Jonny Evans | 2011/12 Performances

One of the big negative points from the game his injury. He and Rio were very much in control before Evans had to go off. Hopefully it is just a short term injury and nothing major.

At least we have Smalling fit again and looking good to set in now.

Was getting fairly unsettled by the news of Vida returning which would've meant that all our central defenders are fit. Good to see that our luck didn't disappointed me and looks like now Evans has an hammy problem and apparently Buttner is hurt in the Reserves Match. Everything is back to normal again.

Which greek god reigns over injuries? We obviously need to find a goat or a few doves to placate the moody bastard. Our players are getting picked off like survivors in a zombie movie.

We'll miss his distribution from the back more than his defending. Not that he's not a good defender, he is, but Smalling is pretty good there too. However, distribution wise, Evans is so much better than any of our central defenders it's not even funny.

Ordinarily, this would be a big loss for us. But Smalling looks even better than Evans...and Vidic, we are led to believe at least, is set to return very soon. You really can't do a whole lot better than Vidic and Smalling at the helm in front of De Gea.

Still, I feel for Jonny. He's a warrior who would happily swallow shattered glass if Fergie asked him to.

does he? he is clearly a very talented young defender but I don't think he has done close to enough to say he is better than Evans. Maybe one day but think it will be close between them 2 both are great talents but at this moment in time I would say Evans is comfortably ahead of Smalling.

Smalling doesn't make the same kind, or number, of bonehead mistakes Evans does.

That said, you will note I put Evans in my "Manchester XI". Yet on pure ability and athleticism Smalling is ahead of Evans already.

So Smalling makes lesser mistakes, is more talented and athleticism beats Evans and yet you'll pick Evans over him?

Evans > Smalling in terms of ability though.

Smalling made less mistakes because he played less games than Evans...

Smalling made less mistakes because he played less games than Evans...

Yes. Easy to avoid mistakes when you've barely actually played.

They're pretty close for me, and have brilliantly complementary skillsets. But Evans is ahead at the moment. Not Smalling's fault - Evans, after all, is older and has played a lot more football.

Smalling's mistakes are getting overlooked, partly because he was playing non-league football not so long ago and partly because of the irrational hatred towards Evans.

That saying he doesn't make many mistakes obviously.

We'll have to get used to these pointless comparisons between Evans and Smalling just like Rio and Vidic used to be.I am personally very happy to have these young CBs learning from the best and I trust them to form a great partnership in the near future for many years at United

Smalling made costly errors last year, Kompany's goal and Basel's 2nd goal off the top of my head come straight to mind. Young defenders make mistakes.

Leadership is a big part of any defensive partnership, Evan's is well ahead in that respect. Name a defender that doesnt make "bone head mistakes" ? Form is a fact of life. Look at Kompany.

It's sad that Evans has to continually prove himself on the CAF. He's only ever one mistake away from being shite again...

I rate him very highly indeed. I've said on a number of occasions that it will be him and Smalling as a partnership for the middle term at least.

Just think what another 4 or 5 years will do for him and he'll be peaking then. The fact he has already had 5 seasons is a testament to his ability and potential.

The best thing about him and Evans is definitely their complimentary skillsets. Smalling for the strength and aerial ability as well as solid tackling. Evans for composure and calm stability with great vision and passing from the back. They are both good already and will only improve considering how young they are and none of them anywhere close to being dragged down by ageing. They will be our new Vidic / Rio partnership in the future.

We have some fabulous young defenders coming through, it's a positive that the likes of Rafael and Evans are stepping up whilst Rio ages and Vidic battles injury issues.

"Shite" no, but his mistakes should not be completely overlooked. Still, there's no question he's been very solid for us this season. But Evans has got find a way to eradicate the bonehead mistakes from his game. Just one is enough to be punished.

It's not fair being a defender, where the mistakes are more readily remembered than 89 minutes of brilliant play. But that's part of the bargain if you want to be a defender for a massive club like United.

The only mistake Evans consistently makes is diving in from behind when he thinks the ball's there to be won. He really needs to stamp that out, so to speak.

Other than that, I don't think he makes more errors than Rio did when he was the same age, the year he joined United.

I think in fairness to Ruud if he said what he said 6 months ago no one would have pulled him up on it as there was so much genuine Evans hate in this thread. Now someone saying they would pick Smalling over him is getting a reaction and that's telling you how much Evans has silenced his critics this season.

I couldn't be happier with our two young centrehalfs. Both British/NIish and both love to play for the club. We'll develop these lads for our own uses!!

Signs a new deal till 2016. His old deal would've ended in 2014.

Deserved extension for him really.

Great news. What he said about the club was nice too.

From whoscored.com: Since the start of last season, Man Utd have won 84.2% of the PL games that Evans has started, compared to 58.8% without him
