Jordan Henderson | New Athletic Interview: I strongly believe that me playing in Saudi Arabia is a positive thing

Can’t wait till the BBC interview him and ask him why he turned his back on the LGBT community.

Its a funny thought when you think it all the way to the end really. In the year of 2160 Hendo’s last line of spoiled brat scum heritage will make for a great anti-hero movie set in Saudi Arabia. Plot: his money dries up and he’s addicted to Louis Vuitton bags while he also finds out he’s bisexual.

Only Rob Schneider could pull that role off

I say he'd still laugh at the guy who can't use the 3 sea shells.

He’s done more damage to the cause he supported by being a vocal ally and then so publicly turning his back on it, than if he’d just said nothing at all and gone there for the money. Most people make career choices for the money, so no problems there. There’s nothing inherently wrong with being incredibly well paid. But the moment he so vociferously stood up for a cause, as a public figure of influence, he assumed a responsibility to be faithful to that cause. It’s one he took on voluntarily.

Doing what is tantamount to a 180 is morally irresponsible and it’s inevitable people will label him as a hypocritical betrayer. He’s seen the reactions all over the world to the mooted move, and he’s gone ahead and done it anyway, so it’s fair to say that the money was at a point that he didn’t care what people thought or what damage he did as a result.

That’s his prerogative, but I feel equally free to call him a weak willed cnut for it.

Lots of jealousy. His footballing peers must be extremely jealous and envy.

Henderson brings no stardom, no style, even no really assists/goals. Yet he is getting the big money.

Mainly because of his connections, or rather his friendship with Gerrard. Connections always matter for success, and Henderson is one lucky guy.

The Saudis, encouraged by Henderson's signing, execute 5 more gay children than they would. Henderson is assigned a xLGBT rating of -5
Hilarious. Fair play to you

700k per week is the price for him to turn his back.

Footballers aren't social activists, when it comes down to it, they will eventually agree to play for whoever gives them the most money. All these causes are just lip service forced in them by the governing bodies to make it look like something is being done.

Do the government and people in power actively go out of their way and turn down huge salaries to try and sort out cost of living, migration or join just stop oil? Nope, they prefer to continue to facilitate the sale of billions of pounds worth of weapons and munitions to SA so they can wreak havoc in other countries.

If Kaveh was offered 700k a week to spew shite on Saudi TV. I'm sure he wouldn't be long jumping ship.

Whatever. Doesn't make him any less of a hypocrite, and it's understandable that many groups of people are disappointed and hurt by this.

Silly post. Kaveh wasn't a spokesperson for LGBT+ groups and Henderson chose to become a social activist. You just wanted to post your own general thoughts even though they were irrelevant to the situation.

Singing You'll Never Walk Alone at Anfield isn't what makes him a hypocrite, it's actively going out of his way to pretend that he was really invested in the LGBTQI+ cause that does. Kaveh is rightfully criticizing him but using the wrong arguments to do so imo.

Yeah sorry, this is what I was referring to. I didn't see the Kaveh bit, I just find it so strange that people are defending him so staunchly - this doesn't make him the worst person in history, but it's definitely not a nice colour.

Why is it silly? Yeah, he's a hypocrite for going there. So what, why try and equate that to causes that no other footballer is publicly open about. Why try and link him with the cost of living, migration, just stop oil?

Jordan Henderson going there for 700k a week is really meaningless, when the government is aiding war by faciliting the sending of weapons to SA to drop on children in Yemen. But, Sky will never say that.

Looks like they greyed out the rainbow armband.

Ah if your criticism is mostly for Kaveh then fair enough.

Is there anything more Liverpool than being morally outraged by something until it suits you not to be? A fitting send off for captain Hendo.

real stroke of luck for them to be shipping Fabinho and Henderson for good money, definitely think Klopp would’ve continued playing both

Glad he's getting stick. Much deserved. FFS haven't these people got enough money?

Whatever about hypocrisy, I think we can all agree that this transfer goes to show how inflation works.

1. Trevor Francis (RIP) became the first £1m player in 1979. Now a 35 year old who was mediocre even in his prime costs 12 million.

2. Hendo is getting paid 700 grand per week. A couple of millennia ago, Saudi Arabia could have gotten him to sign a contract for 30 pieces of silver.

Game's gone mad Ted.

Being absolutely fair, plenty of Scousers are giving the traitor lots of stick. In fact, in this very thread, most of the Liverpool fans are explicitly condemning him. Certainly more than some of the United fans in this thread (the usual suspects), who are probably too busy lubing up for potential Qatari ownership to see anything wrong with Hendo selling out.

All these scousers who are criticising Henderson must also be really miffed with their Club for selling him for fee to Saudi's or the outrage is just reserved for players .

As a white rich male living in Europe its extremly easy speaking up for gay rights. I am not saying his feeling for this cause was not genuie, but as soon as they made it a little uncomfortable for him (by making him choose against a even bigger truckload of money) he folded.

Rich person beeing a hypocrite, what else is new?

Absolutely nothing controversial about this move. He is a football player moving clubs. Whatever views he has on any subject he probably still has them. But his life comes before any views on these subjects.

Shameless, and of course Henderson it's ok with this

700k a week will make him forget about it.
With all the fuss you would think that he is on a poster in Saudi promoting their anti-LGBT policies. Just because he has chosen to work in another country doesn’t mean he agrees with their policies and doesn’t mean he has withdrawn his support. People have short memories.

That's why you shouldn't get involved with politics and stuff if you're a famous football player. You just don't turn down 700k a week for a couple of years. He'll have some awkward questions to answer though.

One would think so. But the whole reason why Henderson got so much publicity in the first place is because not many people in those positions actually do.

But he's burnt quite a few bridges now in terms of work after retirement. Doesn't seem like he's the kind that goes into coaching and he's hardly charismatic enough to be on TV. This whole LGBTQ ally business was all that he had going for him off the pitch. Maybe it doesn't matter and he's just planning to sit and enjoy all this cash after retirement.
