Jesse Lingard will have an excellent season | Discuss in his player performance thread

No. He played well enough.

And your issue?

My issue is he carried on his run of no goal or assist in the Pl since Boxing day, and in fact in the last 12 months of football he's not scored or got an assist in the league for 11 of them.

I thought he was his usual invisible self providing no cutting edge whatsoever and the only noteworthy thing he did was an embarrassing airshot when a better player could have stuck it away and made it 2-0.

I think he's aware of how awful he's been and his confidence looks shot to pieces.

I find it baffling anyone could watch Lingard on Monday and think he played well.

He's nearly 27 and still has more assists for the old u21s then he does for the first team. fecking useless run around a bit merchant.

I remember the Cafe praising him in the 2017-18 season. What changed ?

Inevitable now that Lukaku has gone eyes will turn to Lingard, as the least talented footballer on the pitch for us most matches.

At least Pereira and Mata can take set pieces if nothing else.

I wasn't on here then unfortunately, because i have never praised Lingard in my life. Every game i see him play for us, is a game too many. The best I can hope for, is for him to not get in the way and quickly make a 5 yard pass as soon as he receives it. As shown countless times now, he hasn't got the talent to be anywhere near the box for us.

I'm still amazed at the excuses that get pulled out for this guy.

"Oh he's a young lad" - He is older than Paul Pogba, and born the same year as the likes of Salah and Neymar.
I've just realised, Lingard was our oldest outfield player in the first two starting eleven.

I, and many other I’m sure, would have no problem with him being a squad player, filling gaps in times of need. The problem is he is a first teamer in a critical position and he’s not fecking good enough for it. That’s why he’s compared to David Silva and others.....they are the other respective first teamers at our rivals

Yes, I get it. I'm sure these same people complained about Ji Sung Park and demanded a signing like Sanchez.

United has never been a team that bought a top lever player for every position.

Not when it comes to utility players. But how many utterly shite forward players has the club been willing to carry in the starting eleven over the last 30 years? The sorts of players who wouldn't get into the starting elevens of any other top ten side of the time?

For ability and for goal/assist output, Lingard is a million miles away from the likes of Park and Nani.

His issue is that he is not delivering the goals and assists. His movement is good, but his decision making in the final third is average. He is fairly quick, but he does not have amazing pace. He is just a very average player, but someone who carries out the manager's instructions and will therefore be at United until he retires.

Ofcourse his confidence is shot. Imagine practising goal celebrations for months on end and never getting a goal.
It just makes the realisation you're shit very stark.

He is a squad player and nothing else. He should never start a game only come on as a sub unless we have an injury crisis.

He was very productive for about 3 months that year, scoring regularly and directly involved in goals, and many (myself included) were celebrating the fact that he's finally come good. But we've never seen anything close to that form replicated since.

I maintain that he still has something to offer us but shouldn't be considered a regular or every game. He should only be used when there's a tactical necessity.

I agree with this. The main issue is his end product. Especially the role he’s currently playing, the end product is crucial and he hasn’t deliver for very long time.

How's that even comparable?
Park was a squad rotation player while Lingard is A FIRST TEAM PLAYER.

I don't agree with that comparison. Park's knees gave out toward the end of his time here and he went out on a low note but he was a heck of a lot better footballer and a million times better professional than Jesse Lingard. Not only that, Lingard has pretty much become our first choice starting 11, while Park rarely had that role. I think it's telling how much our standards have dropped.

Got it. His energy can be useful after 60 min when the oposition has tired legs.

As long as the club has it's current board you can expect to see plenty of players you don't like here.

Yeah that's true. SAF papered over the cracks but the player decline was happening long before he retired and here we are. It's nothing against him personally, i just wish he wasn't playing so much for us.

He's been rubbish for a good while now but I wouldn't be surprised if we start playing well and he starts scoring again.
If that happens then someone else will get the stick he currently is getting.

If he doesn't start getting goals and assists then what is the point of him?

For a regular team player he is not doing enough. He is not creating nor is he scoring. Didn't he miss an open chance against Wolves too?

Should be a supersub (with Mata) and play Europa/Carabao games. He is blocking Angel.

:lol::lol::lol:
One of those asissted the assister stats?

In all honesty I prefer how they distribute assists in hockey over how it's done in football. Often the guy who's third last on the ball makes just as an important contribution to a goal as both the one scoring it and the one delivering the final pass - and sometimes when their involvement is what opens up a defense or catches them off guard more so even. In fact there are many things American sports in general does better than European football associations in terms of both promoting teamplay and also rewarding contributions across all positions. Here the focus is mostly on the goal scorers - and I've often found myself wishing that football had an award system more similar to that of hockey as I feel the former is more primitive and unsophisticated - more sensationalist - than the latter.

As for Lingard I feel he's kind of immature and lacking in both flair and creativity at times - too often invisible and nervous on the ball plus he did that whole Beans Beans Beans thing which would have made me cringe even as a child - but at the same time I really love his spirit and I think he's one of those guys who brings a lot of positivity to his teammates. Also I'm reserving my judgement on him as a player until the end of this season - much like i do with everyone currently involved due to this club as a whole having underperformed for years now.

I’ve defended him in the past, but he clearly needs to do more in the critical moments, where it matters close to the goal. Lack of end product is going to kill us this season.

Football is different now pal. You need quality everywhere on the pitch.....just look at the dynamism of Liverpool’s fullbacks, or the worth placed in having a ball playing centre back. Even more important....Lingard is playing at 10, the one free role that allows for creativity, yet he cannot contribute with goals or assists

I don’t see what we’d lose by dropping Lingard and giving Gomes, Chong or Greenwood a chance. Lingard contributes f*ck all.

Really minor contributions and nothing any other player wouldn’t do just by virtue of being on the field.

“Off the ball movement” is basically a meme when it comes to Lingard by now. All this stuff is fine, but honestly you could analyse any crap player and cherry pick moments where they contributed by running around and distracting defenders. He’s rubbish but the opposition aren’t going to ignore him as if he’s not even on the pitch.

"Great moment" - very rarely is his movement great, he runs away from the ball and hides from play. Gets dressed up as great movement by his fanboys but honestly he's just a headless chicken and a coward on the pitch.

"Pre-assists" - this made me laugh, just an utterly irrelevant and pedantic point to make. What next, pre-pre assists? Comical.

We play palace this week, he honestly belongs in a team like that. Awful player.
Absolutely nobody says that, other than as an unimaginative shared joke that stopped being funny before it even started.

It's the part of FIFA that players don't control, and therefore it's criminally underrated in the real world.

The off the ball bullshit that gets spouted is the same as Rooney's silent domination. Utter drivel.

If you're not scoring boat loads of goals week in week out the CAF think that you're shi*e - The CAF doesn't understand the aspects of football that aren't always apparent.

Carrick is a fine example, players loved playing alongside him yet fans always criticised him "he always passes sideways" -

Yeah comparing Carrick's contribution to somebody like Lingard you my friend certainly understand the nuanced aspects of football for sure.
