He's almost useful late on in a game or when we're playing on the counter as a result of his pace.

Next to useless in a tight game that we're dominating as he's so technically poor.

Because they are obsessed with slagging our own players rather than supporting the team.

I support the team. However, you have to look at things detached from emotion. I think Lingard gets a lot of defense from our supports simply because he is from the academy and really does give his all when he plays. I can appreciate that and it is something I love about him. However, if we are actually trying to build a squad that can get back to the top of European football, we surely need to have much better players than him. Right now, we are struggling season after season to even get top 4, and I think a good portion of that is down to the qualities of our players. His critics are not "slagging off our own players", they are giving honest assessments of some of our squad which are simply not up to the required level.

I personally think he has been poor in his last few games, and if he doesn't shape up he may be out of the club. It is a position where we have a lot of alternatives.
Some of the vitriol aimed at him is unnecessary.

Darmien is a nothing player for me, but I wouldn't resort to calling him derogatory names.
I support the team, whoever plays, and call the performance as I see it, and not to fit my likes/dis-likes.

If he wasn't from the youth academy, fans wouldn't have as much patience with him. He's nothing special unfortunately. He might be happy to hang around as a bit part player, or go on to be a reasonable, if unspectacular signing for someone like Newcastle.

Exactly, another nothing performance that'll get defended because of his background. I'm not sure he has any strengths, at least no stand out ones. Yeah he's a bit quick, but that's about it. Fellaini has his aerial abilities at least. Lingard is such an average player. Occasionally plays well, more often you barely notice he's on the pitch.

these are exactly the games in which he has to make sth happen, to catch the eye, he failed to do it, hes good to the combination and capable of good runs in behind, its not his game to dribble past players, we know that, thats why he should be playing centrally to make him more effective but obviously we can use different players there with overall higher creativity.

I just dont hate the negativism about his header he had a lot to do certainly harder to score from there than Pogba last game and ppl go crazy to call him a shit player, he let himself down with his overall display much more than that header so give him a break..

He did play centrally , that's the problem, not that he missed the header, he should have been helping Young, he can't dribble, he can't pass, he can't cross and he can't shoot- valuable member of the squad.

I just can't believe he's (apparently) on £95k a week!

Most PL footballers (typically on no where near that) must be spitting feathers...

Anyone would think Blackburn were fecking shite the way you lot go on. They played very well. The difference makers, unsurprisingly, were the players on 250k a week. Not that I'm suggesting Lingard was or is particularly good, but I am suggesting he's a role player who can be useful in some situations (e.g. literally the last game we played against At Etienne) and is good enough to be our, what, 5th choice winger? Maybe 6th choice if you include Rooney?

Not a great game at all. He really could have done better in certain situations (eg the ball by Herrera which he lets run across to go out wide instead of a nice touch to take him into a shooting position, the header, etc)

His stuff off the ball is much better than on the ball (eg his run to create space for the Rashford equaliser, his actual run which lead to the Herrera pass).

TBH hes not a world beater but hes still a useful squad player for games like this. Id also start him midweek given our huge advantage and chance to rest players before the final next week.

Had a poor game. Not making excuses for him but it's hard to come into the team when he hasn't played in a while and perform at his best at a tough away game. But games like this are his best chance at getting back into the team and he missed his chance today.

He's not improving much since last season. With the amount of games available to United this season, it is his chance to grab and showcase what he can do, or even show improvement. But none of thise happened. He's just a player that move around a lot, with occasional end products.

I don't see his future at United. It's really sad, as he comes from academy, a nice lad, and british as well.

Thought he was far too casual today. He misses too many chances.

When he is in the zone he is great but it's not happening enough, similar to Januzaj, I don't think they have that dedication needed to reach the top.

He's nothing like Januzaj. :wenger:

I think using him late in games would be a good use of his skills. But right now he reminds me of Cleverly... but on the wing

Not a great game from him today but he's done enough during his time in the first team to show he's a good option as a squad player.

Fantastic movement for the goal, that ball is near impossible if he doesn't drag the defender away.

Look at Martial. That's the problem many of us debating on different threads: his desire, effort in movement off ball.

Lingard is pretty shite all around today but in key moment for the goal he did contribute by his movement. Very difficult player to utilize given he's not consistent as receiver of passes, nor himself a player who can force thing by his ability on ball. Can't describe this mixed feeling but hate giving him game where we should be comfortable. He's not starter for tough game, but a decent sub to influence the flow of the game.

Said a million times as much as I want him to succeed he simply is not good enough for us to be a top team again. We need better, I don't mind having this type of player (filler) as a stopper but as a creative player he kills us with his lack of quality. Now before anyone jumps at me and points out his goals. I'm talking about his consistency of quality. He misses much more than he scores and falls to pieces when in front of goal.

This.

I quite like Lingard but can't really disagree with much of the article. I thought he was going to become a solid squad player but after a reasonably promising start to the season he seems to have dropped a level (despite the odd good moment or cameo). He really needs to respond and kick on during the remainder of the season or face being moved on or becoming a peripheral figure like Basti.

It's odd but I actually think he might be one of the few players that was more suited to LVG's playing style.

He's just not a right winger. The lad struggles to beat a fullback and doesn't have another asset to compensate for that. In that position he's not good enough to even be a squad player.

A squad player shouldn't just be a filler. A guy you bring in just to give others a rest. He should bring you something different when the original plan isn't working.

For me he's not a winger. He can't beat a man. He's another #10 played wide aka Mata, Mkhi etc.

Only problem is they are miles ahead of him. Lingard actually plays like a poor mans Mkhitaryan.

Assuming Rooney leaves, as competition for part of the 3 behind the striker he'll be behind Mkhi, Mata, Martial, Rashford, and probably Griezmann. He should move on and make his mark somewhere else.

You're right he isn't (or shouldn't be) a winger at all. It puts him in positions he doesn't have the skillset to deal with. When I watched him in the reserves he played on the left or centrally more often as I recall and that made better use of his link up and movement. He has been used as a Mata-esque RW in the first team but it just doesn't seem to be working for him at the moment and there is too much quality in the other AM roles for him to be considered there. It's not looking good for him at the moment.

Yeah that's how I remember him.

But like you say no other slot seems an option. Especially if we carry on with 4-2-3-1.

Lingard has a good game.
Caf: Yeah, good squad option, good off the bench.

Lingard has a bad game.
Caf: Shite, sell him.

No as a defensive players we have had more than our share of fillers O'shea, Phil Nev and even at the end Brown (because of injuries) were all great fillers.

Yeah we've had them. I don't think we should have though. They were eventually replaced and we improved.

You'd think we would have learned after giving young £110k a week to for doing feck all.
I still think he is a decent option off the bench but to give him £95k at this stage of his career is just stupid

How are we on the homegrown front if Rooney and Carrick leave? Even the rumours about Shaw and Smalling could mean Lingard has to stay

He's not got great technical ability and he struggles to beat his man. To me, he doesn't appear that quick either. However, his movement is very good usually and his link up play is decent. A good player against tired legs in the last twenty minutes. As a starter he's not really worth it.

Not all those will leave (I think Young and possibly Carrick will be the only 2 homegrown players to leave personally), but if they did we'd still have Jones, Pogba and Rashford in the first team. With the likes of Fosu Mensah and Tuanzebe on the fringes. Then the players currently loaned out, although I think only Pereira is likely to stay out of them and I'm not sure if he counts as homegrown or not?

No they weren't between them they were integral to our success!
