Would actually be very happy for him to stay and then instead try to sell Lindelof for several reasons: (1) Evans is better than Lindelof, (2) Lindelof can leave for fri next year, (3) the sale of lindelof would give us some additional needed cash for potential upgrades in defence

Aye, in that scenario keeping Evans and selling Lindelof is a no brainer decision.

Happy with that suggestion. If I could add one more line;

(4) sell Lindelof because he’s, well… Lindelof. You may have to find him first, he’s good at hide and seek. Him and McTominay play this game for days sometimes.

In discussions over a new contract.
Glad for him, he was good last season and has been able to surprisingly extend his career which looked almost over when Leicester got relegated. He should definitely have a secondary backup role with us next season but he can still do the job perfectly fine for 10-15 games a season. Who would have thought he'd still be playing here in 2025, and also one of these players we should have never let go in the first place as he was good enough to play for us all the time (unless his preference was to play regularly for smaller teams than be a backup here). We signed so many worse defenders for so much money after selling him to West Brom.

It’s probably a sign that Varane is the only CB leaving this summer. One in / One out

As much as I like him, we really should not prolong his contract and replace him with a much younger player

No problem with him signing again,as long as we sign a top replacement for varane. Next season then we have martinez, new signing, maguire, victor, willy and Evans, then next summer Evans retires, harry and victor leaving and we pick up one or two more depending on Shaw moving inside or not.

I see the argument here, but without him last season, we would have been fecked during the injury crisis. As a fourth-choice centre back he's still good enough and his experience can help bring through players like Kwambala.

I imagine it will be his last full season before moving into the coaching set up and we will see him mainly on the bench or in cup games.

But it's invaluable having players like Evans around because they're aware of the high standards the club had in the past and can transmit that. It's not like with Matic or Mata who stayed on too long but didn't have the genuine connection to the club that Carrington graduate would have.

No targets for GB's ire if Lindelof's gone. Who are you going to complain about in the match threads?

In a perfect world where we can make all the moves we need within one summer, maybe. But it's not the case.

What we should be aiming for is to make next season look like last season should have looked like for Evans: Playing the odd game here and there, not becoming almost a regular because we lost almost all other centerhalves.

Yep, I agree with the second post.

We've got so many other areas to address before we need to worry about the 4th and 5th choice CB's. Keep Evans and Kambwala for that. And Martinez as one of the first three. We definitely need at least one main CB signing. If we sign two, then that should be if we've managed to offload both Maguire and Lindelof.

I don’t think, financially - as well as keeping them happy - we can have two new main CB signings as well as Martinez, Maguire and Lindelof on the books. Evans and Kambwala can be cheaper 4th and 5th options - and Evans is a great player to have around the squad with his experience.

Exactly.

In a perfect world Evans can play 0 times next season and a) he'll have fulfilled a role and b) he'll not kick up a fuss.

As someone said in the Eriksen thread, with the Europa League now open to us next season it does throw a lifeline to a few of the squad players who you might have been tempted to think their United careers might be over. I think Evans had a good season for us (sadly Eriksen didn't) but i'd happy for a few of the oldies to stay for the Europa League fixtures and for when needed in the league.

Eriksen was barely used as a #10 this season and I still think he's good enough to be Bruno's backup. For some reason we him in that Mainoo / Mount role and expect him to press high and show recovery pace and get back on transition and he obviously looks extremely leggy when that happens. He also doesn't get a lot of set pieces (FKs, Corners etc.) despite being very good at them.

This is one of those players that would go to the Italian league, starts killing in the CL SF and everyone will be wondering why our rejects suddenly look so good.

Square pegs round holes all over the place in this side.

Lovely lad and all that, but you feel that we should have a youngster in his position in the pecking order.
Hope this isn't a sign that we're trying to skimp through without buying at least one quality centre back.

I like him. He’s very composed on the ball. Good in games where we have a lot of possession. Also if we are indeed going to go out and sign 3 or 4 young players then we need a few older heads to guide them in the dressing room. I don’t want the next crop to end up like Rashford Martial Depay Pogba Sancho and Lingard again. Spice boys. Evan’s is the only one in the group who’s won a PL.

Sounds horrendous.

Martinez is always and injur risk, Kambwala looks okayish.

This would very likely result in Maguire and Evans playing significant numbers of matches.

How do you work that out? He had one long term serious injury that he reinjured when he returned. You are saying he is always an injury risk as if he keeps getting different injuries constantly.

No problem with him being 4th / 5th choice. But keeping him means we have to offload Lindelof / Maguire and bring in some younger quality. We won't but we need to.

Best we can hope for will be Lindelof out (along with Varane) and two new CB's in

Which is what should be done, and I believe Maguire will want to be starting CB with the years he's got left so I wouldn't write that off.

He outperformed them last season. Use them to generate funds for the 2 CB signings we need to make and in an ideal situation he barely gets a look in next season. His role is to be backup and be a senior figure, and I think he can do that well for us.

Couldn't agree more, this would be the ideal scenario. Leaving us with Martinez, Evans and Kambwala + two new signings (something like Todibo and Yoro / Inacio) would be great.

His experience is really useful as a sub to close down games. He's always able to just slot in nicely.

Does this club ever learn? Why we offering a 36 year old a new contract. Taking a youngsters opportunity.

What are you on about? He will literally be our 5th choice CB. Ain't no self respecting youngster going to sit on the bench and play once in a blue moon when we need to rotate our CBs.

That's excellent squad planning. A leader, a model pro, academy graduate and a PL winner willing to sit on the bench for 95% of the season and play in case our entire back line gets injured again. Not that many players like him available these days

And how much wage is he on? Thought we was shipping out All the old ones and not good enough players.

You can’t go into a season with no experience around the dressing rooms and training pitches never mind on the pitch/bench

You're complaining about a guy who is in the rare category of being actually very good for us last season.

He is also a culture driver and someone who can mentor the younger players.

He's helpful in registration rules and makes up 1 of our 8 needed especially in Europe, when u21s need to have been at a club for 2 seasons to not be registered and in that sense he doesn't take Kambwala's place in either squad.

He is also only on £65k a week.

Depends what experience you’re talking about. Maguires experienced, so is lindelof. So is dalot. Shaw. You don’t have to be 40 years old to provide experience
