He's already one of the best in the world.

Very good defender, but thats a bit premature...

One of the best young defenders? Sure.
One of the best in the world.. not yet. And the fact that you felt the need to add the 'for a young defender' bit would suggest you know that too.

He's been consistantly good all season. It's about time he's started receiving some praise.

It seems some have to work harder than others to get the praise they deserve.

Evans gad a very good game yesterday. I think he has been a martyr to his first season when he was fantastic. He has been unlucky with injuries which had stunted his growth as a player and also suffered from a hit in confidence last season which def had an impact on his performances, but of late, apart from the odd wee slip he has been very very good indeed, especially when you take into account his age. It is very easy to forget just how young he is.

Back to his form from a couple of seasons ago.

He's making Rio look like a weak link at the moment

We almost don't miss Vidic. That's how good he's been.

Rios been off form for a while but he was excellent yesterday. Evans on the otherhand looked nervous yesterday in the first half, couple times where he made a couple of poor decisions (one where he went to far out of position to try and challenge for a ball with Rafael) luckily no harm done. And Evans was out fault for the goal too, got his positioning wrong misjudging the header, which gave Rio no chance.

We've looked alot more vulnerable from set pieces without Vidic, and any suggestion that he is close to Vidic or even world class is idiotic.

Played well yesterday but should have headed the ball clear for their goal. Which has always been his weakness and the reason why we do miss vidic.

That said, he has massively improved as the season has progressed.

Evans is usually very composed - bringing the ball down instead of hoofing it, holding onto it even when players are around.

His wakness is not winning headers per se but his positioning at crosses. I still dont know how he managed to miss the header for Suarez goal or how he let the Crystal Palace forward get a header in front of him in the Carling Cup.

^ It was definitely yesterday TR. Get yourself to bed lad

After last seasons display I truly thought he was finished as far as being a Manchester united player was concerned. How wrong I was!

He's been fantastic this season. How lucky we are to have so many fantastic young defenders.

well hopefully you've learned something. our young ones are receiving flak for inconsistent performances when they're at a stage where they will not always play up to standard. the key is them getting the experience to minimize the errors. That's what Evans has done and he's come back alot more determined and confident. I was never in doubt about him.

Just got to learn to give these kids time.

Exactly; He is a quality player and will continue to improve. Him and Vida will be brilliant now Evans is having a run in the team

He is improving, but to be honest, I still don't see him making it here in the long term as a first team player. A spell of solid performances doesn't suddenly make him a world class player.

I can safely say that I always said that Evans is a pretty good defender and that we should be patient. He was good again yesterday except for that one missed header. If he can get more dominant in the air, he will be superb

The thing that goes against Evans is that he doesn't have the physical capablties of Smalling or Jones. He's not particularly quick and he's not strong and aggressive either, these attributes can help defenders to cover up flaws in their positioning but Evans doesn't really have that luxury.

Evans reads the game well though and he's also very mature for his age. I think I've also noticed much improvement in his distribution this season too. I have hope that he'll be our first choice CB in the future but it's not exactly set in stone. At the very least he'll continue to be a trustworthy, homegrown defender who can slot in whenever we have an injury.

Currently, he's a better centre half than Phil Jones. If Rio and Vidic were both out our best centre half pairing would be Smalling and Evans. He'll make it here, he's a good centre half and he's still young. He's as good, and probably better, than John O'Shea was/is, and he didn't have a bad career here.

Before when we used to play teams like Liverpool, they would make sure that our defence couldnt pass to our midfield, and as a result of that our defence would end up hoofing the ball the ball towards the strikers. and hence we lose possession; but i think with these new young defenders ie Evans, Smalling and Jones and even De Gea.. opposing teams have been unable to do it as we pass the ball around the back pretty good.. Think that is one place where we have made improvement from the Vidic/Rio era..

Well no one was particularly bothered when we got rid of Pique instead of him, that just shows with the right conditions players can really thrive. Jonny looked the part when he came through and was one of the key factors in our clean sheet record in 08/09 I think. He's an excellent defender and most importantly he's United to the bone, I think it's highly inaccurate to say he won't make it here in the long-term, we need players from our academy in and around the First Team.

A spell of solid performances is all you want from him though, we don't need world class back-up centre backs. Few if any teams have ever had world class back-up centre backs, just players who could come in and not cause a fuss. Evans is good for that.

Excellent distributor of the ball. Probably the best we have in defence.

Well you're a glass half full man aren't you. One of our promising young centre-backs is having a good run of form after a dip and you come out with that. Pointless. You're clearly someone who looks for the negative in things when they've got an opinion set in stone on something.

On the other side of things, Garth Crooks has him in his team of the week.

"CENTRE-BACK - JONNY EVANS, MANCHESTER UNITED

I never thought that Evans was a Manchester United player. That said, I have watched him steadily mature into a calm, dependable centre-half under Sir Alex Ferguson and he was outstanding in defence against Liverpool - particularly in the early exchanges when tensions were running high.

Did you know? Manchester United have won 83% of the 18 games Evans has appeared in this season and just 43% of the seven he has missed."

I'm not denying that he's shown a lot of improvement lately, but some people here are being too quick to change their mind and suddenly think that he's destined to be a top defender. Who knows, he could surprise us and make the first team here, but it could also happen to be that his performances lately have been a spell of good form for him.

Looking at his whole United career to date, don't you think it's much more likely that his problems last season were a spell of poor form?
