A player who spends most his time on the bench and chips in against the smaller teams where the better players are rested?

Gets starts when "better" players are not in form or are out injured/suspended/recovering. Keeps the "better" players on their heels, can improve (like any player) and therefore claim a starting spot at any time during the season.

Exactly, a back up, some common ground finally. Let's leave it there, we seem to rate his abilities differently, I simply want a better standard of player, like o said previously Nani not too long ago was the lingard of the team and he is head and shoulders above him.
When a first teamer has to step down due to any of the reasons you mentioned above (form, injury etc...) I don't want there to be too much of a drop in ability with the replacement which I feel is the case with lingard.
He has a good chance of starting tomorrow, regardless of our differences lets both hope he has a good game

top1 is not wrong and neither are you. The problem with your logic however, is that, 'the grass is always greener' and you forget players like that Lingard, Valencia, Fellani and Young (who I massively dislike but can appreciate his contribution) have delivered to a good standard.

The times when we've had 'better' players or players with more ability, they either themselves have failed or the managers have failed to get the best out of them. Case in point, Herrera (under LVG), Di Maria, Falcao, Schneiderlin, Schweinsteiger, Depay, Darmian etc etc.

You can have 'higher' standards but you've got to appreciate the ones that are doing the job already. It seems your disdain and criticism of Lingard should be channelled to why Mourinho isn't getting the best out of Martial, Mata, Rashford etc or rather why those players that are technically so much or are even twice the player Lingard is, can't offer the same kind of intelligent movement and off the ball running that our style of play and static attack needs.

I was fine with him starting vs Sunderland. I'd be fine with him starting vs Boro. But I'd also like for it to be accepted when he has a poor game. He's had good games this season but when he has a poor one it'd be nice for that to be agreed upon rather than people insisting that he was 'decent' and bring out stats to prove that our eyes must have lied for 90 minutes.

My issue isn't that he starts it's that there's this ridiculously low standard that some people hold him to when he does.

I think disdain is quite a strong word ha
I see your point, but my main disagreement here was people's exaggeration in lingards ability, I read someone say he is "class" and he isn't he's alright his main strength is his work ethic which for me is why we look out of ideas when he and rashford were starting on the wings.

I get that we need to pick someone to play there and depay young are done at the club, just hoping he won't be a regular feature going forward or even better still improves his game, that would be fantastic

Jose has a certain way of playing and some players won't flourish under it but I'd rather the club as a whole performed better (which undoubtedly it is currently doing) than last year where the team was shocking apart from the gk and 2 young strikers.

If you get strung up on semantics then you're in for a long one. Whether you want to admit it or not he's a quality player who deserves to be getting time here. We look better for his off the ball movement which is his biggest strength. Of course we can improve on him, eventually we can improve on him with the players we already have in the squad. But as of right now he is deservedly getting game time over the likes of Martial because he is offering more to our play.

Got to say - if one player has the ability to keep a tight group mentality it would be Lingard and this might be a very underrated thing that Lingard brings.

Absolutely! Cue his critics’ comments: ”So we pay him XX k/w for running a lot and joking around."

Yeh but they just see footballers as objects. I for one would put my money down for Pogba having a a harder time settling in if we didn't have lingard. Most of the time that's why you always have home grown talent & Lingard is one of the best home grown talents we have.

Agreed.

His social media is cringeworthy but i do understand your point in general, however I would prefer we have home grown players with quality, not Lingard who is average

…is your opinion. I’m happy with his performances, yes there’s things he can do better, but luckily for us there’s still time for him to develop further.

Indeed he is. And again, luckily for us, 24-year old players can still improve :)

They can but so can players at 28. Doesn't mean to say you treat them the same as a 18/19 year old in terms of expectations of improvement. At some point we have to accept that whilst players may improve in their own individual way, it's very rare for a player to suddenly improve dramatically in their mid 20s.

The player you are at 27 is generally the player you were at 24. You'll probably improve but it's very rare for someone who isn't at least very good in their early mid 20s to be anything more in their later mid 20s. There are exceptions but top players at aged 27 are generally quite good long before that.

To me Lingard is more than suitable for us as a squaddie, so even if he didn’t improve dramatically, I’d be happy to keep him. To me he needs to produce a bit more with the ball, but that hopefully comes with experience. We’ll see...

He isn't a squaddie if he is keeping much better players out of the team 50%+ of the time.

Yawn. Squad players don't only sit on the bench and play cup games. Their job is to be ready whenever the "better" players are injured/suspended/not in form. It's up to Martial, Mata, Mkhi (and Rooney to keep him out.

Why was Lingard in for Martial after Martial had 2 goals and 2 assists in his last 3 games? That is "not in form".

He's a fairly versatile player, the attacking version of John O'Shea. So you can understand why Mourinho likes him, he can slot into a few positions and do a job.

Well, there's this thing called rotation. Anyway, on the bench today, let's hope Martial has a good game.

Mind set of video games.

Whether you want to admit t or not he is not a quality player, he is an average player who uses his speed and work rate.
And as of right now martial and mhiki are names on the team sheet ahead of him and rightly so.
I'm moving on from lingard as well he lad hasn't even played

No, he is a quality player. He's playing for United, he's in the top 0.001% of players on the planet. So yes, he is a quality player.

There's a reason Fergie rated him, as did the 3 managers that followed him.

His movement off the ball is superb, his technique is solid, he's very fast and works incredibly hard. He's a quality player. Just because on their best days Martial and Mkhitaryan are better than Lingard on his best days doesn't mean he doesn't deserve a spot and minutes on this team.

Slight exaggerations, we're going round the houses here.

Can't think of many 4th choice wide players I'd rather have.

He is a good player. Much in the same way that someone like O'Shea was a good player. He isn't good enough to start but he has his strengths and is still improving. More than happy to have someone like him in the squad.

Those stats that keep coming out.
Here's a couple more

Lingard starts in the PL - United P8 W3 D3 L2
Lingard doesn't start - United P11 W7 D3 L1

Who is the only United attacking player not to score in the PL - Lingard

Just a bit of perspective

Like Fergie rated TC23???
