I thought he was terrific. He was as secure as we could imagine with his tackling and positioning. He's also underrated as a long range passer. He can definitely find his man these days.

Still can't believe he hasn't scored yet. He's had good chances.

I remember him having one disallowed I think in a european game, can't rememeber who against but remember thinking it was very harsh.

He will never score

fecking hell, Evans.

How good was that? One of many who's answered his critics lately. Long may it continue.

Hope this shows that the thing he lacks is not physicality, but confidence, concentration and aggression. fecking pissed on Helguson all game long. Great partnership with Rio. Assured as ever on the ball. Great stuff, more of it, please!

superb today

Reading of the game/interceptions great as usual. Added dominance in the air, consistency to his passing (long range and short range) and went on a nice little run from the back as well.

Great to see Jonny, thats the Evans i love. keep it up

I don't want to seem like I'm getting too carried away, but that, for me, could be one of his best performances in a United Shirt. He was everywhere today, played their forwards off the park and caused alot of problems from set-pieces.

He did it with style too, never seemed under pressure, stayed cool, did the simple things right and read the game very well. Mercurial is the word I want to use for Johnny today.

Agree! And a improved self confidence and the knowledge that his place in the starting line up is safe

Very solid. Aerially he was very good also (seems to come into stick for that). Perfect timing for him stepping up really with the Vidic situation.

He scored a goal against Blackburn in the Premier League that was disallowed. Very harsh decision.

Gutted for him and us that he couldn't score today. That would have improved his confidence even further after now to very good back to back performances. I like his understanding with both Rio and Evra.

Dare I say it, but we have the makings of an excellent and settled back 4, barring no more crazy long term injuries at the back. If Evans can get his form back and even raise it to get closer to hi full potential, Maybe we can just about get away with the loss of Vidic. It would be our greatest achievement, PL wise since 2006.

Very good today, continuing his good run of recent form.

Could have had a hat-trick, pity he couldn't stick that header in.

If he plays like this, he won't have any critics left. That was as monstrous a performance as I've seen from a CB this season.

"monstrous" is rather OTT :)

Evans played very well so should be commended, but yes he shouldn't get as much criticism as he does.

I'm more worried about the chap at left back!

But you are a bit carried away. He had much better performances along Vidic 2 seasons ago, especially the one against Chelsea comes to mind where he had Drogba completely in his pockt

He needs to play like that consistently then he won't have any critics. He was excellent today, but hes made far too many mistakes this season which made him a liability. It looks like he'll be a regular as Vidic is out, so hopefully he can get some consistency in his game, didn't put a foot wrong today.

I think the injury to Vidic has given him a kick up the arse with the realisation that he could stamp his name down as first choice for the next year. Nice to see, and his passing is deceptively good.

He looks great when he plays with confidence and react quickly, when he hesitates he can look poor. But the run of games was great for him during VDSs record breaking run of goalless minutes, wonderful to see him in such good form.

How many mistakes? Name and shame.

The only mistake that's cost us what in the City game.

Jones, Smalling, and Rio has done as many, if not more mistakes than him.

Could be a big day for him. A standout performance from himself and Rio. Looked a proper partnership. An extended run on the horizon, Jones cementing himself in centre-mid. There can't be one of his doubters on here that didn't watch him today and remember what a player he can be. No good people (myself included) wittering on about 2 years ago, he needed a day like that, dominant, composed, in control. Pleased for him, pleased for us. All feels different this evening, doesn't it? A bit of hope.

Well, that much is obvious. I'll be delighted if he continues playing like this, but his biggest problem remains despite good performances recently.

I've always said that he is prone to mistakes, not because he lacks concentration, like Rio in his younger years, but because he lacks exceptional physical qualities in any area to help him out when he finds himself in trouble. Rio has always been very quick which has helped him out in those situations where he's read the game wrongly or fecked up otherwise. Vidic is very strong which has helped him get out of situations by outmuscling the attacker and using his body to prevent a quicker player to get past him, whereas Evans is pretty good in both respects but will be beaten by a striker who is either very quick or very strong and will have to resort to slide tackling/shirt tugging.

This is obviously a load of personal opinions, but those are my reasons for believing that he'll be our long-term third choice CB (assuming that Jones isn't converted to a midfielder on a permanent basis).

Would bulking up help him a little? I still can't help but notice how scrawny he is, though he does have height. Him building up a ronaldo type physique would make him a tougher player maybe?

Good observation Makki and I think you are spot on. Btw Jones progress as a midfielder is impressing. Could be his future position if he continue like this.

Did well yesterday but then the opposition were quite shit.

Hope he continues performing like this though.

Could still be our future first team player.

I don't buy this idea about Vidic being freakishly string. Sol Cambell and Micah Richards are freakishly strong. Vidic is actually quite skinny. Similar build to evans actually.

Size and strengths don't go hand in hand, you probably know the density theory. Vidic combined strength will and determination, altogether it makes him difficult to outmuscle. I think it's obvious that Evans lacks pure muscle power. He "did" Drogba once but that's about it. I can't recall another game where he shine with his power and outmuscle someone. Can you? If he upgrade his strength, especially his upper body he will IMO become a better defender, don't you think?

Vidic is taller, more aggressive and has a better spring. Evans can't make himself taller but he can work at matching Vidic in these other attributes, just like he can work on every other aspect of his game.

My point stands that Vidic has never been a defender that relies on being physically stronger than his opponent. Which also applies to Evans. People put far too much emphasis on players needing to "bulk up" IMO.
