Jean-Philippe Mateta

We'd probably get the Mateta that played his first four seasons in the PL rather than the last two.

Probably, but at least with Mateta his best football has been in a similar system and if you splurge on Amorim players and he fails, Glasner could be a decent option to take over?

Turns 28 in the summer and whilst we need a recognised striker, doesn’t seem like the age profile Ineos are interested in.

I was only joking when I said donkeys like Mateta and Wood are doing fine and at the very least Hojlund is that level!

A solid option to help elevate us from bottom half team to midtable. I'd welcome any half decent striker tbh. Sick of the sight of Hojlund

Broader note on Palace, there will clubs circling for Guehi, Eze and probably Wharton too. I'd be surprised if they sold Mateta but I suppose Nketiah is there too who they may trust to eventually step up (Mateta took a while himself so 1 'off' year by Nketiah wouldn't deter their faith).

We're in our Liverpool Rickie Lambert era.

Two years on his contract and his former club have a big sell on clause so Palace will demand way more than we will be willing to pay.

I mean Liverpool also signed Sadio Mane, Virgil van Dijk and Georginio Wijnaldum from sides who were lower down in the league. (Although we wouldn't be doing that with Mateta, funnily enough)

I'm not saying Mateta would be out equivalent to any of those but this attitude of dismissing players out of hand because "oh, how embarrassing - we're signing players from Palace now" is ridiculous. The guy scored 16 goals in the Premier League last season and looks on pace to get around that many again; I really don't get why so many are convinced he's a clogger.

Key word is 'could'. Personally, I don't think we'll go near him unless he has a release clause, as he'll be far too expensive.

I'd rather sign Wharton if we were going to sign a Palace player.

Im only kidding anyway mate. The doom and gloom around everything we do lends more to Lambert/Konchesky era rather than Mane/Robertson era.

Nothing like a striker about to enter his decline phase who's never scored 20 goals in his life to get you excited for United's future....

He better be cheap.

Maybe he's still concussed and would actually want to join us

You're not wrong there. I get the feeling that had we gone for Mane the season before Liverpool got him (we were quite strongly rumoured to be interested), he wouldn't have made nearly the same impact.

If we can get him for around 25m or less, I think its a decent signing for 3 years. I believe his contract is expiring next summer so CP may be looking to sell.

Takes the pressure off our young strikers. Hopefully, by then, Chido or someone else would be ready to take-over.

Well he sort of plays in the same system as ours. Had a long and really bad stint of bad form last year however. Could totally happen at United too + he’ll have no resale value as he’s 27, so if cheap then maybe.

I mean there literally isnt a premier league striker that wouldn't improve us right now so at least the bar is low for whoever comes in

Makes sense as a stop gap that is much cheaper than Osimhen/Gyokeres. He suits Amorim's football well. If Palace demand more than 50m then I'd just pay up and sign someone better.

What's his contract situation like? I wouldn't be against signing him if he is available for something like 20-25m.
He looks like a striker who would suit Amorims football very well and I was particularly impressed with his pressing when we played Palace last month and the pressing from the front line has been a real issue for us for a long time. He wont be the striker that brings us back to the top but as a stopgap/backup striker he would be a decent addition to the squad.

How many years to go until the Klopp era? Fingers crossed!
Not long. We're dragging it out though. We'll lose in Europa League final this year. 8th next year. Then we win it all over the next 4 years.

They’ve got an option of an additional year so in effect he has 2 years left. He won’t be anywhere near 25m. You can double that at least

I’m a bit wary of saying someone who’s 28 is too old, especially if they’re available on a cut price fee. But we just never seem to sign a Lewandowski or a Modric. These days as soon as anyone in a United shirt hits 30, his legs fall off.
