Jonny Evans | 2011/12 Performances

At least I'm crying about an opposition player unlike you whose the concept of accurately criticizing a United player is clearly lost on.

Whats the point of posting from a triple layer of red tinted specs? You're always going to be wrong with your extreme bias towards your own players.

Try being objective and judge players on the same basis

To criticise either of our center backs after today's performance will be just nit picking.

While we are at it let's also whine about Vidic's aimless long balls to no one at a time when we were struggling to have any sort of possession in the game. That clearly is a major concern than being a rock at the back.

In what way I haven't been objective about Bale then ? There was a question in his thread about a straight swap with Nani and I was all for it, Bale is better than him and his potential is even bigger. He's still a fecking cheat though.
That's about as objective as it can get when rating Gareth Bale.
Compare that with your Evans and his 'almost-conceded-from-his-mistake' stance in terms of objectivity.

It doesnt matter if it costs, its still a mistake. But rest assured if he ponces about like that against Real Madrid he's unlikely to get away with it like today

I'm interested to see how Evans copes against Real. It will be a good measure of how far he has come, and also how far he can go.

Ferguson has trusted him to start for about a year now, it will be interesting to see if he trusts him against Los Blancos should Ferdinand & Vidic both be fit. If he does trust him then I hope Jonny can repay the immense faith.

As for today I thought he was pretty solid, although I don't think he is at his best without Rio alongside him.

He had a pretty good game today except 1/2 instances. Was helped by Vidic in terms of Physicality aspect no doubt.

I think/hope he will be fine against Madrid... But I do worry like always that he'll have that mistake in him or that terrible off day he has in him. If he just puts in his general level of performance hopefully he'll come through it well

But thats if he isnt being an idiot taking chances on the touchline when he doesnt need to. The same goes for any of our defenders against Madrid. Today it led to a corner from which the opponents hit the bar, another day the ball could stay alive and we could be punished in open play or from the corner. We've seen similar nonsense cost us from the likes of Neville trying to be clever in the past.

Its Evans you cant seem to be objective about.

Do you expect footballers to go through a game without a mistake?

I ask because I've noticed this quite a lot on this forum, every game, incident and mistake is analysed to death.

Like you say, Neville has done it in the past, I've seen Rio, Vidic, Bruce and Pallister all make multiple mistakes.

I'm not sure what you expect from a defender.

When a defender makes that mistake I'll always make a comment about it. I expect them not to take stupid chances

Gary Neville trying to be clever on a football field was always going to end badly. And you are right....against Madrid it will be punished. Concentration and decision making need to be absolutely spot on.

Pick a different defender, any defender, the next time you watch a game, they'll make numerous mistakes. This isn't anything new nor exclusive to Evans.

Its Evans you cant seem to be objective about.

How is that ? Evans is a very good young center back who is (big fecking scoop coming up) still prone to make mistakes like any other young player. He made and will keep on making them until he progressively irons them out of his game as he gets older. However there is a lot more positive elements about his game than worrying ones.
If that's not objective enough for you then I'm sorry

Was in top form today. No mistakes and handled both long and lukaku very well. Of course he had plenty of help from vida but hopefully Jonny can continue this kind of performance.

Thought he was man of the match today, think based on today we should be making him and vidic partners whenever possible.

Can't understand why someone would choose to highlight a tiny little mistake over an all round great performance, but then some people just are spoilt and seem to expect perfection.

Changing my underwear after he dived to try and win a freekick but instead gave away a corner for no reason from which West Brom hit the bar and probably should have scored

Nah, thats being incredibly harsh.

1. Giving away a corner isn't what costs you a goal. Shit defending from a set-piece is what costs you the goal. You concede stupid corners and free kicks in every game... it's how you defend them is what matters.

2. It was a clear foul on Smalling. So they didn't nearly score at all... in fact, we were never in danger of conceding from this corner. So really, all Evans did was concede a corner... like I said, not the biggest crime in the world.

Some people would say his mistake was trying to be clever and not just putting the ball out of play anyway. Even if it was for a corner.

But thats it isn't it? It's a corner. WBA still have a lot to do from that point to actually socre, and if we defend the situation correctly (which we did) there isn't a problem.

Evans tried something, it didn't work and thus it was a poor decision, but thats about it. Hardly something worth lambasting him for though.

There are people who think he's not good enough nor will ever be. They will come up with every little shit he fecked up, week in week out.

When did Evans get so fast?

Its never been a feature of his game I'd noticed before, but feck me, when he gets motoring he's like a bullet!

fecker! You beat me to it. I always thought he was just a tad too slow - today he was blistering. Kone isn't slow, but he had no chance!

He looks like our fastest player out there! Someone get him out of the stadium before the piss test guy arrives.

How the feck did he managed to outrun Kone for that tackle?

Excellent half by him. Will take one minor mistake though and Ekeke will analyse it for five days.

I was expecting this thread to have been bumped with a comment about it when I came in!

He just totally destroyed him for pace, where on earth did that come from!?

I thought my stream was deceiving me, couldn't believe it was Evans who got back as he never seemed the fastest defender.

Another solid game from him so far.

No idea - but I read somewhere from someone who had played with him that he was so determined to improve on areas where he lagged behind others. In the pace department, Smalling and Jones has always had the upper hand. Maybe he has worked on his pace a lot?

It's gonna be hard to even mention a mistake 'that could have led' to a goal from him.As with everyone on the team, he was fantastic

Don't know about that. He misplaced a pass in 53rd minute.

Impressive recovery speed when they had a break down our left in the first half, all round very composed display.

Competition for places has done a lot for Jonny, I think, there were times when he seemed to glide through games before Smalling and Jones started pressing him for a place. He keeps concentration much better than he used to and has an intensity about his play, even though he's still a calm temperament. It's such a great sight to see a defender come out of nowhere and dispossess a striker and then stride out with the ball purposefully. Evans has that I think, so does Smalling, and Rio has been the master of it for years.

He was excellent today.

So erm..... is he left footed or what? I always thought he was right footed primarily but just very comfortable on his left. I'm now thinking it's the other way around.

He played a bit at left-back earlier in his career, suggesting some level of proficiency with the left foot. But yeah some of his long passes with the right are beautifully shaped.
