Don't agree. His pace, positional sense and ability to read the game were part of what made him an excellent defender in a high line. Coming back for last-ditch recoveries has been part of that as well. As has already been said: he's simply not in a good shape atm.
He's the exact opposite of Smalling. Slow, good on the ball, and constantly pushing up far too much and then barely bothering to come back.
@GhastlyHun and @strongwalker have also got it right about Löw being behind him pushing up so far as a playmaker, imo.
