjanic, Strootman had the same effect as Totti had 10years ago - all went thru him.

He seems a bit reminiscent of Cleverley in terms of style of play. Obviously a much better player and he is quite a tenacious player with decent tackling ability also. He may suit van Gaal's philosophy down to a tee, with his spatial awareness and ability to retain possession with consummate ease, but I would still feel a bit apprehensive if we make a thorough move for him. Not exactly taking the Eredivisie by storm as it is and I've probably prefer Blind if we were offered a choice between the two.

He should be way down the pecking order, we should bring those kind of players in if all other good targets have turned us down and come August you want someone in on the middle of the pitch, I'd consider spending €10-€15m on Clasie or Blind, but they aren't going to make a world of difference for us in terms of quality on the middle of the pitch.

To be fair, the quote by Advocaat was before Strootman went to Roma.

van gaal's ideal midfield is a 6,8,10.
6= defensive mid= de jong
8=box to box= de guzman (ideally strootman, will play clasie now)
10= attack mid= sniejder

If we could get him for around 10M I'd take him and that's only if we don't get our main targets, but then again Carrick is almost 33, Fletcher is all but finished at this level and Fellaini could be sold.

Clasie along with an all round midfielder in the summer and Strootman in January would be an ideal scenario.

He's painfully average. Doubt he'd even be going to the World Cup if everyone was fit for Holland so I'm not sure LvG really rates him anyway tbh. If he wasn't Dutch/didn't make that pass for RvP's goal no one would be talking about him.

You know it's gonna happen.

Who the feck needs new signings?

Yeah sure mate, Onwards and upwards towards 5th place.

Seriously though, our midfield is okay in terms of quantity, it's quality we lack. We need a defensive mid and a box to box player who'd both go straight into the first team. The likes of Blind and Clasie just aren't at that level, IMO.

I think linking us to dutch players was a safe bet from journos, If and a likely if the netherlands dont make it out of the world cup group stage, we will not be linked with any of them.

Yeah, I'll give you that he didn't really look anything great before he joined Roma but last season he was excellent for Roma, he was the heart of the team. When I saw him he always seemed to give his all for the team no matter what and that's something everyone really loves in a player. He will definitely answer a good deal of questions asked about our midfield, but we'll need somebody else, a true all-rounder to answer the other questions.

So with Van Gaal implying at the press conference he is preferring De Guzman over Clasie vs. Spain tomorrow, it means he rates a Swansea City player over Clasie in midfield.

I'd say it's fair to assume odds on us being interested in signing Clasie have dropped to less than 5%. Unless he will get a lucky chance at the World Cup and performs really well of course, by that time speculation would be acceptable again. Is there a transfer topic on De Guzman already?

I've not seen much of Clasie but I agree that looking at his place in the Dutch pecking order I can't see Van Gaal thinking he will be good enough for us.
What's the first choice midfield when everyone is fit?

Maybe he's just saying that to keep his price down. If he doesn't play much in the World Cup, Feyenoord can't hold United to ransom over his fee.

The funny thing is even De Guzman would definitely improve our midfield as it is

All the Swansea midfielders would. Even the one they sent to Sunderland on loan for the year.

It is not a question of improving our midfield. A few donkeys would do that. It is a question of getting a midfield good enough to win trophies. If LVG thinks de Guzman is better than Clasie then I can't imagine he would want Clasie at United.

To be fair, Fellaini (as much as he's slated) is probably one of those players that you could say 'improved our midfield'. He had some decent games, IMO looked better than Carrick, Cleverly and Fletcher at any stage of last season. That's not to say that we shouldn't bite the bullet and get rid though, we need a CM or two that's going to contribute to us winning league titles.

We shouldn't be signing players for the sake of it or the misguided notion that almost anyone would be an upgrade over what we currently have. A lot of people said that last summer and then we signed Fellaini. That transaction alone should've debunked the myth that we can't do worse than what we already have.

I know that. I wasn't saying we should go for any of them, I was just responding specifically to the post about De Guzman.

Not even funny, De Guzman is underrated I think. Very tidy player indeed.

Yeah he's alright, realistically he wouldn't be anything more than a back up for a CL team though. And yet he'd walk into our starting XI...

This talk of xyz getting into our midfield needs to stop. It's ridiculous.

Our midfield is not very good in comparison to the top teams and they were all shite last season (who wasn't?) but give me Carrick, Cleverley, Fellaini, Fletcher over any Swansea midfielder.

I don't think you realise how poor our cms are, I seriously doubt how much Carrick, Cleverley, Fellaini and Fletcher could improve Swansea's midfield and the style they play.

And I think you, like most, horrendously underrate our CM's.

Before the season started if anyone had said De Guzaman was better than any of our midfield they'd have been shot down and rightly so.

Cleverley would've been in Holland current starting eleven if he's a Dutch. Only Strootman and Sneijder are good enough for us.

I'm watching the Dutch play and thinking De Guzman would be a good signing for us, and he's Canadian ;)

This. Our midfield isn't United level, but neither is De Guzman.
