Evans needs to learn to concentrate througout the game. The lack of concentration is what catches him out and he does stupid things like that against City.

This is true. But at least he knows what he's supposed to be doing.

Jones and Smalling, which is to be expected, let their inexperience shine through in their positioning and decisions, while Rio's gone spastic, and Vidic alternates between being depressed, being suspended, and being injured.

Theres so many things wrong with this post I dont know where to start!

First off, not ready to play big games? I'd suggest you go back and look at the records in the big games that he has actually played in.

Secondly, not that good at passing? Christ, did you even watch the match? I think he gave the ball away once. I dont know where this has come from, but im reading it more, and im thinking do these people actually have eyes of their own, or are they taking some other muppets word as gospel?

the problem is his mistake have undo all his good work in the team, its very frustrating.

For those who have decided he's not good enough to play "big games", his record is quite interesting

According to THE WEBSITE OF DREAMS - MAIN MENU he has played 84 matches to date in the first team, 12 of which have been in the Champions League.

Out of those, he has yet to be on the losing side.

Villareal 0-0 & 0-0
Rangers 1-0
AC Milan 3-2
Benfica 1-1
CSKA Moscow 3-3
Celtic 3-0
Inter Milan 0-0
Porto 2-2
Roma 1-1
Schalke 4-1

In domestic competition he's lined up against Chelsea 6 times now, Arsenal 3 times, Liverpool 2 times, Spurs 3 times.

Record versus Chelsea
21/09/08 - 1-1 draw
11/01/09 - 3-0 win
09/08/09 - 2-2 draw
08/11/09 - 0-1 defeat
08/08/10 - 3-1 win
18/09/11 - 3-1 win

Record versus Arsenal
29/04/09 - 1-0 win (came on as a sub)
31/01/10 - 3-1 win
28/08/11 - 8-2 win

Record versus Liverpool
19/09/10 - 3-2 win
09/01/11 - 1-0 win

Record versus Spurs
01/03/09 - 0-0 draw
24/04/10 - 3-1 win
22/08/11 - 3-0 win

Not physical enough? Yet he's lined up against Bolton 6 times, recording 5 wins and 1 draw. (1-0, 2-1, 4-0, 2-2, 1-0, 5-0)

He also made his international debut for NI versus Spain in a world cup qualifying match. His team won 3-2, in which he had a stormer playing LB

I don't really rate him, I think he is an average defender who is prone to mistake from time to time, and I honestly think O'Shea and Brown were better defenders. But he is calm and mature than most other for his age, which is a plus.

I've just noticed that a few of you peeps praising Jonny Evans are folk from Northern Ireland - I hope you're not letting that cloud your judgement?

Serious question for the Evans fanatics: Do you class him as a first choice centre back? Or is Rio and Vidic still your preferred pairing when everyone is fit/not suspended?

hes 23 ffs. Remember Rio at 23?

I like how RedDevilCanuck said when Jones and Smalling feck up (which has been pretty often, mind you), he doesn't care. That's the logic of the anti-Evans brigade. Wow.
eh? I am struggling to think of one time they have fecked up let alone one of the many 'pretty often' times.

a couple of posts from the newbies

That's it though he goes through these spells and then does something stupid, i for one feel more comfortable seeing Jones Smalling and Vidic in team ahead of him, just put it this way, would he get in Liverpool's, City's, Chelsea's, Madrid's, Bayern's or Barcelona's defence? I'd say no- so if he is not good enough for them he is not good enough for us. I may get slated but it's plainly obvious for me. The same could be said about a few of our squad to be honest. At a strech he is probably better than Skrtel, but i'd even put that bleeding Klingon at Eastlands ahead of him.

Change that to QPR, Swansea, Bristol, Oldham, Dijon, Hercules or the Mighty Ducks and the answer will still be no.

clap clap, SupaRubz wins the idiot of the year award

I had a bit of a knee jerk yesterday because my head was fecked with what went on against that lot.

I don't think Evans is a bad player at all but I do think he fecked it big time re: the sending off. It was very poor defending in not only allowing Ballotelli get goal side but also by managing to lose the ball and then commit the red card offence.

I think it was a lack of concentration or summat because normally, I'm not nervous when Evans plays. Anyway, shit happens, we got twatted big time. It's time to roll up the sleeves and show everyone what we're made of.

At 24, Rio was a beast at a World Cup.

But it'd be unfair to compare Evans to Ferdinand, as the latter is England's most talented natural defender since Bobby Moore, really. Evans can only dream of that type of talent.

V. true got my dates mixed up a tad!

Point remains hes still a young defender learning his trade at the highest level, which is never easy given the spot light...

Some of you are going over the top. Possibly letting last week cloud your judgement.

Apart from one moment when he gave the ball away let Rodwell shoot, he was good.

He was good today, very good bar two spastic moments. Both due to him trying to overplay it.

A lot of simpletons on here. Other than that silly blind pass he was faultless. Good defensive performance as a whole.

Was ok, apart from those two moments, but those are what can cost you a goal and a game sometimes.. but Smalling does make mistakes too and he doesn't get blasted for it.. I think he needs to get a good error free game or two under his belt and then he will be fine.

It's funny because Evra gave away the ball to Rodwell in the first half and he jogged back casually whilst Evans bust a gut to try and stop Rodwell getting a shot off but Evans gets much more criticism. How many times did Jonny get turnt today? How many times did he allow an Everton attacker get in behind him? He had 2 stupid moments because he tried to overplay it, he'll learn from that he's only 23 I think. The lack of support for such a young player, especially one who's come through the youth team is extremely disheartening for me.

He's just one of those players that can never win. Even with a good performance

He was shit. Like he always is.

Sell him

Evans wasn't very good. Again.

You lot must have been watching a different game to me; he played well. Some fantastic blocks that massively took the pressure of De Gea. Is Evans going to become the new O'Shea now? Why do we give our own academy players such a rough ride?

Because they're not mega-buck sexy foreign big name signings and some of this lot are unable to appreciate them.

Thankfully I wasn't in some parallel universe.

The stick he was getting in the matchday thread was ridiculous considering he actually played well.

Played well and bounced back from the feck-up last week. No complaints from my side... helped a lot by Vidic being back though. The both of them are very solid as a pairing.

He was out muscled a few times in the air during the first half that could easily have cost us and made a couple of stupid decisions in the second half. There is always a mistake/goal in him and there lies the problem.

What was Vidic like at age 23?

Don't really remember him being out muscled at all, he doesn't make nervous at all, I never felt at any point in that match we were going to concede. He made two errors from overplaying it but he still didn't misplace as many passes as Vidic according to the Guardian Chalkboards.

Every player makes mistakes, some times they go unnoticed others are really obvious. Bruce and Pallister were always making them, it's then boils down to where the mistake is and if it can be covered which 9 times out of 10 it is.

I've not watched the game, but listened, and apart from a couple of situations it sounded as if he played well. He played very well against Liverpool the other week, his first half against City was good. His form has been good of late, just one error, and everyone has lined up to hang, draw and quarter him for it. Yes it was a costly error, but we can't go back and change that now, others were to blame as well last weekend, not just Evans.

I don't know tbh but a better comparison would be Rio who was light years ahead. Chris Smalling is already better as is Jones at 19

You seem to have the idea that all central defenders reach their peak by age 23. I don't agree, and Vidic is proof, but I'm open to discussion.

And yet SAF is picking Evans ahead of them.

I don't think you saw much of Rio's younger years - his concentration was all over the place, he was notorious for lacking it in games and it meant it took him forever to break into the England team. Hard to believe now but true.

Everyone develops at different rates, Jonny has better tactical awareness than both Jones and Smalling, Smalling is the better all round package of the three, whilst Jones is probably the most talented especially physically but at the moment I'd say Jonny is a better defender than Jones.

A very good squad player. Not quite good enough to command a regular spot at centre back for a club like United at this stage of his career. Things can change in the future though (In other words i'm not writing him off just yet).

Very true, it's why I think a lot of big clubs passed on him for as long as they did (he'd been on the scene about 4 years at that time) before Leeds came in with their offer.

Liverpool had the chance to sign him during Houllier's first full season but he thought he was too much of a risk at the time for the price West Ham were asking.

I think his selection today was a vote of confidence from the manager - still an average defender

Maybe if we all say we don't need a midfielder fergie will buy one to prove us wrong
