Really good player. At this rate we should consider collecting more former players, like Fred, Smalling, Blind, Miki, Welbeck

Not sure about Fred and Smalling, especially latter who's fallen in form this season, but most of those players listed could arguably upgrade us.

Blind - Crucial player for Girona who's seriously punching above their weight.
Welbeck - Solid squad player for De Zerbi's Brighton. (Keeps scoring against us )
Mkhitaryan - First team player for Serie A table toppers Inter.
(Bonus) Darmian - See above

I know right? My post was half-ironic because every player we were happy to let go seems to become class in a different environment..

Amazing how he's one of our best defenders this season.

Sign him for another year as 5th choice. If the first choice CBs do their jobs he won't feature anyway. If the first choice CBs do what they've been doing this year then we be glad we have him.

I'd sign him up for another year as 5th choice.

I doubt he's on large wages, and seems a good player to have around. He's played a lot more this season than a 5th choice CB should have tbh.

He has always been a good player plus he has a great mentality. He should've never left and he should've been our 3rd choice, he would've played tons

I'm thinking it's probably not a coincidence that Maguire looks a better player again with him around. Always thought he made him look better than he was at Leicester too. Great guy to have back at the club in my book.

Man Utd 2:0 Everton
One of our CBs today looked like a crocked mid 30s defender who has retirement on the horizon, and the other one was Jonny Evans. Excellent performance. Brought some much needed composure to an otherwise dodgy looking backline.

Selling him and Smalling in quick succession was up there with some of the worst decision making the club has made in the post Ferguson years.

God knows how much we have spent on CBs since, but aside from a perma-injured Martinez, they could and probably should have been mainstays of the first team for the last decade.

There's no reason not to do that. He could stay around for another year as an emergency CB until he pursues a coaching career which he could do here.

People lost their mind at the beginning of the season for picking Evans up for free... turned out to be a pretty good decision. Good game again. He shouldnt be a starter but when he does start he usually plays well.

Most reports have him at 60-65k. That's less than a fifth of what Varane is reportedly on (340-350k).

Varane was fine today and has been playing well recently?

I thought Varane looked shaky on the ball at times, especially in the second half. There was a 15-20 minute spell where he was losing possession a lot. Evans, on the other hand, looked composed throughout.

Remember when we let him go and kept the likes of Jones and Rojo? Good times.

Evans was pish. He was a walking disaster, scared of his own shadow. He needed ditching back then.

Outstanding today. I went with Onana, those who voted Jonny MOTM have a solid argument.

Yeah, Jones and Rojo were amazing to be fair.

Hes still got it. Objectively speaking he's better than a lot of CBs in the league even at say Chelsea. Reminds me of Thiago Silva of a coupe seasons ago in his positioning, organisation and leadership

From memory he had one bad season, and then we got rid of him before he had the chance to recover.

As somebody else said, the two defenders we sold (Evans and Smalling) would probably have been better to keep over every other defender we've signed in the last decade other than Martinez (and even that depends on him returning to form after his injuries).

Oh on the ball, yeah probably not the best, but the whole system looks to be causing that. He doesn’t look so bad with Martinez and Shaw playing. From a defensive point of view, he’s been quality.

Smalling was the strangest sale indeed. He had become rather reliable and of the lads on the books was the ideal partner for incoming Maguire.

I know what I’m saying can be interpreted multiple ways… but he’s hands down our signing of the season.
