Jonny Evans | 2011/12 Performances

Rio wasn't at the races at all today (again).

Johnny's not good enough to cover for his defensive partner AND the midfield.

I like the idea of him and Smalling as a partnership, but it wont happen consistently anytime soon.

And let's not pretend Smalling wasn't solely responsible for the third goal. Shocking defending to let Obertan (of all people) in from a throw in. Along with De Gea the biggest personal mistake from all our defenders today.

What I'm saying is defenders will make mistakes. If your team is not organized enough to cover for players occasionally making mistakes then you're gonna let in goals.

If your defenders aren't playing well enough to cover for other players making mistakes, and are vulnerable due to the rest of the team being poorly organized/set up (no midfield) then this season happens.

I don't think Vidic and Rio in their primes would have relished having Gareth Bale running at them one v one centrally because we have no midfield. And it's difficult to stop a goal when an opposition winger is allowed to burst unchallenged into the box full pelt while players are arriving behind your back.

Having said that, Evans has played poorly at times this season, notably these last couple of matches. He's still been our best defender except for Rafael.

Yeah I think our letting goals in has been at least as much to do with midfield as the defence.

Yeah I agree, as a team we've been poor defensively, people haven't tracked well either in open play or at set pieces. Even a lack of really capitalising on all our chances has contributes because it gives encouragement to the other team. There's been definite failings in defence but it's not just the centrebacks or any specific person.

Good thing is that I wouldn't say it's a fundamental weakness in the team or individual players but simply a lot of sloppyness/lack of concentration and you'd assume it'll get ironed out eventually.

Defensively, he's been our best defender full stop. Offensively Rafael's been better and probably Evra overall too. But they are full-backs.

He's been poor for three games, but today's errors were spread across the defence.

Yeah I thought his only real shocker this season was away to Reading.

He was a bit clumsy on the second goal today and I'll have it down as a mistake but it should have been offside so it's difficult to crucify him for it.

Also I noticed his passing was a bit nervous and sloppy today, more so than usual, but aside from that he did fine. In a fecking circus.

Not the best of games by their CB today. Rio more so than Evans I thought. Evans popped up in the right place to get his goal and hopefully he keeps making a habit of it for the rest of the season. I'm not going to blame him to much for the Own Goal, the newcastle striker was pulling him and interfering with play so should have been called offside I thought. He probably could have done better with putting it away from goals though.

The belief that he will score from set pieces is what has changed. Same with Evra, who I think admitted as much this week. That's what happens when you get quality delivery in.

Unfortunately, that's not saying much, when we concede as much as we do (~1.5 goals a game).

So we agree that except when it isn't the goalie's responsibility that a game can be won or lost in attack, midfield or defense? Glad we sorted that one out.

You're bumping for this and you forget his entire performance ????

Changing my underwear after he dived to try and win a freekick but instead gave away a corner for no reason from which West Brom hit the bar and probably should have scored

How about all the times he threw himself to block whereas the WBA were in dangerous shooting positions then ? I find it extremely sad that the first thing you did when bumping the thread was criticizing him.

Because it almost cost us a point till RVP came on and did RVP. The team defended well, especially Vidic.

Thought Evans and Vidic played well though both full backs were less than convincing.

'Almost' indeed  we got a clean sheet in a long time.He contributed to it as much as it hurts you, it's the truth

Of course he contributed, he's part of the defence I praised.

Doesnt change that he almost undid all our good work until that point with something ridiculous.

Had a good game but like Ekeke mentioned had that one stupid moment that could cost us.

Bet you were just waiting whole game to find one thing to tear down what was a very good performance. Even then the moment you are using is bit of a reach. It was a corner, not a penalty or a freekick or a sending off.

Smalling is not a right back, he gets turned far too easy. Likewise for Evra these days. I hope that we bring Baines in, with Vida back and him at left back I can assure you that we would concede far far less.

Rightly blame him when he makes a costly mistake. It was also a corner ffs , not like an intercepted back pass.

Its okay Johnny Evans fanclub. You can admit he's not superman now and again

He made a mistake alright but you're getting yourself even more embarassing now

MaCauley fouled him you Ihni binni dimi diniwiny anitaime!

It was given as a foul by the referee.

It doesnt matter if it costs, its still a mistake. But rest assured if he ponces about like that against Real Madrid he's unlikely to get away with it like today

Doubt Pepe would do any differently in that situation except commit more to the dive.

Seems you are the one that expects perfection seeing as one nothing thing is what you've come to tell us almost cost us the game.

I mean in that respect Smalling OMG had a shocker with the number of times something could have happened. Wowsers

Why wait Real Madrid when you're out there scrutinizing every single one of his moves apparently ? You're really sad Ekeke, not gonna bother with this anymore.

So Madrid are going to score from every corner. Better let the players know.

Smalling is a fairly shit right back with small experience there. Evans is a good CB with lots of experience there. Smalling made plenty of mistakes but few in such dangerous areas that were mostly by his own design. But hes still a fairly shit right back

mistake from Evans? Harsh, its not every game

Actually, every player makes mistakes in every game- mostly minor ones, sometimes major ones you get away with, sometimes major ones that cost your side.

He was great today and is our best partner for Vidic. Deal with it.
