Joey Barton - ex manager - wannabe podcaster

Not a big fan of women’s pundits or commentators in all honesty but that’s where it ends I don’t have a deep opinion on it I just don’t think they’re very good

/shrug

Remember that phase he had where he tried to brand himself as a ***********? Good few years ago now.

It was funny.

He is having quite the public meltdown isn't he... I hope he calms down soon before he does himself, or worse, someone else some physical damage.

He's utter scum. If he didn't become a footballer, I'm guessing he would be behind bars, for one reason or another.

Being a footballer didn't even stop him from having a stint behind bars, and the fact he'll quite shamelessly describe the vile crime his brother committed as "a scrap" makes me think you're right in assuming he'd be locked up for something quite serious himself had he not been picked up as a footballer.

Who is qualified? Jenas? For me it just seems that he is afraid of women for some reason.

Is this some kind of meltdown? I have no idea what he is talking about?

It's a grift to get people listening to his podcast, since he is pretty much blacklisted from TV work now due to his comments about his brother.

He's picked an easy target to rile up the Neanderthals like him, whilst not pushing it by touching subjects he's even more likely to get burned for.

Like some of the male pundits and commentators are any better. Players who never achieved anything and have never coached or managed a club but speak as if there opinion matters. Some of the female pundits are a lot more knowledgeable, articulate and factually correct than a lot of the male ones. Gender doesn’t make you a good or bad pundit.

Yeah but he's wearing those fancy round glasses.

All I can think of when I see him with those glasses:

This is just another attempt of his to remain in the public eye. Watch him join 'I'm a Celeb' in the coming years

It dosen't really help him. You can throw anything to get some attention. However, people will just wonder what is wrong with this guy and move on. I wonder who would want to listen to his podcast and for what reasons.

Oh there are plenty of people out there, and on here too for that matter, who will tune in now he's said "what everyone is thinking". Something...something...silenced majority and all that.

Besides, after the other day he has no choice. The only weird thing about this is there's some who clearly can't see this for exactly what it is. But then those are the kind of people who fall for this sort of crap all the time.

Got to admire a man who’s so pedantic about his Disney songs :)

Always! ;)

Always! ;)

Should have a look at the YouTube comments.

Barton is an utter gowl, he's just trying to be controversial for the sake of it. He shouldn't be given any attention whatsoever.

I don’t think ‘authority’ means much here. Much more important to be smart and articulate. A smart, articulate female ex pro will be infinitely better as a pundit than an inarticulate, dumb male ex pro. So long as they’re hiring pundits purely on their merits as pundits then this isn’t a problem. However there’s a good chance this isn’t a meritocracy. Which is an issue for pundits of both genders.

Yes, I agree. There shouldnt be inarticulate male ex players in these roles - and there are. Too many. Sturridge the worst of all. But there have been about 4500 premier league players. I just believe that out of the more articulate and insightful ones that do exist, plenty of them probably also harbour ambitions of post playing career punditry, and certainly enough to occupy the main punditry positions. I think if barton was a smarter person he'd be able to arrive at a more nuanced opinion.

People need to try again: There can be terrible male pundits on television (many of them get brutal stick), but their presence doesn't qualify female pundits for their spots. Two things can be true at once. All it means is that across the board, the best people are almost certainly not being chosen.

I don't doubt that given his posts he is more sexist than he thinks, but i stand by my assertion that the sentiment that there are too many female pundits on the men's game, is true and I don't find it remotely credible that they are the most qualified, articulate and 'authoritative' voices that were chosen from the possible candidates.

@Solius ive no idea why youve bolded my post or what your comment means, it seems a bit cryptic, so Im just going to leave it as it is.

A summary of Barton's expertise, as he's been so cruelly robbed of the opportunity to share it.

On preparing for your professional debut:

Barton would have made his debut for the City first team in November 2002 against Middlesbrough, had he not lost his shirt after leaving it on the substitutes bench at half-time.

On respecting match officials:

An FA Cup match against Tottenham saw Barton receive the first red card of his career in unusual circumstances: at half-time, with his club 3–0 down, he argued with the referee and was sent off although the match was not in progress.

On team spirit and togetherness:

Barton displayed his outspokenness once again on 22 April 2007 when he publicly criticised City's performances during the 2006–07 season, and described some of the players the club had signed as "substandard".

Barton was fined £100,000 and suspended by City until the end of the 2006–07 season on 1 May 2007, following an incident during training when he assaulted his teammate Ousmane Dabo. Dabo said that he had been hit several times, was left unconscious and had to go to hospital after suffering injuries to his head, including a suspected detached retina.

In September 2016, Barton was suspended by Rangers for three weeks following a training ground argument with Andy Halliday. On 10 November 2016, Barton had his contract at Rangers terminated with immediate effect.

On the integration of young talent:

the club considered sacking Barton in December 2004 after an incident at their Christmas party. He stubbed out a lit cigar in youth player Jamie Tandy's eye

On interacting with young supporters:

In the summer of 2005, Barton was sent home from a pre-season tournament in Thailand after assaulting a 15-year-old Everton supporter. Barton had to be restrained from attacking the boy further by teammate Richard Dunne.

On general professionalism:

Barton left the City of Manchester Stadium in anger on 17 April, after not being named in the team to play Southampton.

on 30 September 2006, television cameras captured Barton exposing his backside to Everton fans, following City's injury-time equaliser in a match at Goodison Park.

In October 2016, Barton was charged with breaking rules relating to gambling on football matches. He was accused by the Scottish Football Association of placing 44 bets on matches between 1 July and 15 September 2016. In November 2016, he received a one match ban from the Scottish Football Association for breaking the rules on gambling on football matches. In December 2016, he was charged with misconduct, with the Football Association claiming he had placed 1,260 bets over the past 10 years.

On 26 April 2017, Barton received an 18-month ban from football after admitting a Football Association charge in relation to betting.

On making well-informed transfer moves:

Barton joined Newcastle on 14 June 2007 for a fee of £5.8 million … He said that his desire to win trophies helped him to make the decision … Barton stayed on with Newcastle United after they were relegated to the Championship.

Barton later said he was on the verge of joining Arsenal … instead he joined Queens Park Rangers … Ahead of the 2012–13 Premier League season, Barton was not given a squad number by QPR … Barton told ESPN that he would not return to Queens Park Rangers after the loan spell, and he also said that he only joined the club for money because his partner was expecting a child … Barton returned to QPR for the 2013–14 Championship season, despite posting a series of tweets on 9 April 2013 affirming he would not play for the club again.

On keeping a cool head:

Barton sparked a ten-man brawl in a friendly match against Doncaster Rovers on 25 July 2004 after "hacking" at an opposition player.

On 10 November, in a 2–1 defeat to Blackburn, Barton again acted violently, punching Morten Gamst Pedersen in the chest.

Barton received the ninth red card of his career in the 32nd minute of a match against Hull City after swinging at Tom Huddlestone's groin following a foul by Darnell Furlong.

He was later given a straight red card after head-butting Norwich midfielder Bradley Johnson.

On 13 May, on the final day of the season, with QPR requiring at least a draw in their match away at Manchester City or for Bolton Wanderers to not win in order to guarantee Premier League safety, Barton was sent off in the 55th minute for violent misconduct after elbowing Carlos Tevez in the face. Immediately after being shown a red card, he kicked Sergio Agüero in the back of the knee and attempted to head-butt Vincent Kompany. Barton had to be dragged from the pitch by former teammate Micah Richards as he rowed with Manchester City players and staff and attempted to square-off with striker Mario Balotelli.

following a 4–2 away defeat to Barnsley, South Yorkshire Police launched an investigation after Barton allegedly assaulted opposition manager Daniel Stendel in the tunnel. In July 2019, Barton was charged with causing actual bodily harm and bailed until 9 October 2019.

On the importance of self-awareness:

Barton was involved in a physical confrontation with Wolves player Karl Henry. Henry and Barton had a previous physical confrontation in August 2010 when Barton was still at Newcastle. Barton accused Henry of "trying to hurt people".

On being a role model:

The suspended six-match ban was nearly brought into action when Barton appeared to flick Aston Villa striker Gabriel Agbonlahor in the club's next match, but the FA decided not to punish Barton. However, further allegations that Barton had made a racist remark to Agbonlahor were cause enough for the FA to reconsider this decision.

Barton courted controversy once again during Newcastle's 3–1 win over Liverpool on 11 December 2010, when he appeared to direct homophobic remarks and a lewd gesture at Fernando Torres.

Barton was given a two-match suspended ban for describing Thiago Silva of Paris Saint-Germain as looking like an "overweight ladyboy" on Twitter.

Barton was criticised by several anti-Semitism campaigners when he compared his team’s poor performance in a 3-1 defeat to Newport County to a holocaust. In a post-match interview, Barton had said, "Someone gets in for a game, does well but then has a Holocaust, a nightmare, an absolute disaster".

Barton appeared on the BBC's Question Time discussion programme where, referring to the UK Independence Party (UKIP), he said "If I'm somewhere and there was four really ugly girls, I'm thinking she's not the worst – that's all UKIP are".

On maintaining a good relationship with the public:

In May 2005, Barton broke a 35-year-old pedestrian's leg while driving his car through Liverpool city centre at 2 am.

Barton was arrested on suspicion of assault and criminal damage after an alleged argument with a taxi driver in Liverpool while going to his hotel after a match on 13 March 2007.

On 27 December 2007, Barton was arrested on suspicion of assault in the Church Street area of Liverpool city centre following an incident which took place at 5:30 am. He was remanded in custody on 28 December since the offence was committed whilst he was on bail for two prior offences; the presiding magistrate said: "I also have to consider the safety of the public – you lashed out indiscriminately". CCTV showed Barton punching a man twenty times, causing him to lose consciousness, and attacking a teenager, breaking some of his teeth.

On management:

Barton's Rovers side suffered a 3–1 home defeat to Ben Garner's managed Swindon Town side.[197] This came after Barton had repeatedly criticised his predecessor, calling him "negligent" before repeating to have a number of digs at his opposing manager in the pre-match press conference, saying that he was willing to "spare 15-20 minutes for him after the game" to discuss the finer points of management … Barton was sacked by the club on 26 October 2023.

On why women should be kept away from male footballers:

In July 2021, Barton was charged with the assault by beating of a woman at an address in Kew, London in June 2021. In March 2022, a court heard that Barton had 'kicked wife in head' and 'grabbed her by throat' in a drunken row.

Let’s not forget he went to Rangers saying the SPL would be too easy for him. He came back after being dominated by Scott Brown in a 5-1 defeat to Celtic and never played for Rangers again. He lasted 5 games and was kicked all over the park in every game

Why are people even listening to him? I’ve been more interested in the reaction to his words than what he actually said himself. It’d be a problem if someone actually notable in football said it, but Barton is just a thug who got lucky in drawing the longest straw. Surely he should get the same treatment as if Big Steve commented it on Instagram?

Wasn't he in jail for three months amongst all this? Just skimread that, it doesn't seem to mention it.

I couldn't care less about pundits gender, only if they've got something interesting to contribute.

I genuinely think any bloke off the street could do a similar or better job than the likes of Shearer. Neville's commentary is also worse than any of the women who do it.

Unfortunately pundits are picked as a tick box exercise, not because they have something interesting to say.

Wasn't he in jail for three months amongst all this? Just skimread that, it doesn't seem to mention it.

Mentioned earlier in the thread.

Guy is an utter scumbag and if he wasn't also a complete moron, he'd have little trouble working out why no one wants his opinion in anything.

I've no interest in anything Joey Barton says, he's the sort of person who should be marginalised in general, the less influence he has the better.

Good football pundits should be encouraged, bad ones shouldn't be hired. There's plenty of informed or entertaining football opinions on YouTube from people that haven't played at a high level. Barton is just worked up because he can't get a TV job.

I think Barton is a thug. And he does contradict himself a lot.

For me it's ok to prefer men to do some things and women to do others. By today's standards it's probably been seen as sexist. For example I'd rather go watch a match with my male friends and I'd rather go karaoke with my girl friends. That's just because of their interests and I know how they'll enjoy it.

Hosting: I have zero preference who hosts a football show. Nowadays, I think Laura Woods is as good as anyone.

Punditry: This is a tough one. I think the standards have genuinely gone down. Jenas, Dublin, Redknapp etc, rubbish. But in general I think men are more suited to the role. They've played the game, they're probably more passionate and critical which makes for better TV. Female pundits have a huge disadvantage that if they are over-critical, they may get slated in social media. Alex Scott is a decent listen but Karen Scott and a few others are not a high standard I feel.

Commentary: I just feel a man's voice is more suited. Again a part of me feels it's good that women have been given an opportunity and they should be but personally in terms of passion and excitement of a football match, I'd rather listen to a male.

The cretin needs locking up.

"These two young men already kicking that ball better at 16 months and 5 years. If they have a fantastic career in the game. Like their dad did. When they stop playing and are middle aged, there will be no jobs for them in the football industry because they are white, middle aged and male. In the Men’s game. Because the aren’t the right ethnicity. They don’t tick those tokenistic boxes. Because they are British men. How can that be right in the English Premier League? We have to take this fight up for future generations. This is not about us. The British, White, Middle Aged men is under attack. Strap your dicks on Monday people. We have to get to work before the *****, the Feminist’s, the Racists and the Woke get there way. They’re intent on destroying everything because they are weak and talentless. They want to pull everyone and everything down. Take my boys future away? And thousands of young lads across this great land. Not on my watch. You’re going to have to kill me you cnuts."

Always felt he has some kind of victim complex, probably as a result of emotional issues growing up as a kid (well-documented). He seemed to be more aware of himself a couple of years back so it's a shame he's turned into a right knob again.

Edit - and grifting.

Never respect hard men that haven't even done one entire year behind bars.

Actually kinda impressive how despite millions and decades to change he just always stayed that tool chatting shxt in front of the club.

I love that he’s already been caught lying too. He really is absolute pond life.

So all this bollocks is to advertise his podcast? Yuk.

Obvious from the start. He did that interview where he spoke "honestly" trying to get himself back into the limelight, fecked it right up with the comments about his brother showing who he really is, now a couple of days later all this.

It pathetically transparent and that some can't see it is just sad. But then again he's a brave lad is that Joey, always fighting the good fight!

Can only think of a few non white pundits, what's he taking about?

Yeah I remember reading interviews with him where it sounded like he'd done a lot of therapy and gained a lot of insight and perspective but these latest outpourings are fkn wild. Really don't think he's of sound mind at the moment.

Surely his more nuanced point is why only men who have played premier league football or women who have played WSL can provide “expert analysis” on a men’s premier league match? I don’t recall ever seeing a co-commentator or studio pundit who had only ever played at championship level or league 1 level.

If it’s considered that only people who have played premier league football are able to provide that expert analysis, then that’s who should be providing it - so men only. If that’s not a prerequisite, then the job should be open to any former player and go those who provide the best analysis/co-comms, whether or not they’ve played premier league football and regardless of sex.

I personally don’t care which one of the above is preferred but the current system strikes me as just being politically correct, rather than ensuring we get the best analysis/coverage.

It's all a grift. There's a lot of money to be made in being against the "woke mob". He doesn't give a shit about this subject really, he just can't get a job in football or the media so is starting a podcast.
