Jonny Evans - What do we think?

Really need him back to partner someone at the back, no composure back there on the ball.

We miss him so much, he reads the game the best out of all our centre backs at the moment. On the other hand, Jones's judgement is poor (lack of CB experience) as is Vidic's (hasn't adapted to his decline in physical ability)

Back in training.

Hopefully that isn't our defensive pairing tomorrow. The Northern Irishman can play, but Rio is only useful in his car listening to classic R&B.

I wouldn't want someone who hasn't played football in more than a month to take on the ultra-slick Bayern forwards. No doubt, he has experience in crunch CL ties. I'd still not play him. At least Vidic and Jones will have some sort of idea for a partnership (though they've played very less together). Evans is slow-ish. Him vs Robben at LB could easily go sideways.

Glad he's back. Unless him or Carrick play CB, our ability to play out from the back is really hindered and imo forces us predictably onto the flanks more.

Yeah. Range of passing aside, Jonny's so much more willing to carry the ball forward and continue his run after releasing it. I would have expected more of this from Jones in his last few appearances but he's been disappointingly conservative in the opposition half. Although, to be fair to him, he might be under instructions not to get caught upfield because his defensive partner has no recovery pace whatsoever. A Jones-Evans combo could actually put the whole team much more on the front foot. Bring it on.

Definitely feel more comfortable with Evans over Vida for Bayern game because they are not going to be crossing the ball that much and we are more likely to retain a bit more possession with Evans. Hope he starts.

Get him fit and ready for the away leg if we are still in it. His confidence and distribution on the ball can be key as well as the ability to defend against a variety of forwards.

But as has been mentioned, its very risky to play a CB who has only just returned from quite a lengthy lay-off against Bayern.

Would love to se him back but probably have to agree with some that his fitness may be too big an issue. Return leg for sure.

Made some awful mistakes this year bizarrely. On his day one of the prems best CBs. Honestly can't think of anyone with the blend he has. Will be our most experienced defender going into next season and I will love it if he plays 38 games

Good to see him back in training. Not to sure I would want to see him starting against Bayern though due to the length of time he has been out for.

I'm glad to see he's back on training. He's going to be ready to play on April 1, but I don't think we can throw him in against Bayern Munich as he hasn't played football for quite a while. It's best if we go for a settled partnership (Vidic and Jones) rather than put Evans in and expect him to keep us solid.

We can't even risk playing him as a left back as he's not a world class man-marker and will be torn to shreds by Robben and even Shaqiri, IMO. However, he will need to be introduced into the first team to provide a more solid central defence and not be left out like Nani is.

Am I the only one who has never really taken to Jonny Evans?

On his day a fantastic player, came through our system, by all accounts a very down-to-Earth guy, everything about him points to the fact that I should absolutely love him.

For some reason I just don't. His tendency to pick up fairly regular injuries at the worst possible times, mixed with the fact that I'm not convinced he is first team material (for United) just makes me a little cold on him.

Of course I say this with my fingers crossed that I will look like an idiot in a years time.

He is a class act. Still young enough, in a year or two he will boss central defence against the best in the business

I don't know about bossing the central defence, per se, but he will provide composure, strength, and great quality to our central defence. He may worse, defensively, than Smalling and Jones (not by that much, though), but his on-the-ball skills, composure in defence, and his ability to read the game will make him a main man alongside Smalling, Jones, or a new central defender.

Definitely our most underrated player, would love to see him back for tonight's game.

Maybe boss was a bit vidicesque.. but I agree with you, his composure is something that will only get stronger as the years go on. Once he is one of the more mature/senior players in both England and Europe there wont be too many that will make him look silly

Only on the Caf could the consensus be to bring back a ball watching defender for his first game in months against Bayern.

Given the awful form our senior defenders rio and Vida have been in, I wouldn't complain. I know it is Jonny cannot keep a clean sheet evans but we are better off with him in our back 4 than vidic.

Hahahahaha, one season in the Champs League and the Liverfools are out in force. Typical sad act.

Its not a quote if you change what I said. Hope you enjoy watching Suarez playing for Real Madrid next year

He's good enough to be our starting eleven centre back and has the quality. The main problem is injuries slow down his development.

Very true. His two best season for us were 2008 and last season. When he managed to stay fit for a considerable time than usually.

Surprised nobody has bumped his thread already.. First game back from injury,he played well today.. One of the few bright spots along with DDG and Hernandez..

Really? I thought he was toss.
Got turned to easily for the shot that led to the stupid jones handball and constantly doubled up on a man, thus leaving his man free. He's just not a good defender.

Should have beaten Naismith to the ball rather than backtrack in the move leading to the Jones penalty.

Evans played well today, surprised he was subbed. For those saying he should have done better for the penalty, :wenger:

He was OK, I think. I still think he and Smalling can work.

Dunno why he came off, was calmest player in defence other than De Gea and looked fine. Good to have him back though. I think he's gonna be the main man at the back if he stays fit. Smalling/Jones have the potential to be better but he's clearly ahead of them atm. Smalling just doesn't have the ability on the ball or Jones the calmness.

I thought he did well. Especially just coming back from long injury. Very good defender I think.
