I don't think his chance was a sitter at all. I'd argue the best decision would've been a pass. It was a tricky angle.

He did set up Ibra's 1-0 and also Rooney's strike in the bar. The latter was not a brilliant technical moment, but he moved all across the pitch to find himself in a good position on the left. In addition, he could've (should've?) gotten a penalty at the start.

Great game by him. A few misunderstandings with Valencia though, after the 1-0.

His work rate in this game was immense and his movement is completely selfless. There were at least 3 occasions in the first half where he drifted all the way over to the left in possession and got himself back into position on the opposite side of the pitch when we lost the ball seemingly in an instant.

People always complain about his finishing as a weakness and it is, but that's why most of his supporters view him as a squad player rather than a nailed on starter. If he added consistent finishing to his game Martial and Rashford would be permanently nailed to the bench.

If he scored, he would have been the motm. His movement was brilliant.

So another bright game from Jesse and yet next week people will still be saying how shite or average he is and he should be nowhere near United. I think the kid is quality.

Should naturally replace Mkhitaryan when he's injured/rested. He's very similar in the way he runs off the ball and dribbles with it.
Problem is Lingard himself had those terrible games too where he ruined our attack build up. Home game vs West Ham is the closest. Movement though, he consistent popped up at right area. Perfect squad player if being managed well and played when being in top form.

For someone so limited, he makes us look so good in the final third. That ball to Zlatan, you'd find hard to execute on Play Station.

Should start alongside Micky and Zlatan in the "big games". Those are our 3 best current(!) attacking players

Agreed. Great thing we can pop in Mata there just to switch things up, gives us a consistent dead ball passer late in the game too. Rashford and Martial got plenty of work to do to make it back to the starting XI.

I voted for him anyway. He deserves it, especially after all the flak we give him.

We look a different team with proper use of the right flank. Lingard might overtake Mata in the pecking order.

God i hate that statement....so if he went for a safe shoot which gk would save with no problem you would be happier because he had a shoot on target?
No just if he actually hit the ball in the general direction of the goal that would have been an improvement. He's another Welbeck, where if he has time to think he inevitably misses the target.

Hes doing well. not a nailed on starter for me, but he is one of a few (mata, martial, rooney) who can be rotated in and out. which is a very good thing.

I do not really get what some of the posters mean when they say that Lingard is limited? Do they mean poor finishing, when he skies the ball occasionally? For every skied shot, I can find a terrific assist or a perfectly netted ball. Lingard works hard, presses well, off the ball movement is decent too. He is no-Ronaldinho when it comes to dribbling, but there are not many around who are.

Given ten times more to this club than the likes of Depay, Januzaj and Pereira but never gets the credit he deserves from our own fans.

He's class and a great back up to have for Mikki, Martial and Mata.

He's an excellent squad player.

Should not start every week, but does his job and pops up with goals and assists quite regularly.

I think he'll naturally become a great squad option to have when injuries or rotation calls on him to come in - plus he loves the club and isn't going to complain about lack of minutes or not starting games.

When you look at the other top 6 teams, and their squad options you can see that in comparison Lingard is a great option to have in the team.

People underestimate the impact squad members who perhaps aren't ever going to be close to world class but put in a shift and contribute positively over the course of the season with the right attitude.

hes our best academy player beside pogba.. his passion is immense.. he acts childish but is intelligent on the pitch. His finish needs eork but he has amazing technique.. dribbling and passing.. will continue to grow.

He is one of the smartest players on the pitch - his runs are so brilliant.

Yeah every team needs the John O'Shea's of this world!

I really see a place for Lingard in the squad, I can't help but like the guy.

I think he should target becoming another Park for us: Brilliant tactically, world-class work rate, combining well with more talented attackers, and the knack for providing the goals in key games/moments. He has all the ingredients to do it (he already has the last element!).

We're much better as an attacking force with him in the team than we are without him, that's for damn sure. His movement is essential to create space for everyone else. Although we won't miss him when Mikhi plays tbf. Have they started a game together?
The Manchester derby loss, they both got subbed off at half time :nervous:

Is he limited?

Don't get me wrong, I really like Jesse and he has more than earned his spot on the squad. I do think that he's one of the less naturally talented players in our squad, but with his work rate, smart positioning and crucial goals/assists, I'm not complaining.

Finally, his off the ball movement came togehter and he showed prodcutivity. That was always my biggest criticism, that he just does not enough with the ball and hence should not start games. If he can up his game with more output, he could become more than just a squad player. Nevertheless, he had good games in between in the past as well, let's see if he can show this kind of football on a regular basis

Was excellent during the first half on Saturday. He wasn't quite as good in the second before coming off.

Lingard > lamela

Nothing to do with Jesse now so in advance sorry for OT but why is off the ball movement separated from natural talent, are skills and dribbling ability only thing that counts as a natural talent?

I'd like to point to this. Whenever they're close to each other they seem to know what the other one is going to do before he does it, making it easy for both of them to make quick passes and get out of a congested midfield easily. It's pretty nice to see this guys who ran over everyone at younger levels play with this ease together at Senior level.

Now just imagine if it was both of them and Ravel... What could have been.

oh you're back. I thought you'd cleared off when Fletcher and Welbeck left

Has proven he deserves a place in our squad. Looked bright (a rarity) under LVG last year, and has adapted to Jose's tactics and demands well. He was all over the pitch in the first half, a very important player to our success - his movement confused the defense and dragged players out of position. He also ran in behind Zlatan and even stayed highest up the pitch at times to allow Ibra to drop back. If he maintains this form he will be a valuable squad player for us.

He's another player I like & he has done & keeps doing just enough to be part of the squad, I think United fans have been very unfair to him, he's never going to be a world beater, but he's someone that can come in and do a very good job when our established players are injured or having a poor run of form, he's very intelligent & has good movement, a good player.

Agreed, you can see when Lingard starts a run, Pogba puts it into the space which leads to Lingard getting a really good pass to compliment his run. An example being the one that lead to Rooney hitting the bar.
